ATTOR N EY MELL BERT DUMAS, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
SCRUBBING-BRUSI-I.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 15, 1919.
Application filed February 11, 1918. Serial No. 216,662.
To all whom z'z may concern:
Be it known that I, MELL BERT DUMAS, 'a citizen of the United States, andresident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrubbing-Brushes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My linvention relates to new and useful improvements in knife attachments for scrubbing brushes, whereby coincident with the scrubbing operation, spots of grease or other matter not readily dislodged by the brush, may be scraped loose.
It is an object of my invention to provide a scraper member for attachment to a brush head, which upon grasping the brush head may be manipulated in a-most convenient manner for procuring different scraping operations and for procuring ready .scraping access to corners or crevices which it may be desired to clean.
A further object resides in the provision of a scraper attachment of this nature which is exceedingly simple in form and which may be most readily attached to a conventional brush head.
With these and other objects in view,`
which will be apparent as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and defined by the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment might be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a side elevational view of my improved scraper attachment applied to a conventional scrubbing brush, the connecting portion of the attachment and the adjacent portion of the brush head being shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the brush andV scraper.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the brush and scraper on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, 5 designates a conventional wooden brush head carrying the bristles 6.
My improved scraper attachment preferably comprises an attaching plate 8 and a securing screw 10. rIhe blade is connected with the plate at one corner portion of said blade, and in the attached position of the platev on the end of the brush head, projects outwardly therefrom in a plane including the longitudinal axis of the brush head, the lower edge of the blade merging into the bottom face of the plate. The upper edge of the blade which is thus disposed considerably above the plate in the normal scrubhing position of the brush, is straight and sharpened to provide the scraping edge 11. The outer portion of the blade is curved downwardly and inwardly from this scraping edge, the. -curved'edge 12 thus formed merging into the bottom of the blade and being sharpened to procure an eflicient scraping action. By this shape of the blade it is further noted that a scraping point 13 is formed at its outer end which may be conveniently engaged in corners or crevices, this scraping point being disposed in a most remote relation to the brush head to facilitate this convenience.
In the operation of the scraper, the at top scraping edge 11 may be used to scrape a comparatively wide expanse of surface, and to scrape a smaller expanse, or to apply a greater degree of scraping power, the curved surface 12 is utilized, and these surfaces coact in the formation of the scraping point 13.
An exceedingly simple device has thus been provided which may be readily attached to any conventional form of scrubbing brush, and which may be most readily and conveniently manipulated to procure various scrubbing operations.
I claim:
1. A scraper device comprising an elongated flattened handle, a blade projecting from one end portion of the handle and lying in a plane disposed substantially at right angles to the plane of the handle and including the longitudinal axis of the handle, said blade having a straight scraping edge on the side remote from the handle, and having a curved scraping edge extending from the outer end of the straight scraping edge and merged into the other side of the blade, the juncture of said scraping edges forming a scraping point at the portion of the blade most remote vfrom the handle.
2. A scraper attachment for brushes cornprising an attaching plate, a blade connected at one corner portion With one side of the plate, and projecting outwardly from said side at right angles thereto and lying in a plane at right angles to the plane of the plate, Said blade having a straight scraping edge on the side remote from the plate, and having a curved scraping edge extending from the outer end` of the straight scraping edge and mergedinto the other side of the blade, the juncture zof said scraping edges 15 forming a scraping point at the portion of the blade most remote from the plate.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my naine to this specilication in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
MELL BERT DUMAS.
In the presence of 'ARTHUR L. EBERT, BERTHA WINTER.
