FORK ATTACHMENT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEWIS LATTIMORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bonesteel, in the county of Gregory and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fork Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

This inventionrelates to agricultural implements and has special reference to a fork attachment.

One object of this invention is the production of an efficient means for firmly and positively holding the fork head upon the handle.

Another object of this invention is the productionof a fork attachment wherein a detachable means is employed for holding the fork upon the handle this means being so constructed as to be easily applied to any conventional form of a fork or a rake.

One practical form of construction and assembly of the present invention will be hereinafter described and is illustrated in the drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the fork attachment.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the attachment in use, the fork handle being broken away.

In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, about to be described, 5 indicates the base of the fork head, fromwhich extends the usual tines 6. The shank 7, extends from the fork head intermediate its ends in the opposite direction to the tines 6 as is the usual construction to be passed into and supported by a handle 8. The ferrule 9 is fixed upon the handleS at one end thereof to reinforce the handle at this point.

With the forks now in use and also with'rakes, and the like, after the opening in the handle 8 into which the shank 7 extends is slightly enlarged, the fork head or rake head as the case may be, becomes loose and is often displaced. Thereupon it is difficult to use the implement for the head will not remain in engagement with the handle long enough to perform its prescribed function. As above pointed out, it is the object of this invention to overcome this objection.

- The. retaining bolt,16- is provided, with a head 17 and passesthroughthe bar 10 inthe opposite directiorrto the bodies, 12 of the retaining hooks 11.1 The head 17 bears upon the opposite side of the bar 10 to the heads 13. This bolt 16 passes through the twisted ends 15 of the clamp 14 and carries; a pair of nuts 18, the nuts 18 fittingaupon opposite sides of the cars 15, thus releasablyholding the bolt 16 in a fixed position.

When the device is in use, it is to be understood that the retaining hooks .are .at all times in engagement withthe bar 10., When thefork head is loosethe retaining hooks 11 are slipped about. the base thereof, while the clamp 14 is positioned upon the, handle 8 adjacent the end of the ferrule 9. The bolt 16 is then passed throughthe body 10,-having one nut 18 upon the threaded endportion thereof, This bolt is then passed through the twisted ends of the clamp 14. The remaining nut 18 is then screwed onto the end-of the bolt, thus fixingithe bolt upon the clamp 14.. It is obvious that by an adjustment of the nuts 18 the distance between the bar 10 and the clamp 14 may be. de-

creased or increased as may be foundneces.

Although the device .is described. as being employed for fixing a fork head upon a handle it'is obvious that without departing in the least from the spirit of the invention, it may be employed for retaining a rake head upon its handle while by slight modifications of the device it may likewise be employed other implement heads upon their handles.

It will therefore be noted that the device is of such construction as to facilitate its rapid and easy attachment to ordinary forms of rakes or like implements now in use and that by position of the bolts 16 the attachments may be used upon devices wherein the ferrules are of different lengths, while by the drawing action of the bolt, the bar will be urged toward the clamp and thus the retaining books. will firmly hold the head upon the handle.

The foregoing description and accompanying drawings have reference to what might be considered to be the preferred or approved form of my invention. I desire it to be understood, that I may make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may rove expedient and fall within the scope of t e appended claims.

Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a handle, ahead mounted upon said handle, a bar extending transversely across said handle, securing means carried by said bar and engaging said head, a clamp mounted upon said handle, and means adjustably connecting said bar to said clamp, and thus holding said head upon said handle.

2. In a device of the class described, the

' combination of a handle, a head carried by said handle, a bar extending transversely of said handle, retaining means carried by said bar and engaging the said head,qa clamp mounted upon said'handle, and a bolt adjustably connecting said bar to said clamp,

thus holding said head upon said handle.

3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a handle, a head carried by said handle, a bar extending transversely across said handle, retaining hooks having bodies projecting through said bar, said bodies having heads upon their ends, whereby said bodies are held from disengaging said bar, said hooks engaging said head, a clamp positioned upon said handle, and means adjustably connecting said bar to said clamp for retaining said head upon said handle.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a handle having a ferrule at one end, a head having a shank extending into the mentioned end of said handle, a bar extending across said ferrule, retaining hooks having bodies projecting through said bar, said bodies having heads, whereby said bodies are held from disengaging said bar, said hooks engaging said head, a clamp fitting about said handle at the inner end of said ferrule, said clamp having twisted ends extending at right angles to the body of the clamp, a headed bolt passing through said bar and through the twisted ends of said clamp, and nuts carried upon said bolt and engaging said twisted ends, thus adjustably connecting said bar tosaid clamp, whereby said head will be held upon said handle.

5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a handle, a head carried by said handle, a bar extending transversely across said handle, retaining hooks having bodies projecting through said bar and ter minating in heads, whereby said bodies are held from disengaging said bar, said hooks engaging said head, a clamp fitting about said handle, said clamp having twisted ends extending at right angles to the body of the clamp, a headed bolt passing through said bar and through the twisted ends of said clamp, and nuts carried upon said bolt and engaging said twisted ends, thus connecting said bar to said. clamp, whereby said head will be held upon said handle.

6. Ina device of the class described, the combination of a'handle, a head carried by said handle, a bar extending transversely of said head, head engaging means carried by said bar and engaging said head, a clamp fitting about said handle, said clamp having twisted ends extending at right angles to the body of the clamp, a bolt passing through said bar and through the twisted ends of said clamp, and nuts said bolt and engaging said twisted ends, thus connecting said bar to said clamp,

whereby said head will be held upon said handle.
