THE COLUMBIA PLANOURAPII co.. WASHINGTON, n. c.
" siding at" 7 this improved V compressible washer [UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER CHRISTIE, OF NEWCASTLE, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA.
I PIERCING-WAND DECANTING DEVICE FOR SHEET-METAL LIQUID-CONTAINERS.
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER CHRISTIE, a subject of" the King of Great Britain, re-
Tlle Junction, Newcastle, in the State ofNew South Wales and Commonwealth of' A ustralia, have invented a new and useful Improved Piercing and Decanting Device for Sheet-Metal 'Liquid- Containers, of which the-following is a specification.
This invention has been especially devised in order to p-rovidean improved piercing and decanting device" for sheet metal containers particularly petrol and the like tins or cans'wh" h will enable a liquid container tobereadily pierced and be provided with a" pouring spout tightly jointed to said container and more or less liquid may be poured as and when desired and which is of cheap construc= tion and simple and eificient lIl'fllllCtlQIl.
Thls 1mproved piercmg and decanting device for sheet metal containers comprises in combination a tube or spout having at or on its forward end a cutter point with a flangerearwardly of said cutter a moreror less forwardly of said flange and adapted to be compressed thereby a spout rearwardly of said flange with or without a plug or stop cock and with or without a filterlngcone therein a base block adapted to lie flat upon one face of the container and a bent spring connecting arcuate link joining the spout member and the base block this link being pivoted to the tube or spout rearwardly of the flange thereon and to the base block so that it will spring hold the spoutmember in place with the flange compressing the washer when the base block is levered or sprung flat to the surface ofthe container wall at right angles to the pierced wall.
And in order that this invention may be readily carried into practical effect 1t Wlll now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 1s a perspective view of the constructlon of piercing and decanting device and Fig. 2 a side elevation thereof Flg. 3 is a perspective view of a modified construction of piercing and decanting device and Fig. 4 a side elevation of part thereof while Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a cutting point.
The tube 6 has a forward cutting point 7 which may be formed by attaching a special cutter point or by sharpening the tube (preferably case-hardened) and placing a Specification of Letters Patent.
through which tube or spout Patented-July 8; 1919.
Application filedlleeember 23, 1913. Serial No. 268,096.
a flange 11 forming an abutment for compressible washer 10 adapted to be squeezed by said flange tightly' against the container walll2' asshown or against any other wall of the container as may 'be' desired. An ordinary plug 13 may be positioned in the tube 6 for controlling the outlet from the discharge en'd of spout and a removable strainer 14: may be fixed in said tube 6 by friction or otherwise. Further an ordinary plugcock or other cut off (not' shown) might be inserted'within or at the end of spout 6. At right angles to the tube 6 and secured thereto is a crosshe'ad or lugs forming pivots 15' for the outer ends of quadrant or arcuate links-16 the inner ends of' which are pivoted on lugs 17 about'medially of base block 18 the nearer end 19 of which is chain: fered orar'euate to its bottom so as to take against the container bead or-ridge 20 and has a bite or slot 23 therein. The other end is formed as a knob or handle21 and has a spigot punch 22 thereon.
The end 19 of the base block 18 forms part of a circle or has rounded corners to suit the device to the rounded corner of a container or to any convenient part of a circular container.
In use to attach the spout or tube to the corner of a square container as a petrol tin the improved piercing and decanting device for sheet metal containers is positioned by facing the cutter point 7 on to the side wall12 of the container near one end say the top 21. The base block 18 is at the same time placed at right angles on said top 24: with its end 19 held inwardly of bead 20 and then the knob 21 being pressed downwardly flat on the container top the cutter and tube pass through the side wall 12 and the flange 11 is caused to compress the washer 10 against said wall. On the inner end of the block 18 (in this case the knob 21) passing downwardly on to the container top said block 18 will with a spring lock and tighten the flange jointing 101l and hold the decanting device in position so that the contents of thecontainer or parts thereof may be decanted by the user as and when desired. The full contents of the container may be withdrawn through the drain hole 9 by suitable tilting or canting of the container.
A If so desired the container may be pierced and tube attached through the top wall of the container by so first bending the bead or ridge 20 of container outwardly slightly by means of the slot or bite 23 so that a stop along the side wall edge for the lever or base block 18 is provided and when so positioned the tube and base block will be reversed to that (shown on the drawing) where the containeris pierced and decanter tube attached to the side wall.
What I claim is 1. An improved piercing and decanting device forsheet metal containers comprising a tube provided with a forward cutter point, an abutment flange rearwardly of the cutter point, a base block adapted to abut a ridge on a wall of the container and position on said wall at right angles to another wall of said container being pierced by said cutter point and resiliently connected to said tube substantially as herein described and explained.
2. An improved piercing and decanting device for sheet metal liquid containers ineluding in combination, a piercing tube, an abutment flange 0n the tube, a compressible washer surrounding the tube and arranged against the flange, a base block, and means for'resiliently connecting the tube to the block.
- 3. An improved piercing and decanting device for sheet metal containers compriscopies ing a tube provided with a cutter point, an abutment flange rearwardly of the cutter point, a base block, and resilient links arranged on opposite sides of the tube and block and having their opposite ends pivotally connected respectively to the tube and block.
4t. An improved piercing and decanting device for sheet metal liquid containers comprising a tube provided with a cutter point at one end and also provided with adrain opening, an annular exterior abutment flange carried by the tube rearwardly of the point,
a compressible washer arranged about the tube and against the flange, a cross head carried by the tube, a base block having the forward edge designed to engage a portion of the container the container at right angles to the wall ofthe container being pierced by the tube,
opposed lugs carried by the block and spring links having their respective ends pivotally engaged about the cross head and lugs,
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. V
