Be it known that l, Geenen fnrnonns, a citizen ot' the United States, and a resident of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State ot' Indiana` have invented a certain new and uselul Valve-Operating Mechanism; and l do hereby declare that the following is Aa full, clear, and exact description thereof, ret'- eience being had t0 the accompanying drawio ings, in which like numerals roter to like parts.
This invention relates to a` valve operating means for engines and the prime object of the invention is the provision of means for l5 mechanically opening and closing the valve.
Ti'vsfuither feature of the invention. 1s the provision ot' yielding means in connection with the stem oit' the valve and the operating lever therefor and means to compensate for any variation in the vparts ot the valve through expansion or contraction.'
A further feature of the invention is the provision of means to prevent Abthe parts of the device from rattling or making unnecessary noise by the parts of the device working together, and a further feature ot the inf vention is the provision of a cam structure which will positively operate the valve and hold the valve operating parts in proper alinement and against any twisting movement.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof showing the valve in open position. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation partly in section of the valve operatingcam wheel and parts cooperating therewith, and llig. e is a detail sectional view as seen on line M of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numeralsdesignate corresponding parts throughout the several views, l indicates the cylinder ot an engine which may be'of the usual or any preferred construction, and 2 indicates the head ofthe cylinder, said head having a port 3 therein, and a valve seat said valve having a stem 6, which passes upwardly through a bearing 3 in the head and Specification of Letters latent.

Coperating with said stein 6 above the bearing 7 is a rocking lever 8 which is pivoted at its longitudinal center between earsv 9 projecting upwardly from. the head 2. Both ends of the rocking lever 8 are bifurcated as shown in Fig. a, the arms 10 at the inner end of the lever passing on opposite sides of the stein, 6, the upper and lower edges of said arms being oval shaped So that they will have rocking action with the parts with A which they engage.
The projecting end ot the stem 6 is provided with threads 11, nuts 1Q, being turned on to the threads ll and so positioned upon the stein 6 that the lower face of the arms l0 will rest thereon. The arms 1G are held against the nuts 12 through the medium of the coil spring i3, the lower end of which rests upon the washer le surrounding the stem 6, while the upper end thereof bears against aA plate l5 also surrounding the stein 6, the plate being held in adjustedV position on the stem by means of a. nut 1G. The tension of the spring is such as to normally cause practically unyielding action lot the valve,\but is so arranged that any contraction or expansion ot the valve or its stein will be accommodated, thus holding the adjustment between the valve stem and the lever uniform at all times.
The lever 8 is rocked upon its pivot` through theinedium of a cani.l wheel 17 and a pitinan 18, the cam wheel 17 being keyed to a driven shaft 19, so as to positively rotate the cam wheel. IThe upper end of the pitman i8 is threaded and the end of the iocking lever 8 coperating therewith is likewise bifurcated to provide arms 20 which pass on opposite sides of said pitman, the upper and lower edges of said arms being rounded or formed oval so that they will have rocking action with the parts with which they contact. l
The vlower edges of the arms 2O bear against the washer 2l, while the upper edges ot said arms bear against nuts 22 threaded on to the upper end of the pitman 18. ln order to prevent pounding noise or rattling between the arms "20 and the washer 2l and nuts 22,'a cup is threaded on to the pitman 1S before the washer and nuts are placed thereon and in said cup is placed a tension spring 2l which bears against the lower tace 'ot the washer 21 and holds the same in close-proximity to the lower faces of the arms 2O and holds the upper edges of said arms against the lower face or the nuts.
Attached to the lower end or the pitman 18 is a slide blocl Q5 which is preferably square in cross section and extends through a ybearing 26 which has an opening therethrough to receive the slide block. Attached to the lower end of the slide block and on opposite sides thereof are rollers 27 which rollers engage cam channels 28', so that when the cam wheel is rotated the pit man 18 will be moved longitudinally to open or close the valve 5. The cam wheel is preferably formed of twin parts which are faced against each other, the registering channels 2S for receiving the rollers 27 being on the inner meeting faces of the sectionsv of the cam wheel so as to exclude the same from view, and also for holding the pitman and the slide block against rotation and in proper alinement.
The slide block 25 enters a peripheral groove 29 formed around the cam wheel and between the meeting faces of the two sections thereof.
By this construction it will be seen that the valve will be positively moved ingboth directions mechanically and by properly arranging the cam'v/-heel the operation of the valve will be properly timed for opening and closing.
It will likewise be seen that by'providing yielding means for holding the ends of the rocking level in engagement with their cooperating parts, that any noise or rattling cfu wear will be eliminated and compensated It will Yfurther be seen that as there" are practically no parts to become worn the device will last indefinitely and can successfully be applied to any preferred make ot engine requiring valves for controlling the Aadmission of propelling medium thereto.
rlhe invention claimed is l. ln a valve operating mechanism, the combination with a valve having a stem, of a pivotally mounted operating lever, means for connecting one end of the lever to the valve stem, yielding means for holding the end of the lever against parts of the valve stem, a pitman cooperating with the opposite end ot' said lever, means on the pitman above the lever against which the end of the 'lever bears, asspring below the end of the lever for holding the end of the lever against the bearing parts of the pitman, a cup threaded onto said pitman for carrying said spring, and a cam Wheel for operating said pitman, whereby the valve will be positively opened or closed.
2. ln a valve operating mechanism, the combination with a valve having a stem, of a pivotally mounted lever, having bifurcated ends, a spring structure carried by the valve stem, for directing pressure against one end of the lever, a pitman cooperating with the opposite end of the lever, a spring carried by the pitman for directing pressure against the end of the lever cooperating with the pitman, rollers carried by the pitman, and a cam wheel having cam channels therein in which the rollers travel.
