OIL-BURNER.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. COCH- RAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Delphos, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners; and l do hereby declare the following t0 be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in oil burners adapted for attachment to heating and cook stoves, the obj ect being to provide a burner that will be of few parts, simple in construction and adapted to be readily applied within the lire pot of any ordinary heatingor cook stove, and it consists in the details of construction as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a view in end elevation.
1 represents the base of the burner attachment, comprising a rectangular metal plate provided at its front and two ends with a continuous integral flange 2 sulliciently high to hold any oil that may overflow at the start, and also provided at its rear side with the integral back plate 3 which preferably terminates slightly 'below the top of the air pipes as shown in Fig. 1. Base plate 1 is also provided adjacent each end with an air opening t, preferably circular as shown, and eentrally with the saucer shaped dellector 6, the latter being cast integral with base plate 1.
5 are the combined air supply pipes and mixing chamber, comprising two end members 5a which rest at their open ends on member 1 over and around the openings 4 therein, and the central member 5b which is shorter than the end members 5a and terminates in the vertical plane of the deflector 6 and slightly above the top of the latter, so that the mixed air and vapor as it issues from the lower open or burner end of the mixing chamber, strikes the upper concave face of the dellector and is deflected circumferentially from the same. ported against accidental displacement by the circular flange 7 surrounding the openings 4l and forming in effect recessed seats for the lower ends of the members 5, and also by the oil pipe 8, which is secured to 'the back plate 3 and passes through the part 5 at the meeting point of the air passages in the two members 5a. The oil pipe 8 is secured to back plate 3 and communicates with the duct 9 Jformed in an enlargement 10 cast integral with back plate 3. The duct 9 is open at its lower end at the rear of the back plate as shown in Fig. 3, for the attachmentl of the oil supply pipe 11 which is provided with a valve 12 for cutting off and also for controlling the supply of oil to the pipe 8. Pipe 8 projects horizontally through the mixing chamber 5 from the rear, and is closed at its outer end and provided on its lower side with one or more holes or slots for the escape of the oil or vapor that may be generated in the pipe 8 or duct 9.
The base 1 is adapted to be entered and supported in the fire pot of any ordinary coal or wood burning stove, and is connected up to the oil supply pipe 11 which supplies the oil from a reservoir located adjacent the stove.
By opening valve 12 the oil enters duct 9 and flows into pipe 8 and drips into the saucer shaped deector 6. By igniting the oil within the deflector, the heat therefrom soon heats up the oil in pipe 8 so that the latter v'aporizes and ignites, as it issues from the open en d of mixing chamber 5b and by the time the oil in the saucenshaped deflector 6 has been consumed, the heat from the burning vapor and air is suliicient to continue the vaporization of the oil in pipe 8 and duct 9. As the open or burner end of the mixing chamber begins to heat up, a current of air is induced up through the openings 4 in body member 1, through members 5Et of the air supply pipe to the mixing chamber 5b. As the walls of the mixing chamber and the adjacent parts of member 5 become highl heated by the burning vapor and air, the latter in its passage to the mixingl chamber also becomes highly heated and in a condition to thoroughly commingle with the vapor generated in the pipe 8. The mixed air and vapor burning at the burner end of the mixing chamber is projected against `.the saucer shaped deliector and is deflected laterally thereby into a ring like Haine which is sufliciently intense for cooking or heating purposes.
The attachment being a unitary structure independent of the stove, can be removed and replaced in the fire pot of a stove with- -out the employment of skilled labor, and
when in place can rest on the grate or grate supports or if desired on brick or other supports resting on the grate.
It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrangement of parts .shown and described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, hence IA would have it understood that I do not wish to coniine myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but,-
Ilav'ing fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
l. An oil burner attachment for stoves consisting of a base member having air openings through the same adjacent its ends, a burner member having upwardly extending air ducts at its ends which terminate centrally in a downwardly projecting burner member open at its lower end, an oil pipe projecting into the burner member over the burner opening therein, and a saucer shaped deflector below and in the vertical plane of the -burncr opening, the said deflector being of greater diameter than the burner opening.
2. An oil burner attachment for stoves consisting of a base member having a continuous edge flange, and air openings adjacent its ends, a burner member having air ducts in communication with the openings in the base member and terminating in a downwardly projecting centrally located burner member, a saucer shaped deflector on the base member and under the lower end of the burner member, and anoil pipe discharging into the burner member in the vertical plane of the burner openino.
3. An oil burner attachment for stoves consisting of a flat base member having an integral back plate, a burner member having two air ducts at its ends which meet at the center and form a mixing chamber which projects downwardly and is open at its lower end, an oil pipe carried by the back plate and connnumcating with an oil duct in said plate, the oil pipe projecting into the mix- Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
