Description

STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. C. FUNSTON, OF WEST PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SCAFFOLD.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,086, dated June 19, 1855.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ABRAM C. FUNsToN,
i of Vest Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Soaffolds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a front view of a scaffold Constructed after my invention. Fig. 2, is an end view of the same, the braces not being shown.
Similar letters of reference in each of the two figures indicate corresponding parts.
It consists in having the back upright of one or all of the sections or frames forming this particular scaffold made in two parts and united together by a set screw which plays in a slot cut in the lower portion of said upright or uprights so that it or they shall not interfere with the scaffold being raised on sides of buildings having stoops or porticoes.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to dca sill B, the sill serving for it to rest upon and the rounds for supporting staging or platforms C, C, C, C, as shown in the drawlng. f
To render the scaffold convenient for use on buildings having porticoes, stoops or steps I make the back upright of one or all of the sections in two parts as at G, Fig. 2, and provide a slot in the lower part and couple said part to the upper part by straps e', e', and secure it firmly by a set screw H, so that by simply loosening the said set .screw which plays in the slot in the lower part, it may be elevated and made to rest upon the steps. The slot in the lower part allows for this elevation. The lower por'- tion of the front timbers of the sections may stand oblique instead of vertical so as to be out of the way of the steps, &c., as shown in Fig. 2.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
lNaking the back upright of one or all of the sections or frames forming this particw lar scaffold in two parts and providing the lower part with a slot and uniting it to the upper part by a set screw'which plays in the slot' and allows of the lower part being raised substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
