UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE. I
I JOSEPH G. R. OHAlR-A, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOB TO EDUGATIGNAL MOTIOI"? PICTURE MACHINE AND OF MISSOURI.
FILM COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION MOTION-PICTURE-PROJBCTING MACHINE.
Be it known that I, JOSEPH G. R. OHARA, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain'new and useful Improvement in Motion e Picture Projecting Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, andexact description, such as will enings, forming-part of this specification, in
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my improved motion picture pro ecting machine.
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the the shat-band of 5 v p p p I ,of a -spring 23, the miter gear 20 is in fricmechanism connected with thewinding reel. I
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the; other end of thedriving shaft for the winde mg reel.
Fig. l is a horizontal cross section through the housing and showing means of mounting thehousing in the gulde.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in motion picture projecting machines, the object being to simplify r the ree1'6 mounted on the housing 1 and the construction of such machines and to,
positively drive the winding shaft in all positions of the machine.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the-base, 2v the lamp housing or casing m'ounted there- 3 is the lens tube fixedv to the base 1, as is also the lamp housing 2. 4 is the housing containing the mechanism operated by the handle 5 for unwinding thefilm from winding said film onto winding reel7. The housing 4 is mounted in suitable guides on the base 1 and capable of vertical movement relative thereto, said housing having a rack 8 with which meshes a pinion SJ-arranged 1- cal-1y referred or' disclosed, but compreon the shaft mounted in the hearings on the base 1.
to the basel. The detent 11 .has a thumb iece'll connected thereto and arranged ad-Q acent the handle 10 which handle 10 is conjoined to the pinion 9, whereby when the handle is adjusted .in its rotative positions,
Specificati'on of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 8, 1918. Serial No. 239,024. I
As the winding reel 7is operated. from the mechanism contained within the hous ing or casing 4:, I provide a shaft13 oper ated by the mechanism in casing 4 and ex .tending through a suitable packed joint in the wall of the'casing at, said shaft 13 haw able others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same,'refe r-.- ence being had to the accompanying. draw-- which latter has a collar 17 connected by a universal joint to a shaft 18, the latter carrymg a miter gear 19 meshing with a cor responding gear 20 loosely mounted on shaft '21. Thisshaft 21. is arranged in a bracket 22 secured'to the base frame and by means tional engagement with the collar 24 pinned to the shaft 21. Thus the winding shaft 21 may be frictionally driven, its speed of .course being predetermined so as to conipensate forrthe'difi'erence in the diameter of the film as it is unwound from the feedii'ig reel Gto the winding reel 7.
Whenever it isdesiredto "frame a pic ture, the handle 10 is adjusted to the proper position and upon the release of finger piece 11 is locked in such a position. The.
turning of the handle 5 will wind the film onto the receiving reel 7 and by virtue of the universal joint connected to the shaft 16 and the slot and pin connection permit ting thelongitudinal movement of said shaft in the sleeve 15, the-shaft 16 and conse I ama'ware that'the motion picture .projecting machineillustrated' and described is susceptible of variousalterations, changes, 'modifications and adaptations not specifi quently the windingreel 7 will be driven I .at the same predetermined speed in any ad -justed pos tion of the gear casing.
bended, nevertheless,. within the .spiritof I the invention andfthescope 30f the appended claims. I ,clann:
v 1. In a motion picture projecting m hine; I
the combination of abase,- a gear-housing reel driven by said shaft, said shaft having universaljoints and telescopic connection whereby the receiving reel may be driven at a predetermined speed in any position of the gear housing.
2. In a motion picture projecting machine, a base, a shaft journaled in a part of said base a receiving reel carried by said shaft, a gear housing arranged for vertical movement upon the base, a driving shaft connected with the gearing within said housing and extending to the shaft carrying the receiving reel, said driving shaft being eX- tensible and provided with universal joints, a rack carried by the gear housing, a pinion journaled on the base and cooperating with said rack, a hand lever for actuating said pinion, and means for locking said hand lever in its adjusted positions.
Intestimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature this 3rd day of June, 1918.
JOSEPH s. R. OHARA
