J. BLACKBURN.
CABLE HANGER.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 21. 19W.

UNITED STATES PATENT oFmoE.
JASPER BLACKBURN, OF WEBSTER GROVES, MISSOURI. v Y
. CABLE-HANGER.
, scription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in cable hangers? arranged for suspending a cable, comprising one or more electrical conductors and a jacket therefor, from a messenger or aerial wire supported on spaced poles. 1,
The object of my improvements is to construct a hanger of a single piece of material,
such as spring wire, whose body is shaped to provide a number of points of support for a cable to minimize cable kinking, and
from which body at eachend thereof is a suspending arm which incline in opposite div rections' to engage the underneath surface of a messenger wire and which are spaced to be introduced over a cable, and each arm terminates in a hook for engagement over a messenger and in a manner to produce bending strain on the messenger to prevent lengthwise slipping of the hanger on the messenger.
My invention consists in the construction,
arrangement and combination of parts as will be fully, clearly and concisely set forth in my specification, pointed out in my claim and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 shows an end elevation of a cable hanger constructed according to my invention and applied to a messenger.
Fig. 2 is a view of the hanger and a section of messenger in perspective, and
, Fig. 3 is a plan'ofv the hanger.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 5, 6 and 7 designate cable supporting points of the body of the hanger, which is unclulated so as to-be formed as a unit and whose transverse sectional plane would present a dished or concaved bearing for a cable so that each of the supporting points for the cableengages the cable circumferentially for a considerable distance.
Arising from the point 5 of the body, or from one end of the body, is a suspending arm 8, and arising from the point 7, or from the other end of the body is a suspending Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 8, 1919,
Application filed February 21, 1917. Serial No. 150,209.
arm 9, and it is to benoted that these arms are each disposed atanangle to a vertical median line of the body and extended in relative op osite directions. The suspending arms, 1 y preference, also incline outwardly and upwardly with respect to the length of the cable supporting body so that their free ends have a greater relative spacing than their ends connected with the cable supporting points.
The arm 8 terminates in a hook '10, which is reversely bent over the arm, and out of parallelism therewith, to engage themessenger at a point removed lengthwise from the point of engagement of the arm'and diametrically opposite therefrom with respect to the messenger, and the body of the hook next its free end is spaced from the arm 8 a distance less than the diameter of the messenger, as shown in Fig. 1, so that .when applied to the messenger there will be a bending strain'exerted upon the messenger between the arm 8 and the free end portion of the hooklO.
The hook, however,- may be easily slipped over the messenger by bodily tilting the entire hanger; that is,'rotating the arm 8 over the messenger to a position holding the hook 10 substantially at a right angle'to' the messenger, at which position the hook 10may be readily placed over the messenger, and from which position the entire hanger is againrotated over the arm 8 to stand in alinement with the messenger, in which position the hook 10 stands obliquely to the messenger and exerts a bending strain thereon sufficient to prevent its being slipped lengthwise of the messenger, as when a cable is being drawn therethrough.
It is to be observed from Fig. 1 that when the hanger is hooked overthe messenger as just described, the arm 8 engages underneath the messenger and the hook 10 engages over the messenger so that the hanger is prevented from being displaced from the messenger except by manipulation, as will be made clear.
On the arm 9 of the hanger there is a hook 11, which is substantially the same as the hook 10, except for its relative reverse disposition, and the spacing of its free end from the arm 9, which is greater than the spacing of the free end of the hook 10 from the arm 8, so that it may be readily placed over a messenger -manually by moving it both laterally and vertically relative to the messenger, and in a definite direction so that when applied the operator must move the hook 11 bodily over the messenger and then to a position with its bight resting on the messenger, and in which position the messenger engages the arm 9 in a manner to prevent the displacement of the hook from the messenger by an upward movement of the hook, unless the upward movement is synchronous with the lateral or definite movement mentioned.
Assuming a messenger to be strung and a cable in place therebeneath the operator grasps the body of the hanger and places it bodily underneath the cable with the arm 8 on one side thereof and the arm 9 on the other, hence readily applicable to existing cables, the hook 10 is then placed over'the messenger as described with the trend of the entire hanger oblique to the trend of the messenger and with the hook l1 beneath and laterally removed from the messenger.
The entire hanger is then rotated over the point of contact between the arm 8 and the messenger to bring the arm 9 and hook 11 to a position above and to one side of the messenger, after which the hook 11 is moved to engage over the messenger in a clownwardly and laterally direction, thereby rotating the hook 10 about the arm 8 to exert a bending strain on the messenger.
By preference the points of cable support 5, 6 and 7 are flattened or made plane so that their tendency to embed and Wear into the jacket of the cable is minimized.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A cable hanger formed from a single piece of spring wire and provided with an elon gated cradle-like and flattened cable supporting seat, so that the weight of the cable may be distributed to different points and the denting of the same prevented, suspending straight arms widely separated and disposed on opposite ends and each side or the cable supporting seat, one of said arms acting as a gripping arm for gripping the lower portion of the messenger wire to which it is applied, said gripping arm projecting outwardly from the messenger at an angle slightly less than a right angle to the axis of the messenger, a suspension hook carried by said gripping arm adapted to grip the messenger on its top surface, the prong of said hook extending over the messenger at an oblique angle and engaging the messenger name to this specification, in'presence of two subscribing witnesses.
