END-FACING MACHINE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUCIEN LYnoMANs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful End-Facing Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide means for facing the abutting ends of the sections of a machine bed or the like, and particularly to provide means for facing the opposite ends of a section so that said ends shall be parallel.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing an end-facing machine embodying my invention, opera.- tively mounted upon a bed section. Fig. 2

In the drawings, (t denotes a section of the bed of a lathe, gun-boring machine or the like. The bed section a comprises carriage ways 7, each having an upper surface 9, an inner vertical surface j and an inner horizontal surface it.
1 is a sub-base comprising two portions 1 and l Fig. 3) arranged to extend longitudinally of the carriage ways f, each of said portions having on its upper side two ribs 2 on which the end-facing mechanism may be supported, and having at its outer side a longitudinal flange 3 for engagement by clamping devices on the end-facing mechanism. The sub-base is supported upon the rough unplaned ways f of the bed section by means of vertical adjusting screws 4 which extend through openings 5 in the portions 1* and 1 and bear against the upper surfaces g of the ways. The sub-base is adjusted with reference to a vertical plane by means of adjusting screws 6, which extend through horizontal openings in the longitudinal side walls 8 of a chamber or box 9 extending downwardly between the portions 1 and 1" of the sub-base. By means of the adjusting screws 1 and 6, the sub-base may be properly located upon the bed section a. Suitable means may be provided for securing the subbase to the bed section, as, for example, clamping members 10, each supported at a point between its ends by a screw 11, the

head of which screw is supported by a fork orbifurcated lug 12 on the sub-base over hanging the interior of the box 9. The outer end of each clamping member 10 is adapted to underlie the surface of the adjacent. way 7". The inner end of each clamping member is arranged to be drawn downwardly bymeans of an adjusting screw ei'igaging the bottom wall of the box 9. By
means of the screws 12 and 13 the members 10 may be clamped tightly against the surfaces is.
In practice, the bed sections of the various machines being manufactured may vary in length, and for this reason the end-facing mechanism is preferably supported upon of sub-bases are mounted upon the bed,
section a the ends of which are to be faced, and all of said sub-bases are accurately alined with reference to each other before the operation of facing the ends of the bed section is begun.
Theform of end-facing mechanism herein shown comprises a frame H adapted to rest upon the surfaces 2 of the subbases and arranged to be rigidly secured to the sub-bases by suitable means such as clamping plates 15, which are held against the lower surfaces of the flanges 3 by means of clamping bolts 16.
At one end of the frame 14 is a downwardly extending arm 17 which is spaced away from the adjacent portionof the frame to provide an open space 18. In the lower end of the arm 17 is rotatably mounted a horizontal shaft or arbor 19. The inner end of the shaft 19 is mounted in a bearing 19 (Fig. 1) secured to the frame 14. Each sub-base has a space 1 between the portions 1 and 1 so as to becapable of accommodating the bearing 19. On the shaft 19 is fixed a wheel QOarranged to revolve in the space 18 and opposite the end of the bed section a. The wheel 20 may be revolved in any suitable manner. Herein the wheel is shown as being a spur gear wheel, mesh ing with a pinion 21 on horizontal shaft 22 in the arm 17. Upon the outer end of the shaft 22 is a spur gear wheel 23 that meshes with a pinion 2a on a shaft 25 carried by the frame l t. The shaft 25 is driven from an electric motor 26 by means of intermeshing gears 27 and 27, said motor being mounted upon the frame 1%.
The cutting means may be of any suitable character. Herein I have shown two cutting tools 28, each carried by a slide 29, said slides being mounted upon a guide 30 secured to one side of the wheel 20. 31 is a rod provided with right-hand and lefthand screw-threads engaging correspondingly threaded portions .,c0nnected to the slides 29 for simultaneously moving said slides toward or away from each other. The rod 31 is arranged to be rotated by suitable means, as, for example, a star wheel 32 secured to one end of said rod and engaging a pin 33 carried by the frame of the ma chine. In each revolution of the wheel 20 the star wheel engages the pin 33 and is turned through the distance of one tooth so as to move the slides 29 toward each other, and thus carry the tools 28 across the work. The tools may be returned to starting position by manually rotating the rod 31 in the reverse direction.
One of the tools 28 may take a roughing cut and the other a finishing cut.
After one end of the bed section a has been faced, the frame 1% is unclamped from the subbases l, transferred to the opposite end of the bed section, and there clamped to the sub-bases. In this manner the opposite ends of the bed sections a are faced so as to be exactly parallel with each other.
While the invention has been herein disclosed as embodied in an end-facing machine, it will be understood that the invention may have other uses.
In the following claims, I term bed to denote an elongated castin one or both ends of which are to be faced.
I claim as my invention:
1. A machine for facing an end of a machine bed having carriage ways upon the upper side of said bed, said end-facing machine having, in combination, a sub-base, means for adjustably mounting the sub-base upon the carriage ways, means for securing the sub-base to the carriage ways in adjusted position, a frame arranged to be rigidly secured to and above the sub-base, a incinber rotatably mounted in said frame opposite one end of the machine bed, said member being arranged for rotation in a plane approximately perpendicular to the subbase, cutting means carried by said member to face said end of the bed, and means on said frame for rotating said member and feeding the cutting means across the end of the bed.
2. A machine for facing an end of a n'iarhine bed having carriage ways upon the have used the upper side of said bed, said end-facing machine having in combination, a sub -base arranged to be removably mounted upon the carriage ways, a frame arranged to be removably mounted upon the top of the subbase, and cutting means carried by said frame to face one end of the bed, said cutting means overhanging the adjacent end of said sub-base.
3. A machine for facing an end of a machine bed having carriage ways upon the upper side of said bed, said end-facing machine, having in combination, a sub-base, means for adjustably securing the sub-base upon the carriage ways, a frame arranged to be rigidly secured to the top of the sub-base, and cutting means carried by said frame and operating in a vertical plane to face one end of the machine bed, said cutting means overhanging the adjacent end of the subbase.
4c. A machine for facing an end of a nachine bed having carriage ways upon the upper side of said bed, said machine having, in combination, a sub-base, means for adj ustably mounting the sub-base upon the carriage ways, means for securing the sub base in adjusted position, and an end-facing mechanism arranged to be detachably mounted upon the top of said sub-base to operate upon the end of the bed.
5. A portable machine for operating upon a machine bed having two carriage ways, said machine having, in combination, means engaging the upper sides of the carriage ways for adjustably supporting the machine upon said ways, means engaging said carriage ways for adjusting the machine with reference to a vertical plane, and cutting mechanism for operating upon the machine bed.
6. A portable machine for operating upon a machine bed having two carriage ways, said machine having, in combination, a subbase, a means for rigidly securing the sub base to said carriage. ways, a frame, means for detachably securing the frame to the sub-base, and cutting mechanism on the frame for operating upon the machine bed.
7. In a portable machine for operating upon a machine bed, a sub-base comprising two longitudinal portions adapted to men lie the carriage ways of the machine bed, vertical adjusting screws carried by said portions to bear upon the upper surfaces of said carriage ways, a box extending downwardly from and located between said longitudinal portions, horizontal adjusting screws carried by said box and arranged to engage opposed portions of the machine bed to adjust the sub-base in a vertical plane, clamping members carried by said box and projecting from opposite sides thereof to underlie portions of the machine bed, and means carried by the box for pressing said ends of the clamping members against said portions of the machine bed.
8. In a portable machine for operating upon a machine bed, a sub-base adapted to overlie the carriage ways of the machine bed, vertical adjusting screws carried by the sub-base to bear upon the upper surfaces of said carriage ways, horizontal adjusting screws carried by said sub-base and arranged to engage opposed portions of the machine bed to adjust the sub-base in a vertical plane, clamping members carried by said sub-base and arranged to underlie portions of the machine bed, and means carried by the sub-base for pressing said clamping members against said portions of the machine bed.
9. In a portable machine for operating upon a machine bed a sub-base adapted to overlie the carriage ways of the machine bed, vertical adjusting screws carried by said sub-base and adapted to support the subbase upon said carriage ways,, horizontal adjusting screws carried by the sub-base to engage opposed portions of the machine bed to adjust the sub-base in a vertical plane, and means for securing the sub-base to the machine bed in adjusted position.
10. In a portable machine for operating upon a machine bed, a sub-base adapted to overlie the carriage ways of the machine bed, means for adjustably supporting the sub-base upon said carriage ways, means to adjust the sub-base in a vertical plane, and means for securing the sub-base to the machine bed in adjusted position.
11. In a portable machine for operating upon a machine bed, a sub-base comprising two longitudinal portions adapted to over-- lie the carriage ways of the machine bed, vertical adjusting screws carried by said longitudinal. portions and adapted to support the sub-base upon said carriage ways, horizontal adjusting screws carried by the sub-base to engage opposed portions of the machine bed to adjust the sub-base in a vertical plane, and means for securing the subbase to the machine bed in adjusted position. 12. In a portable machine for operating upon a machine bed, a sub-base having two longitudinal portions, vertical adjusting screws carried by said portions, a box extending downwardly from and between said longitudinal portions, horizontal adjusting screws carried by said box, and means carried by said box for securing the subbase to the work.
18. A machine for facing an end of a machine bed having parallel carriage ways extending longitudinally of the bed at the upper side of the bed, said end-facing machine having, in combination. a sub-base adapted to be mounted upon the carriage ways, adjustable means for supporting thc sub-base upon the carriage ways, means for clamping the sub-base to the carriage ways in adjusted position, a frame arranged to be rigidly secured to the sub-base, and a cutting means carried by said frame to face one end of the machine bed, said cutting means overhanging the adjacent end of said sub-base.
14. A machine for facing an end of a machine bed having parallel carriage ways extending longitudinally of the bed at the upper side of the bed, said end-facing machine having, in combination, a subbase adapted to be mounted upon the carriage ways, adjustable means for supporting the sub-base upon the carriage ways, means for clamping the sub-base to the carriage ways in adjusted position, and an end-facing mechanism arranged to be detachably c011- nected to said sub-base to face an end of the machine bed.
15. In a portable machine for operating upon a machine bed having two unfinished parallel carriage ways extending longitudi nally of the machine bed along the upper side thereof, a subbase adapted to overlie said carriage ways, means for adjustably supporting the sub-base upon said carriage ways, in substantial parallelism therewith and means for securing the sub-base to the carriage ways in adjusted position.
16. An apparatus for facing an end of a machine bed having carriage ways, said endfacing apparatus having, in combination, a support, means for adjustably mounting the support upon the carriage ways in substantial parallelism therewith, means for securing the support in adjusted position, and means carried by the support for facing an end of the machine bed.
17. An apparatus for facing an end of a machine bed having two parallel carriage ways on the upper side of the bed, said apparatus having, in combination, a support arranged to be removably mounted in substantial parallelism therewith upon the carriage ways, and cutting means carried by said support to'face one end of the bed, said cutting means overhanging-the adjacent end of said support.
18. An apparatus for operating upon a machine bed having two parallel carriage ways, said apparatus comprising a support adapted to overlie said carriage ways, means for adjust-ably alining and fixing said support to the carriage ways, and cutting means on the support for operating upon the machine bed.
