UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TRANGOTT L. MAYNARD, OF SOUTHFIELD, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN STRAW-C-UTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,936, dated August 27, 1872.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TRANGOTT L. MAY- NARD, of Southfield,in the county of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Feed-Cutters and I do declare that the following is a true and ac.- curate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon and being a part of this specification in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved feed-cutter. Fig. 2 is a side elevation taken from the opposite side seen in Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical'sect-ion.
Like letters refer to like parts in each figure.
The nature of this invention relates to an improvement in that class of feed-cutting machines in which the cutting of the feed is effectedothrough one or more curved knives revolving in front of and in contact with the throat of the feed-box; and its object is to so arrange the feeding mechanism as that the feeding of the material to the knives will be continuously at a uniform speed, however the volume may vary. The invention consists in the peculiar arrangement of the feeding mechanism, and the construct-ion and arrangement 1 of the various parts of the machine, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing, A represents the framework of my machine, and B the feed-box placed thereon, and provided with metallic throat-plates a at the end. 0 is the drivingshaft, journaled in brackets 12, at the left side of the box, looking at it from thefront or cutting end. On the end of this shaft is abalance-wheel, D, provided with a hand-crank, 0, on the outer side of one of its arms. On studs projecting inwardly there are secured two curved cuttingknives, E, which, in the rotation of the wheel sweep past and in contact with the edges of the throat-plates a, cutting off any projecting material with a drawing out. Transversely through the side-bars of the frameA and near the front end there is journaled a shaft, F, carrying a worm-gear, G, which transmits to said shaft a slow motion derived from the drivin g-shaft through the worm- I placed thereon. At the other end of the shaft F is a bevelgear, J, which meshes with a pinion, K, on a vertical shaft, L, journaled in brackets at the side of the machine. On the shaft L is abarrel-pinion, M, with which meshes a crownwheel, N, on the end of a shaft which is tra-nsversely journaled in loose bearings d, sliding in slots in the sides of the feed-box. This shaft is provided with a feed-roll, O, which bears upon the material in the feed-box and feeds it forward to the throat. In the back part of the feed-box a, shaft, F, is journaled in sliding boxes P, which are adjusted by the screws 0. The bottom of the box is open between the shafts F F, and over them passes an endless belt, Q, which carries forward the material to be out. To cause the upper feed-roll to bear upon the material two rods, f, are hung on its ends, which support a frame, g, pivoted to the front legs of the frame, and a weighted lever, h, bearing on said frame exerts the required downward pressure on the feed-roll.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the frame A, feed-box B, shaft 0, wheel D, knives E, shafts F F, belt Q, worm I, worm-gear G, bevel-gears J K, shaft L, barrel-pinion M, crown-wheel N, feed-roll O, sliding boxes (1 d P P, adjustingscrews 6 e, rods ff, frame g, and weighted lever h, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially in the manner described, for the purpose specified.
TBANGOTT L. MAYNARD.
