Description

W. S. LAKIN.
EXTENSION BODY FOR VEHICLES.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 4. 1918.
j; gw gcg a rmml July 8, 1919.
V7 this 1313) istension pecificaticn o To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, WINFIELD S. Learn a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State oi New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Extension Bodies for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vehicle bodies and more especially to extensions used in connection with the body the obiect oi the invention being to adord the body the ap pearanoe of a passenger vehicle by provid ing a hood or boot for the rear of the same but which is to be removed when is desired to convert the vehicle into a delivery wagon and an extension is pulled out and locked. in addition to certain features designed to make the device a substantial load carrying vehicle other details and objects are more fully described in the following specification, set forth in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1; is a perspective view of the vehicle body arranged for passenger use.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the boot removed.
Fig. 3 shows the extension for carrying freight.
Fig. 4 shows a section. of one side of the extension in the vehicle body.
Fig. 5 shows the construction oi? the outer end of the extension.
The present invention is especially de= signed for use by parties who may desire to use an automobile as a passenger carrier for pleasure or who may require a light business truck to transport goods, the device being easily transformable for either purpose.
vehicle body of any type may be used and especially of that form known as a runabout and where the seat is located about the center of the vehicle frame ii and where the rear part 12 of said frame is provided with a boxing comprising side boards 13 each surmounted by a metal rail is projecting from which is a threaded stud 15 that passes through a flange 16 on the inside of the lower edge of the boot 17,-Fig. a, and by which means, with a thumb-nut 18, the boot is held in place, presenting an attractive appearance when the vehicle is used "for passengers only. Access is given to the interior Patented July t3, 393%.
Application filed January =3, 35.318. Serial Etc. 210,268.
of the cowl by means oi a door 19 secured by means of latches 20.
When it is desired to adapt the vehicle for hauling and delivery purposes the cowl is removed after releasing the flanges l6, and the body will appear as shown in Fig. 2, with the extension within the rear part of the frame. This extension consists oi a bottom 2-1 side pieces 22 and an and piece 23, the latter also acting as the rear side'of the frame, as shown in Fig. 1. The side pieces are reduced at their inner ends 2 so that they may pass over a bar 25 below the seat 16 and into slots 26 in the back of the latter, and said side pieces play beneath the rails 14 and are guided by the same and the boards 13 when the extension is drawn out, as shown in Fig. 3; it is locked in that position by the bolts 27 passing through a perforation in each side piece and each reduced end 2% and is titted with a wing nut 28 on the inside of the device, the same bolts being used to lock the extension within the frame and passing through perforation 29 in the side pieces 22, the bolts in both instances being rigid sup-= ports and firmly uniting the parts so that there is no shaking or rattling of the parts when occupying either position. To extend or retract the parts, however, the nut 28 must be removed to relocate the bolt in the perforations at the dilierent end of the ex tension.
To complete the carrier as shown in Fig. 3 side rails 30 having vertical pins 31 are provided to fit into the straps '32, onthe inside of the extension and on the outside of the side boards 13 and they brace the extension in its operative position and are divided and hinged so they may be folded and stored in the body.
In Fig. it will be seen that the bottom 13 of the body is provided with metal strips or rails 33 and that the extension is provided with corresponding rails 34 so that the wear is thrown on the strips as the extension is pulled in or out and at the same time the said strips or rails brace the extension.
To further brace the extension, the back piece 23 is attached to the sides as shown in Fig. 5 where its bolts 35 engage nuts 36 located in the recesses 37. As will be seen in Fig. 3 the sides 13 are strengthened by straps 38 on the inside.
This construction provides a strong and quickly changed to the closed shown in the first view;
substantial extension adapted to support considerable weight at its outer end and be form of body It is obvious that the parts may be otherwise arranged or modified without departing from the essential features above described or from the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new is:
1. In a vehicle body, the combination with the body and seat of a vehicle, of a boot for the rear of the body and adapted tobe removed, an extension fitting in the body, rails in the bottom of the body, cooperating rails on the underside of the extension, off-set rails on the body and comprising a drawer ,over-lapping the extension, and side rails adapted to keep the drawer in its extended position.
2. In a vehicle body, the combination with a body and seat, of side boards extending rearward from the seat, an extension comprising a drawer with reduced ends to fit beneath the seat, bolts locking and limiting the movement of the extension, rails beneath the extension, a boot to cover the extension When closed, and side rails with depending pins to fit in straps in the body and extension when the latter is drawn out.
Signed at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings arid State of New York, this 14th day of December, A. D. 1917. y
