Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, T'TOMER S. DOUGLASS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lathrop, in the county of Clinton and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Valve-Grinding Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lITIPIOVOlDGDl'S in valve grinding mechanisms.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel valve grinding mechanism which is simple in construction, cheap to manut'ac ture, which is strong and durable and not liable to get out of order, which is etlicient in operation, and with which several valves may be simultaneously ground.
My invention provides further novel means by which the speed of oscillation of the valve supporting members may be changed without changing the speed of rotation of the driving shaft which actuates the valve supporting members.
My invention provides still further novel means for effecting oscillation of the valve supporting members.
My invention also provides novel means for oscillatably supporting the valve supporting members.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.

1 designates a supporting frame, which is adapted to be mounted upon any suitable support, such as a bench 2.
The frame 1 is provided with a longitudinal vertically disposed board 3, on the rear side of which are mounted a plurality of boxes, each comprising an inner member 1, to the outer side of which is secured an outer cup-shaped member 5, which is secured to the member at by means of bolts 6 which extend through the board 3.
A plurality of spur-gear wheels 7 are respectively oscillatably mounted in the members Each gear wheel 7 is provided with an elongated hub 8 which is oscillatably mounted in and extends through the box members r and 5 and also through a box 9, which is secured to the front side of the board 3, by means of bolts 10.
The hub 8 of each gear wheel is provided with an axial hole, preferably square in cross section and which has fitted in it the squared portion of a horizontal transverse shaft 11, the forward end of which is externally screw-threaded and has fitted thereon a nut comprising an internally screw-threaded sleeve 12 which bears against the adjacent end of the hub 8 and which is adapted to have renmvably fitted in it the thriadcd stem 13 of an adapter ll. the outer end of which is provided with alongitudinal axial hole 15, which is adapted to receive and support the stem of a valve, not shown, which is to be ground. The adapter l-l is provided with a set screw 16, which is adapted to bear against and hold the stem of the valve in the adapter.
Each shaft 11 is provided with a shoulder 17, Fig. 1, which bears against the rear end of the hub 8.
The rear end of the shaft 11 is provided with a longitudinal axial serewpthreaded hole 18, which is adapted to receive the screw-threaded stem 13 of another adapter 1 1, which corresponds in construction to the adapter already described.
Meshing with the gear wheels 7 is a longitudinal horizontal reciproeative rack 15), which is provided with a longitudinal flange 20, Fig. 4, which overlaps and engages the outer sides of the gears 7.
Each box member 4.- is provided, above the hub 8, with a vertical radial slot 21, in which is mounted a bolt 22, which extends rearwardly parallel with the shaft 11 and which has mounted on it a sleeve 23, which is held clamped at its inner end against the member l, by means of a nut 24: mounted upon the threaded outer end of the bolt Rotatably mounted on the sleeve 23 is a roller 25, which is adapted to have rolling engagement with the upper side of the rack 19, and which is provided with a peripheral flange 26, which engages the outer side of the rack 19 for retaining the rack engaged with the gear wheels 7.
The bolt 22, sleeve 23 and' nut 24lfbrm a roller support, which is radially adjustable in the-slot21 ofthe-member l, for the pur' pose of permitting different size gear. wheelsspeed of the-driving shaft: which operates the mechanism.
Mountedin the. frame 1 and adapted; for continuous rotation is a driving shaft. 28-, which has mounted on it a tight pulley 29 and a loose pulley 30 adaptechtobe engaged and driven by abelt, not shown, which is adapte'dto be shifted from one pulley to the other by means of abelt. shifter 31, which may be of any suitable construction. In'the drawing, I have illustrated the belt shifter lever as being pivotally. mounted on aplatform 32 with which the frame lisprovided.
The under side of the lever 31 has amilled portion 33., which engages with the. similar milled portion of a plate platform 32 by means ofa vertical bolt. 35,- having on itsupperend a nut 36, which bears against the upper end 1 of a coil spring 37 Fig; 5, which bears-against the lever 31.
For reciprocatingthe.rack-.19, the latter has pivoted'to itone end of a link 38, the other. end of'which is pivoted; by. a transverse bolt. 39 to theupper endof a vertical lever 40, which is pivoted by a transverse horizontal bolt 41 to. and betweelrthe board 3 andaplate 42 which 1SS8CL1l6Cl1tO the rear side of said board. Thelower end of the lever 10 is pivoted by a transverse bolt 13to. one end of a'longitudinalconnectingrod 44:, the other end of which-ispivotedto a:transverse. crank pin 4:5,Fig. 3, with which a bevel 1 gear 46 isprovided. The gear wheel 46 is mounted upon aihorizontal transverse stud l7, which is secured to theframe 1.- Meshing with the gear wheel 46-is .a. bevel gear wheel 48, which is rigidly secured; to the driving shaft 28'. 111 111116 operation of my invention, when the belt shifter. lever 31 is shifted to throw the belt onto the tight pulley 29, the driving shaft 28 will be rotated, thus rotating the gear 46"by means of the gear 48, and there by reciprocating-the rack 19 through the intermediacy of the rod 44, lever 40 and link 38. The reciprocation-of the rack 19 oscillates the. gear wheels 7 and with them the shafts 11 and the valves carried thereby.
Theboxmemberst. and5 provide each a chamber-49, Fig. 4, adapted to contain oil in whichthe. gear will run. The box member 5 may be provided with an oil hole 50, with which the forward portion of the. hub 8 may be lubricated. The box-Q-may be provided with an oil hole 51 for receiving oil to lubricate :the adjacent ends of the hub S.

In a valve grinding mechanism, .a supportingframdaboX mounted thereon, a gear wheel having" a hub oscillatably mounted in said box, a shaft. extending through and rotatable with said hub and bearing against one end of said hub and having ascrew-threaded end, a nut mounted on said screw-threaded end andrbearing against the other end of saidhub, theopposite end of said shaft having means for supporting a valve to be ground, a rack meshing with said gear wheel, and means for reciprocating said rack.
4. In a valve grinding mechanism, a supporting frame, a box secured thereto, a gear wheel having a hub oseillatably mounted in said box, a shaft extending through and oscillatable with said hub and bearing against one end of said hub and having one end externally screw-tln'eaded, a screwthreaded sleeve fitted on said screw-threaded end and adapted to receive an adapter for supporting a valve to be ground, the other end of said shaft having means for supporting an adapter adapted to support another valve to be ground, a rack meshing with said gear wheel, and means for reciprocating said 'ack.
5. In a valve grinding mechanism, a supporting frame, a box secured thereto, a gear wheel having a hub oscillatably mounted in said box, a shaft mounted in and oscillatable with said hub, means carried at opposite ends of said shaft for respectively supporting two valves to be ground, a reciprocative rack meshing with said gear wheel, and means for reciprocating said rack.
6. In a valve grinding mechanism, a supporting f mile, a box secured thereto, a gear wheel rotatable in said box, a shaft secured to and oscillatable with said gear wheel and having means for supporting a valve to be ground, a roller support adjustable toward and from said gear wheel, a rack meshing with said gear wheel and having a longitudinal flange engaging the outer side of said gear wheel, a roller on said roller support adapted to have rolling engagement with said rack and having a peripheral flange engaging the outer side of said rack, and means for reciprocating said rack.
7. In a valve grinding mechanism, a supporting frame, a box secured thereto having a radical slot, a gear wheel having a hub oscillatably mounted in said box, a shaft mounted in and oscillatable with said hub and having means for supporting a valve to be ground, a roller support adjustable in said slot toward and from said gear wheel, a rack meshing with said gear wheel, a roller mounted on said roller support and adapted for rolling engagement with said rack, and means for reciprocating said rack.
8. In a valve grinding mechanism, a supporting frame, a box secured thereto having a radical slot, a gear wheel rotatable in said box and having a hub, a shaft mounted in and oscillatable with said hub, a rack meshing with said gear wheel, the shaft having means for supporting a valve to be ground, a roller support adjustable in said slot toward and from said gear wheel, a roller mounted on said roller support and adapted to have rolling engagement with said rack and having a periphe 'al flange engaging the outer side of said rack, and means for reciprocating said rack.
9. In a valve grinding mechanism, a supporting frame, a box secured thereto, a gear wheel rotatable in said box, a shaft extending through and oscillatable with said gear wheel and havin at one end a screwthreaded hole ancl having its other end externally screw-threaded, a screw-tl1readed sleeve fitted on the externally threaded end of said shaft, two adapters respectively fitted in said sleeve and said screw-tln'eaded hole and adapted to respectively support two valves to be ground, a rack meshing with said gear wheel, and means for reciprocating said rack.
10. In a valve grinding mechanism, a supporting frame, a box secured thereto, a gear wheel having a hub oscillatably mounted in said box, a shaft extending through and oscillatable with said hub and bearing against one end of said hub and having one end externally screw-threaded and a screwthreaded hole in its other end, a screwthreaded sleeve fitted on the externally threaded end of said shaft and bearing against the other end of said hub, two adapters fitted respectively in said sleeve and in said hole and adapted each to support a valve to "be ground, a rack meshing with said gear wheel, and means for reciprocating said rack.
