APPUCATION FILED NOV. 28. 1916. l ,309,7 1 6. Patented July 15, 1919.
UNITED `STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NILS P. BOLIN, OF BROCKTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, OIE` PATERSON, NEW JERSEY, A COR- PORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
LAs'rNe-MACHINE,
Patented July 15, 1919.
Application filed November 28, 1916. Serial No. 133,881.
To all whom t may concern f Be it known that I, N ILs P. BoLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, provements in Lasting-ll/Iachines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to lasting-machines and particularly to mechanism to be applied to or incorporated in machines of the type known as bed lasting machines such as is shown, for example, in United States Letters Patent No. 1,018,477, granted February 27, 1912, on application of' Matthias Brock.
In lasting the toe portion of a shoe upper upon machines of this type it is customary Vfor the operator to close the toe lasting plates in at a point somewhat below the plane of the innersole and to press them against the upper on the last while he moves them upwardly. The pressure and friction of the lasting plates or wipers tend to smooth the upper out against the last. to draw it tight, and to gather in the fullness of the Lupper and carry it to a point above the plane of the last bottom. Frequently a hand tool, called a spreader, is employed to press the upper downwardly `-and outwardly over the top faces of the wipers to increase their tensioning and smoothing effect.
An object of this invention is to provide improved auxiliary lasting mechanism to be employed for producing more effective toe lasting in combination with the usual toe lasting head movable vertically and having forwardly and inwardly closing wipers.
A feature of the invention consists in the combination with a fiexible spreader member which is adapted to be forced by hand against the margin of upper outwardly overlying the wipers, of improved vmeans for expanding the spreader during the lasting operation. Preferably the expansion of the spreader is effected by relative movement of the toe lasting head andthe wipers. This relative movement is produced in the construction shown by forward movement of the wipers which carry the spreader with them while the joint of a toggle remains stationary due to its being held from movehave invented certain Im-4 ment by a non-extensible connection with the toe lasting head.
The foregoing and other features of the invention will appear more fully from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings and will be pointed out in the appended claims. n Figure 1 is a perspectiveview 0f the lasting head of a bed lasting machine equipped with the spreader embodying this invention and shows the wipers closed and the end portions of the spreader expanded against the wipers;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view mechanism.
The frame of the vertically movable toe lasting head is indicated at 2. This frame is mounted for vertical movement and is operated by means of a treadle 4 through suitable connections to move the wipers vertically in their upwiping action against the sides and end of the last. A frame is pivoted to the `frame 2 at 8 about which pivot the wipers may be adjusted to the longitudinal inclination of the last bottom by means of a screw 10. The wiper box 12 has a sleeve 14 journaled in the frame G, the sleeve being adjustable about its longitudinal axis by means of a screw 1G to vary the lateral inclination of the wipers in accordance with the transverse inclination of the last bottom. Through the sleeve 14 a wiper operating rod 18 extends which is moved longitudinally by a lever 20. At the inner end of the rod 18 is a cross piece 22 which is connected to wiper carriers 24 by links 2G. Movement of the wiper carriers 24 is controlled by slots 28 which are engaged by rolls 30 mounted on studs 32 fixed in the box 12. Upon the carriers 24 are rigidly .mounted wipers 34.
Thetoe of the shoe is supported by a toe rest 40 upon which it is firmly held by a hold-down arm 42 having a finger 44 extending toward the toe and acting to hold down the toe portion of the innersole.
The spreader comprises a support 50 having a handle 52 secured to itat one end and at the other end carrying a spreader member 54 rigidly secured to it. The spreader member 54 preferably comprises a relatively thin flexible and resilient strip or plate so arranged that one edge maybe presented to the margin of upper which lies over the wipers and against which `it may be held by the handle 52. The normal -orfunexpande shape of the spreader member is shown in Fig'. 3. The spreader pressed against the central part of the toe portion of the upper and causing a longitudinal stretching of the upper to accom pany the upward wiping action .of .the wipers. The ends of the spreader member 54 are connected by a. togglexcomprising links 56, 57 which are pivoted to a block 58.y The block 58 ycarries an eye-bolt 60 which is connected to a pin by a non-extensible through'an |opening in the frame 50. pin 62 is .connected to the frame 50 by ,yielding or extensible connectionssliown as comprising a spring 66 and a link rod 68. VVhen the lower face of the wipers reachesV the plane of the upper surface of the innersole and begins to advance on -to the feather of the innersole, the spreader, by its. frictional contact with the upper, is carried toward link rod 64 which 'passes Y the heel of the shoe relatively to the joint of the toggle 5 6, 57, causing the toggle to straighten and the spreader member 54 to be expanded laterally, its end portions press-v ing the upper against th'e inwardly closing wipers and applying an additional tension to the upper at the corners and sides of the toe. The straightening of thetoggle acts to reduce the curvature of the spreader and to carry the end portions outwardly against the upper at the corners of thetoe. Since the closing movement of the wipers accompanies their movement of advance over the shoe bottom and the advance of the wipers automatically effects the lateral expansion of the spreader, the wipers and end'portions of the spreader mutually approach each other and cause the upper` t0; be firmly gripped and held at the corners of the toe between the wipers and the spreader as the wipers close and the lasting and tensioning effect of the wipers is thereby materially increased. By means of the handle 52 the operator has the lateral clamping action of the spreader under 4his control and may relieve it by lessening downward pressure on the spreader handle in case, in his judgment, the upper is being too iirmly held for lasting the particular shoe which is being operated upon. v
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byUnited States Letter Patent: Y
