UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. JACOB M. ISENBERG, OF HUNTINGDON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND S. H. ISENBERG, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHIFFLETREES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,854, dated August 27, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Horse-Detaching Apparatus, invented by J A- COB M. ISENBERG, of Huntingdon, in the county of Huntingdon and State of Pennsyl- Vania.
My invention consists of a peculiar arrangement of devices with sliding catch-bolts on D of said whiffletree, which are bent up in front of the bolts, and springs E are arranged with v the said bolts, so that they are constantly pushed out against said ends D. They receive the traces between the ends D and the outermost bearings B. Inside of the inner bearings B the said bolts are connected at G to the elbow-levers F, which are pivo..d at I to the arms H, projecting rearward from the whiffletree, and near the middle of the whiffletree said levers are connected to the T-shaped bar K by links L, for being simultaneously pulled backward by a strap or cord extending from the eye M through or over any suitable guides to a place in easy reach of the driver, so that the catch bolts may be retracted and the traces cast off thereby to let the horse go when he becomes unmanageable. The pins N are attached to the catch-bolts to facilitate the pushing of them back by hand for connecting and disconnecting the traces.
I am aware of the use of the sliding springbolts and angled levers, and certain devices for operating them, in combination with whiffletrees, and lay no claim to such mechanism broadly.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The T-shaped connecting-piece K, links L L, angled levers F F having their fulcrums in the ends of the arms H H, the sliding bolts A A provided with pins N, the springs E, and lugs or bearings B, all arranged in connection with the whiffletree-bar, as shown and described, to operate as specified.
