Be it known that I, -VERN. E. Brier-men, a
citizen ofsthe United States, residing. at: Perry,in the county of .Wyoming and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Boxes, of which thefollowingis a. specification, reference being ,hadto the accompanying drawings. i
This invention relates to certain improvements in collapsible boxesandhas relation more particularly to a deviceof this general character including a plurality of. hingedly connected sections .orpanels which, when in folded relation, occupy a minimum of. space,
s and it is an object of .theinVention to .pro'
vide adevice .of this general character with novel and nnproved means whereby the sections or-panels maybe maintained in 6X1,
tended or operative relation. a
The invention consists in. the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved-collapsible box wherebymcertain important advantages are attained andathe de:
l vice rendered simpler, l less expensiveand otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as Wlllbfl hereinafter more fully set forth. 7 I
- The novel 1 features of my invention will 7 hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention-may be the better understood, I will nowproceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1-isa v1ew'1n elevation 'of a collapsible box constructed in accordancewith an embodiment of my invention, in extended or operative position; V
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken through my improved box as disclosed in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken through my improved box in folded or collapsed position;
4 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken through my improved box as herein disclosed in extended or operative position; and
Fig. 5 1s a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken through my improved box as' herein disclosed in folded or compacted position.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings B denotes the bottom panel of my 1m- I Specification of fietters Patent. Application filed April s, 1918... Serial 11.6-227345.
;- Patented J ly 8-, 1919.
in form and has its longitudinal marginal portions defined by the upstanding; flanges 1. I Hingedly connected tothe flanges lare the side panels S which are adapted to fold inwardly. It is to be observed that 1 the hinges. .2 are so positioned asto causejthe adjacent edges of the flanges l and the panels S to contact in order to limit the outward swinging movement ofthe. panels S.
E denotes end panels hingedly connected with the bottompanel Band adapted to fold inwardly and upon the inner face of the panel B. The flanges 1 are of a width. in
excess of the thicknessof the panels- E so that when, my improved box is collapsed the end panels E will offer no obstruction to the inward or. folding movement Ofthejside panels S. Thehing'esQ connecting the bot tom panel B and theendpanels .E are so arranged that the upward swinging movement ofthepanels E. is'limited by; contact of the inner edges thereof with the bottom panelBh: V
Each vof the end panels E is. provided with inward guide members 3, alined in a direction transversely of a the bottom panel B and slidably engaged with said guide members 3 are the rods 4 having their outer ends provided with the-hook members 15 engageable with-the eye members 6, extending inwardly from the side panels-S; Coact ingwith the inner end portions ofthe rods 4 is a turnbuckle 7 orthe likewhereby the requisite pull may be imparted to the rods 42 for maintaining the panels S andE in lextended or operative relation and which also permits a ready release of such panels when it is desired'to compact the box.
The outer face of each of the end panels E has its marginalportions defined by the outstanding members or flanges 8 and the uppermost of said flanges or members 8 is provided to one side of its longitudinal center with. an opening '9 extending in a prove as. wh s. pre erab y. r gula i direction substantially parallel to the 'out er face ofthe panel E. Disposed through said.
opening 9 is a shank 10 having its inner portion anchored as at 11 to the panel E- and its opposite end portion extending b eyond the outer margin of the panel E.
Hingedly connected as at 12 with the outer longitudinal margin of the side anels S are the top panels'T, which are ac apted to be swung over and in contact-with the upper or outer marginal portions of the panels S out my invention in practice except as hereand E when the box is extended or in assembled relation and which panels T are adapted to overlie the outer faces of the panels S when the box is folded or compacted. As herein embodied the top panels T are each of a width substantially equal to one-half of the width of the bottom panel B. One of the panels T adjacent its opposite ends is provided with the openings 14 through which the extended portions of the shank 11 is directed when the panel T is in closed position and the second panel T adjacent its opposite ends is provlded with a strap 15 extending beyond the outer or free longitudinal margin thereof and the extended portions of said straps are provided with the openings 16 through which the extended or outer end portions of the shanks 11 are also disposed when both of the panels T are in closed position. As is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the extended portions of the straps 15 overlie the outer face of the second panel T when the panels are in closed position. The nuts 17 are threaded upon the shanks 11 and have clamping engagements upon the straps 15 or more particularly the extended portions thereof whereby the top panels T are effectively and conveniently locked in closed position.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a collapsible box constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying Copies of this patent may be obtained for inafter claimed.
I claim:
1. In combination with a box body having a face open, the outer faces of opposed walls of the body having their free marginal portions defined by outstanding flanges, a cover panel coacting with the open face of the body, said panel being provided with openings adjacent opposite ends thereof, outstanding shanks carried by the body and disposed through the flanges thereof, the inner ends of said shanks being secured to the outer faces of the walls provided with the flanges, the outer end portions of said shanks being insertible through the openings in the cover panel, and clamp members threaded upon the shank and coacting with the cover panel for holding the same in closed position.
. 2; A collapsiblebox comprising a bottom panel," side panels and end panels, foldable one relative to the other, an inwardly directed eye carried by each of the said panels adjacent an end thereof, a rod slidably supported by an end panel and provided with a hook engageable with the eye of a side panel, a second rod in longitudinal alinement with the first named rod and having a hook engageable with the eye of the second side panel, and a member engageable with the inner ends of the rods for imparting pull thereto for holding the end panel and the side panels in extended relation, said member also serving as means whereby the second rod is supported by the first named rod, both of said rods having movement 'in substantially a fixed line of travel.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atfix-my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
