Application filed July 18, 1918.
To all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Cnanmcs I. MINos'r, a citizen of the United States, residin at Evansville, in the county of anderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Priming- Cups, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved priming cup for an internal combustion engine which can be quickly and easily opened and closed and will remain sealed, once it has been closed.
Another object is to provide a priming cup having a cup pin provided with a valve head arranged andconstructed in a novel manner, whereby it will automatically close when the engine startslshould it have been inadvertently left open after the priming of the cylinder.
These objects, and others appearing more fully from the following description, are attained by the provision of a priming cup having a slidable and rotatable pin, devoid of screw threads, and provided with a laterally arranged handle which rides on a horizontally arranged cam on the cup for the purpose of closing, or opening. the cup. Vhen the handle is turned horizontally, its engagement with the cam securely and quickly seals the head of the pin against the outlet of the cup and the valve head is maintained in sealed position until the handle is turned in the opposite direction. If, however, the valve head is inadvertently left open after priming of the cylinder has been etiected, the explosion in the cylinder when the engi'ne is started, immediately closes the' valve head and it remains sealed during the explosion stroke.-

The cup appears at 1 and has ascrewthreaded stenrQ to screw into the cylinder or engine. as usual; there is also a nut 3 integral with the cup.
Extending through the bottom of the cup and the stem 2 is a delivery duct 4 which is flared at its lower end 5 and is smooth throughout its length.
The upper edge of the clip has a generally horizontally disposed cam The pin 7 is smooth and devoid of screwthreads and is freely slidable and r natable in the duct 4 in which it is located. The lower end of the pin is provided with a head 8 tapered at 9 to fit the flared end 5 of the duct to effect a tight closing of the latter. The upper end of the pin is provided with a laterally arranged handle 10, which in the presentinstance is integral therewith, adapted to ride on the cam 6 to seal or open the cup, according to which way the handle is turned.
To allow suitable feed of the gasolene through the duct 4 the pin may he provided with a groove 11 which may be either straight, or curved as shown; or, as shown at 12 in Fig. 4, there may he provided a channel in the wall of the duct; the pin may have a flattened face in lieu of the groove 11.
Having no screw-threaded engagement with the cup, the pin 7 is free to turn and slide in the duct 4 so that the priming cup can he quickly and easily opened or closed. If the pin is inadvertently left open, after priming, the first explosion in the cylinder,
automatically closes the head 8 against the flared end 5 of the duct and seals the cup.
The provision of a rigid, laterally arranged handle such as 10, cooperating with a generally horizontally disposed cam, such as 6, insures tight closing of the valve head 8 regardless of wear of said handle, cam and valve head, and the twisting action exerted on the valve head when the handle is turned insures that the valve head will always tightly fit its seat and be securely held when clpsed.
