.To all whom it may concern.:
Be lit known that l, EDWARD lnMoic-D, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lfmprovements in Bottle-Labeling Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for applying labels to bottles and the objects of the invention are to provide a simple, economical and effective bottle labeling machine, capable of labeling a very large number of bottles at a uniform rate of speed without interruption. Further objects of the invention are to improve upon the bottle conveyer means so that the bottlesv are delivered from the machine in an upright position. Further objects of the invention are to improve upon the construc tion, movement, and operation of the pickers for removing the labels from the label boxes. Further objects ofthe invention are to improve upon the label boxes and their followers, so that several thousand labels can be held in each label box so as to permit the withdrawal of the labels one at a time, by the pickers without interruption. Further objects of the invention are to improve upon the presser fingers and their operation. Further objects of the invention will hereinafter appear, and while the invention is to be described with particular reference to the l details of construction, the same is not to be considered as limited thereto, as many changes can be made and still fall within the scope of the invention set forth in the following claims.

Referring to the drawing, 1 and 2 desig nate suitable side standards comprising the frame of the machine upon which the different operating parts are mounted. Suitably journaled in the side standards are front and rear shafts, 3 and 4, to each of which is secured two sprocket wheels, 5 and 6, positioned against the inner faces of the side standards. lThe sprocket wheels, 5 and 6, are each respectively connected by means of suitable sprocket chains 7, one on each side of the machine, the same being connected at intervals to the ends of transverse lag-bars 8, in the present instance six in number. Each lag-bar is provided with a plurality of conveyer-fingers 9, secu-red thereto in pairs; in the present instance each lag-bar has six pairs of conveyenfingers, spaced at intervals transversely across the machine.
Suitably secured to the side standards at the front end of the machine is a receivingn tray l0, which has a series of traypartitions 11, secured thereto between the longitudinal rows of conveyer-ingers. rfhe adjacent sides of the outer ends of adjacent tray-partitions are. suitably shaped to hold. in an inclined position, a bottle placed therebetween. lln order to keep the bottle centered, between the adjacent tray-partitions, suitably grooved rests l2, each secured at one end to the receiving-tray are provided therebetween, the longitudinal rows of conveyor-fingers in each instance being arranged to pass on either side of the grooved rest to engage the bottle. In the present instance the receiving-tray is arranged to hold at any one time six bottles, one for each of the longitudinal rows of conveyer-tingers;

as each transverse row of conveyer-fingers moves forward, in the operation of the machine, six more bottlescan be inserted in the receiving-tray to be engaged by the next succeeding transverse row of conveyer-fingers and so on continuously.
Between each longitudinal row of conveyer-ingers is arranged a suitable slide or track 13, upon which the bottom of the bot-` tle slides, on its passage through the machine, as the same is moved forward by the conveyer-lingers. Each track 13 is secured at one end to a cross-bar 14, and at the other end to a discharging-tray 15. In the present instance each track 13 is bent, as shown in Fig. 6, so as to present a curved guide for the bottle from the time it leaves' the receiving-tray, until it assumes a vertical position.
After the bottle assumes a vertical position the slide continues for a certain distance to remain horizontal while the bottle is being labeled, the conveyer-fingers continuing to move the bottle along the slide 13, until it reaches the discharging-tray 15, moving ahead any bottle that may have preceded yit on the discharging-tray. In-order to pre` vent the bottle being turned over as it is moved on to the dischargingtray by the angular downward movement of the conveyer- Y In the present instance the discharging.
tray 15, has a series of discharging-partitions 16, secured thereto between the longitudinal rows of conveyer-fingers. The inner end of each of the discharging-partitions is preferably grooved so as to removably hold one end of an intermediate partition 17. The other ends of the intermediate-partitions are removably held in suitable slotted pins 18, secured to wiper-uprights 19, the upper ends of which are secured to a cross bar 20, se-
cured to the'side standards. The lower end y-of each of the wiper-uprights is secured to one end of a bolt 21, the other end of which is secured to an angle-bar 22. The discharg-` ing-partitions together with their respective intermediate-partitions,-between the longitudinal rows of conveyer fingers on each side of the slides, keeps the bottles in alinement on their passage through the machine and prevents them from movmg sidewise off their respective slides.
' In order to keep the conveyer-fingers in a vertical position, after they have taken a bottle from the receiving-tray, and in order to keep the sprocket-chains 7 from sagging downward, each lag-bar 8 is provided with a shoe 23, intermediate of its length which is adapted to engage a guide plate 24, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, mounted on the shaft 3, at one end and upon a shaft 25, at the other end.
The upper part of the side standards are each provided, adjacent their front ends, with an inclined slot 26, which is nearly vertical, that constitutes a runway for one side of a transversely positioned picker frame 27, provided with suitable cross-heads 28, that slidably engage the slots 26.
In the present instance the picker-frame 27, is pivoted at each end to one of the crossheads 28, by means of a suitable bearing-pin 29, which is mounted in each instance, upon a short 'upright member 30. one of which is secured to each end of the picker-frame.
The picker-frame 27 is provided withl a plurality of downwardly extending pickersupports 31, secured at their upper ends to the picker-frame, between the longitudinal rows of conveyerfingers. The adjacent sides of adjacent picker-supports are each provided with a picker 32, hinged thereto, in each instance, by means of a suitable pivot pin 33, mounted in suitable bearing lugs 34 and 35, secured respectively to the pickersupport and picker, a suitable spring 36, being mounted in each instance, on the pivot pin 33, to keep the picker in closed position against the face of its respective picker-support.
Each cross-head 28, of the picker-frame is pivotally connected to one end of an adjusting link 37, the other end of which is secured to the upper end of a reciprocating link 38. The lower end of the reciprocating links are secured respectively to the outer ends of levers 39 and 40, which are secured to the opposite ends of a shaft 41, the inner ends of the levers 39 and 40, being` connected by means of a weight-bar 42, secured thereto which acts to counter-balance the weight of the picker-frame.
The picker-frame 27 carrying the pickers 32 is reciprocated up and down and controlled in its movements by means of two cams 43 and 44, secured to one side of a large gear 45, mounted on the shaft 4. The cam 44 is arranged to engage a roller 46, mount ed on a pin 47, to which is also mounted thc ends of two links 48 and 49, the other ends of the links 48 and 49, being mounted respectively on thc end of a shaftA 50, and the end of the shaft 41. The cam 43 is arranged to engage a roller 51 mounted on a pin 52, secured to one end of a link 53, the other end of which is loosely mounted on the end of the shaft 41. The upper end of the link 53, is secured to one end of a rod 54, the other end of which passes throughan eyelib neuesten bolt 55, secured to the upper end ot the link 49. 'llhe free end of the rod 54, is provided with a spring 56, which acts to keep the rollers 51 and L46, in engagement with their respective cams 43 and 44.
When in the operation ot' the machine the picker-frame 27, the action ot the cams 48 and 44, reaches' its upper limit, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and l6, a roller 57, secured to one oi the upright members 30.. is arranged to engage the slotted end of a short lever 58, secured to a Shaft 59, having,r at its outer end a short lever 60. rllhe outer end of the lever 60` is provided with a pin 6l, which engages a right angle slot 6:2, in one end of a lever 68, the other end oit which is pivoted to one end of a bell crank lever 64, looselv mounted on one end et the shaft 25. The other end of the bell crank lever 64, is provided with a roller-65, which engages a cam slot 66, in a cam67, which acts, when the roller 57 enters the slotted end of the lever 58, to force the same outward, thereby swinging the picker-frame 27 about the bearing-pins 29, to torce the pickers 82 against their respective label boxes 68 and 69. The cross-heads 28 are each provided with a stud 70, having a spring 71, which acts together with a spring 72, o-ne end of which is secured to the extended end of the lever 58, and theI other end to a stud 73, secured to the trame, to return the piekertrame to the position shown in Fig. 6. The lever 58 is provided With an extension 74, which loosely engages a bolt 75, which acts to limit the outward movement otl the slotted end of the lever 58.
When in the operation ot' the machine it is not desired to torce the picker-frame inward against the label boxes. a bell-crank lever 76, pivoted to the end oi the shaft 59, is operated, as shown in Fig. 3. to permit a spring 77, one end of which is secured to the lever 63, and the other end to the frame, to draw the lever into inoperative position in the slot 62, which permits the lever 68 to be moved up and down by the ac tion of the cam groove 66,4Without operating the picker-frame to force the same into engagement with the label boxes. y
lin the present instance it will he seen that the label boxes 68 and 69, are held in a suit.- able label-frame 78. there being one set of label boxes for each set of pickers. rllhe label-'frame 78 is set so as to hold the end labels in the label boxes, on a radial plane which passes through the pivot-pins 29, so as to present the end labels to the pickers as the pickers are -forced inward about the pivot-pins 29` as before described.
In the present instance the label boxes 68 are arranged to hold neck labels 79. and the label boxes 69, to hold body labels 80. each set of label boxes being made ot' suflicient length to hold several thousand. labels.

The lever 100 is connected midway ot its length to one end of a rod 101, the other end of which is connected to an adjusting link 102, se-

From the above description it will be seen that when in the operation of the machine the picker-frame has reached its upper position and just preceding the time the cam groove 66 acts to force the pickers inward against their respective label boxes, the roller 99 is riding on a low portion 10,4, oi' the cam 98, so' as to -relieve the pressure of the friction plungers .92, against their respective rocker-arms 86, which permits the weight ot' the rocker-arms to bear against their respective piles of labels. The roller 99 rides on the low portion 104, of the cam 98, while the cam Kfroove 66 acts to force the pickers inward against their respective label boxes which acts to force the labels backward against the weight ot' the rocker* arms raising them slightly. ln the further operation of the machine and before the. cam groove 66,l operates to withdraw the pickers from in contact with their respective label boxes, the roller 99 rides up on a high ortion 105 of the cam 66 so as to torce all o the friction plungers 99, into engagement with their respective rocker-armsholdingjthe same in their raised position. The rocker-arms are held. in. raised position by -the cam 98 and thereby prevented from exerting any pressure upon their respective piles of labels until the cam groove 66 has acted to withdraw the pickers from in contact with their respective label boxes. The actionof the cam 98, to relieve the pressure on the piles of labels permits of the pickers which have previously been coated with glue each to Withdraw a single label from each labe1\box without tearing or missing a label. i In the further operatlon of the machine, after the pickers have removed their respective labels from the label boxes, the roller 99 enters another low portion 106 on the cam 98, which again relieves the pressure of the friction plungers 92, against their respective rocker-arms permitting them to move down- Ward to force the labels together in the label boxes. After the labels are forced together in the label boxes the roller 99 in the further operation of the machine rises on a high part 107, of the cam 98, to lock the rocker-arms in their lower position, until just previous to the time the cam groove 66 acts to force the pickers inward against the label boxes, when the roller 99 enters the low portion 104, of the cam 98, to unlock the rocker-arms as before described.
When in the operation of the machine the picker-frame 27-is moved upward and with it the pickers 32, as before described, the face of the pickers are arranged to be engaged by a paste roller 108, which extends transversely across the machine. The ends of the paste roller extend through suitable slots in the frame, the same being rotatably supported at one end, to one end of a lever 109, the other end of which is pivoted to the frame. The other end of the paste roller is rotatably mounted on one end of a bell crank lever 110, also pivoted to the frame, the other end of the bell crank lever 110 being pivoted to one end of a rod 111, to the other end of which is mounted a roller 112, which which the cam 114 acts to Withdraw the paste roller so that it will not engage the pickers on their downward movement.`
When in the operation of the machine the paste roller 108 is moved inward, as before described, it is arranged to engage a paste supply roller 115, the ends of which are mounted in a paste tank 116, secured to the frame. One end of the paste supply roller extends out through one side of the frame and has adjustably secured thereto a remov:
able sprocket 117, which engages a sprocket chain 118, which also engages an idler sprocket 119, and a driving sprocket 120, secured to one end of the shaft 3. The idler sprocket 119, is suitably mounted on an adjusting arm 121, which permits of the adjustment of the sprocket chain 118 to fit various sized sprockets 117, which can be substituted to drive the paste supply roller at different speeds. The paste supply roller 115 is provided at one end with a gear 122, which is arranged to mesh with a similar gear, not shown, secured to the adjacent end of the paste roller 108, when in the operation of the machine the paste roller is forced inward out of the path of the pickers, by the action of the cam 114.
The sprocket 117 has a flanged portion adapted to engage a lever 123, pivoted at one end to the frame and locked at the other end, which can be operated to remove the sprocket 117, so that the paste tank 116, with `the paste supply roller can be removed from the machine.
When in the operation of the machine the pickers 37 move downward, each with a neck and body label adhering thereto, into the path of movement of their respective bottles carried by their respective oonveyerfingers, each set of labels as the come in contact with their respective bott es are arranged to be engaged by oneof a set of presser-lingers 124 and 125, mounted on a presser-rod 126. The presser-rods are secured at their upper ends to a presser-carriage 127, the ends of which are slidably mounted on rollers 128 supported in suitable guideways 129 in the frame.
The presser carriage 127 is secured at one end to one end of a universally pivoted arm 130, the other end of which is pivoted to one end of a lever 131, the other end of which is mounted on the shaft 25. The lever 131 has secured thereto intermediate ofits length an arm 132, having at its outer end a roller 133, which engages a cam groove 134, formed on the back of the' gear 45,
which acts to move the presser carriage back and forth in a longitudinal direction along the guideways 129. The other end of the presser carriage is also secured to one end of a universally pivoted arm 135, the other end of which is pivoted to one end of a lever 136, the other end of which is mounted on the shaft 25.
The presser carriage 127 near the end of its backward longitudinal movement is arranged to be moved transversely, to bring the presser fingers out of the path of movement of the bottles, this movement is accomplished by means of a roller 137, secured to the bottom of the presser carriage, which is arranged to engage a two way switch 188 secured to the underside of the rearward en of one of the guideways 129. The switch 138 incassa is provided with a dog 139, pivoted near its center and pointed at both ends. rihe inner end of the dog 139, is provided with a pin 140, which projects through a slot 141, in the bottom of the switch, to which is secured a spring 142, also secured to a small projection 143 on the switch. The spring 142 acts to keep the inner end of the dog`139 drawn inward as shown in F ig. 8, so that the presser carriage will not move transversely on its forward movement until the' roller 137 engages the outwardly curved portion 144 of the switch, which acts to move the presser carriage at the end of its forward movement outward to disengage the presser fingers from their respective bottles. On the backward movement of the presser carriage the roller 137 passes on the other side of the dog 139, and engages the inwardly curved portion 145 of the switch, which acts to move the presser carriage inward to bring the presser' fingers again into position to engage the bottles.
By referring to Figs. 6 and 7, it will be seen that the presser fingers 124 and 125 are normally pressed outward by means of suitable coiled springs 146, which are compressed when the presser carriage forces the presser fingers into engagement with the bottles to hold the labels thereon. As the bottles move forward after the labels thereon have been engaged by the presser fingers, the c am groove 134 acts to move the presser carriage a little faster than the speed of the bottles, so as to slightly relieve the tension on the presser finger springs 146, which pressure is nally entirely relieved by the time the switch 138 acts to force the presser fingers out of the way of the bottles.
The Wiper-uprights 19 are each provided with neck and body label wipers 147 and 148, preferably made of rubber, which act to wipe the labels on the bottles after they have been engaged by the presser fingers.
l'n the present -instance the machine. is driven by means of an electric motor 149, mounted on top of the frame, which is com nected by means of a belt 150, with a pulle \Y 151, suitably supported on thel frame and provided with a small gear 152, which en gages a gear 153, having secured thereto a gear 154, which engages the large gea-r 45. The large gear 45, has secured Athereto a sprocket wheel 155, which is connected to a sprocket wheel 156, mounted on the shaft 3,. by means of a sprocket chain 157. The pulley 15,1 isshifted into and out of operation by means of a suitable lever 158, which is connected to a shift bar 159, which runs across the face of the machine.
rlFhe operation ot' the machine is as fol lows: Bottles to be labeled, in the present instance six in number, are placed in the receiving tray 10, from which they are almost immediately removed by tne conveyer fingers 9. rllhe picker frame acting in the meantime to move the pickers 32 upward past the paste roller 108, which is forced outward to coat the pickers with a coating of glue. The picker frame then moves to its uppermost position, in which position the pickers are forced inward to engage the label boxes ($8 and 69 extracting therefrom in each instance a neck label 79 and a body label 80. The picker frame together with the pickers each carrying neck and body labels then moves downward, the paste roller 108 in the meantime having been withdrawn, to its loW- ermost position, holding each set of labels across the path of movement of its respective bottle. The bottles in the meantime having continued to move forward engage the labels, and as they do the presser carrlagel forces the presser fingers each into engagement with the set of labels for its respective bottle. The bottles continue .to move forward together with the presser fingers gripping the labels past the neck and body wipers 147 and 148, which act in each instance to press the labels on the bottle, the pickers in the meantime having moved upward out of the way. After the bottles have passed the wipers the presser carriage moves the presser fingers transversely out of the path of movement of the bottles which continue to slide along their respective slides 13, as before described, until they reach the discharging tray 15.
As soon as one set of six bottles has been placed upon the receiving tray and has moved out of the way which is almost immediately, another set of six bottles is placed in the receiving tray, the different parts of the machine operating as before described, to continually label the bottles as theypass continuously through the machine.
That I claim is:
1. A labeling machine comprising a receiving tray arranged to hold the article to be labeled in a horizontal position, a discharging tray arranged to receive the labeled article in an upright position, a slide conneeting said receiving tray, with said discharging tray, said slide being curved upward to a horizontal position adjacent said receiving tray, said slide sloping upward from a horizontal position adjacent said discharging tray. a conveyer for moving the article to be labeled from the receiving tray along the curved portion of said slide 'to an upright position in which position it remains while the conveyer moves it. along the horizontal portion of said guide and the upward slope thereof` to the discharging tray. and labeling means operated in definite relation to the eonvever to apply labels to the articles in the course of their movement along the slide.
A labeling machine comprising a receiving tray arranged to hold the articles to be labeled in a horizontal position, a discharging tray arranged to receive the labeled article in 'an upright position, a slide connecting said receiving tray with said discharging tray, a continuously driven endless conveyer arranged to move the article to be labeled along said slide from the receiving tray to the discharging tray, said slide being arranged to extend upward adjacent the discharging tray to prevent the labeled article being overturned as it is moved to the discharging tray, and labeling means operated in definite relation to the conveyer to apply labels to the articles in the course of their movement along the slide.
3. A labeling machine comprising a receiving tray arranged to hold the artlcle to be labeled in a horizontal position, a discharging tray arranged to receive the labeled article in an upright position. a slide connecting said receiving tray with said discharging tray, a continuously driven endless conveyer arranged to move the article to be labeled along said slide from the receiving tray to the discharging tray, said slide being arranged to extend upward, as the conveyer moves downward, out of engagement with the labeled article to prevent the labeled article being overturned, as it is released from engagement with the conveyer, and labeling means operated in definite relation to the conveyer to apply labels to the articles in the course of their movement along the slide.
4. A labeling machine comprising a receiving tray arranged to hold a plurality of articles to be labeled in a horizontal position, a discharging tray arranged to receive the labeled articles in an upright position, slides connecting said receiving tray with said discharging tray, one for each article to be labeled, a continuously driven endless conveyer arranged to move the articles to be labeled along said slides from the receiving tray to the discharging tray, a plurality of partitions arranged between said slides to keep the articles to be labeled in position on said slides, and labeling means operated in definite relation to the conveyer to apply labels to the articles in `the course of their movement along the slide.
5. A labeling machine comprising in combination, a conveyer for moving articles to be labeled through the machine, a picker frame provided with a plurality of pickers, a plurality of label boxes, means for reciprocating said picker frame, means for oscillating said picker frame, to force said pickers into engagement with said label boxes to remove labels therefrom, and means for applying to the articles, labels carried by said pickers.
6. A labeling machine comprising in combination, a conveyer for moving articles to be labeled through the machine past a point Where labels are applied, a picker frame provided with a plurality of pickers, means for reciprocating said picker frame up and down, a plurality of label boxes situated near the upper limit of movement of said picker frame, means .for oscillating said picker frame to force said pickers into engagement with said label boxes, to remove labels therefrom at the upper limit of movement of said picker frame, and means for applying to the articles, labels carried by said pickers.
7. A labeling machine comprising in combination, a conveyer for moving articles to be labeled through the machine past a point where labels are applied, a reciprocating and oscillating picker frame provided with a plurality of pickers, a plurality of label boxes, means for reciprocating `said picker frame up and down, means for oscillating said picker frame on its upward movement, to force said pickers into engagement With said label boxes to remove labels therefrom, and means for applying to the articles, labels carried by said pickers.
8. A labeling machine comprising in combination, a receiving tray and a delivery tray, a conveyer for moving articles to be labeled through the machine from the receiving tray to the delivery tray, a picker frame provided with pickers, a plurality of label boxes, arranged to be engaged by said pickers, Weighted means arranged to bear upon the labels in said label boxes, means for locking said Weighted means when the labels have been pushed inward by the pickers, to relieve the pressure of the Weighted means on the labels, While the end labels are being Withdrawn by the pickers, and means for applying to the articles, labels carried by said pickers.
9. A labeling machine comprising in combination, a receiving tray and a delivery tray, a Iconveyer for moving articles to be labeled through the machine from the receiving tray to the delivery tray, a picker frame provided with pickers, a plurality of label boxes arranged to be engaged by said pickers, Weighted means arranged to bear upon the labels in said label boxes, means for locking said weighted means, when the labels have been pushed inward by the pickers, to relieve the pressure ofthe weighted means on the labels While the end labelsare being Withdrawn by the pickers, means for unlocking said Weighted means after the end labels have been withdrawn by the pickers to permit the pressure of the weighted means to force the labels together,l and means for applying to the articles, labels carried by said pickers.
10. A labeling machine ycomprising in combination, a receiving tray and a delivery tray, a conveyer for moving articles to be labeled through the machine from the receivmg tray to the delivery tray past a ieoaaeo point where labels are applied, a picker .frame provided with pickers, a plurality or' label boxes arranged to be engaged by saidpickers, weighted means arranged to bear upon the labels in said label boxes, means for locking said lweighted means when the labels have been pushed inward by the pickers, to relieve the pressure of the weighted means on the labels while the end labels are being withdrawn by the pickers, means for unlocking said weighted means after the end labels have been withdrawn by the pickers to permit the pressure of the weighted means to force the labels together, means for locking said weighted means after the labels have been forced together, and means for applying to the articles, labels carried by said pickers.
11. A labeling machine comprising in combination, a receiving tray and a delivery tray, a conveyer for moving articles to be labeled through the machine from the receiving tray to the delivery tray past a point where labels are applied, a picker frame provided with pickers, a plurality of label boxes arranged to be engaged by said pickers, weighted means arranged to bear upon the labels in said label boxes, means for locking said weighted means when the labels have been pushed inward by the pickers, to relieve the pressure of the weighted meansl on the labels While the end labels are being withdrawn by the pickers, means for unlocking said weighted means after the end labels have been withdrawn by the pickers to permit the pressure of the yweighted means to force the labels together, means for locking said ,weighted means after the labels have been forced together, means for unlocking said-weighted means just previous to the time the-,end labels are engaged by the pick* ers, and means for applying to the articles, labels carried by said pickers.

A labeling machine comprising in combination, a receivingtray and a delivery tray, a conveyer for moving articles to be labeled through the machine from the receiving tray to the delivery tray past a point Where labels are applied, a picker frame provided with pickers, a plurality of label boxes arranged to be engaged by said pickers, a pivotally mounted rocker arm arranged to bear upon the labels in said label boxes, means for locking said rocker arm, when the labels have been pushed inward by the pick; ers to relieve the pressure of the rocker arm on the labels while the end labels are being withdrawn by the pickers, and means for applying to the articles, labels carried by said pickers. y e

A labeling machine comprising in combination, a receiving tray and a delivery tray, a conveyer Jfor moving articles to be labeled through the machine from the receiving tray to the delivery tray past a point where labels are applied, a picker frame provided with pickers, a plurality of label boxes arranged to be engaged by said pickers, al pivotally mounted rocker arm arranged to bear upon the labels in said label boxes, means for locking said rocker arm, when the labels have been pushed inward by the pickers, to relieve the pressure of the rocker arm on the labejls while the end labels are being withdrawn `by the pickers, means for unlocking said rocker arm, after the end labels have been withdrawn-by the pickers, to peri boxes, means for locking said rocker arm,
when the labels have been pushed inward by the pickers, to relieve the pressure of the roekelarm on the labels while the end labels are being withdrawn by the pickers, means for unlocking said rocker arm, after the end labels have been withdrawn by the pickers, to permit of the pressure of the rocker-arm to force the labels together, means for locking said rocker arm after the labels have been forced together, and means for applying to the articles, labels carried by said pickers.
15. A labeling machine comprising in combination, a receiving tray and a delivery tray, a `conveyer for moving articles to be labeled through the machine from the re- (eiving tray to the delivery tray past a point where labels are applied, a picker frame provided with pickers, a plurality of label boxes arranged to be engaged by said pickers, a pivotally mounted rocker arm arranged to bear upon the labels in said label boxes, means for locking said rocker arm, when the labels have been pushed inward by the pickers, to relieve the pressure of 'the rocker arm on the labels while the end labels are being withdrawn by the pickers, means for unlocking said rocker arm, after the end labels have been withdrawn by the pickers, to permit the pressure of therocker arm to fol-re Ithe labels together, means for locking said rocker arm after the labels have been forced together, means for unlocking said rocker arm just previous to the time the end labels are engaged by the pickers, and means for applying to the articles, labels carried by said pickers.
16. A labeling machine comprising in con'lbmation, a receiving tray and a delivery tray, Ia conveyor for moving articles to be labeled through the machine from thereceiving tray to the delivery tray past a point where labels are applied, a picker frame providedl with a plurality of sets of pickers, a plurality of sets of label boxes, a plurality of pivotally mounted rocker arms, one for each set of label boxes, each arranged to bear upon the labels in their respective label boxes, means for locking all of said rocker arms when the labels in the label boxes have been pushed inward by their respective pickers, to' relieve the pressure of the rocker arms on their respective labels while the end labels are being withdrawn by the pickers, and means for applying to the articles, labels carried by said pickers.
17. A labeling machine comprising in combination, a receiving tray and a delivery tray, a conveyer for moving articles to be labeled through the machine from the receiving tray to the delivery tray past a point where labels are applied, a plcker frame provided with a plurality of sets of pickers, a plurality of sets of label boxes, a plurality of pivotally mounted rocker arms, one for each set of label boxes, each arranged to bear upon the labels in their respective label boxes, and means for locking all of said rocker arms when the labels in the label boxes have been pushed inward by their respective pickers, to relieve the pressure of the rocker arms on their respective labels while the end labels are being withdrawn by the pickers, means for unlocking all of said rocker arms after the end labels have been withdrawn by the pickers to permit the pressure of the rocker arms to force their respective labels together, and means for applying to the articles, labels carried by said pickers.
18. A labeling machine comprising in combination, a receivingtray and a delivery tray, aconveyer Jfor moving articles to be .labeled through the machine from the receiving tray to the delivery tray past a point where labels are applied', a icker frame provided with a plurality ot sets of pickers, a plurality of sets of label boxes, a plurality of pivotally mounted rocker arms, one for each set of label boxes, each arranged to bear upon the labels in their respective label boxes, and means for locking all of said rocker arms when the labels in the label boxes have been pushed inward by their respective pickers, to relieve the pressure of the rockerarms on their respective labels while the end labels are being withdrawn by the pickers, means for unlocking all of said rocker arms after the end labels have been withdrawn by the pickers, to permit the pressure ofthe rocker arms to force their respective labels together, means for locking said rcker arms after the labels have been forced together, and means for applying to the articles, labels .carried by said pickers.
19. A labeling machine comprising in combination, a receiving tray-and a delivery tray, a conveyer for moyiug larticles to be labeled through the machine from the receiving tray to the delivery tray past a point where labels are applied, a picker frame provided with a plurality of sets of pickers, a plurality of sets of label boxes, a plurality of pivotally mounted rocker arms, one for each set of labell boxes, each arranged to bear upon the labels in their respective label boxes, and means for locking all of said rocker arms when the labels in the label boxes have been pushed inward by their respective pickers, to relieve the pressure of the rocker arms on their respective labels while the end labels are being withdrawn by the pickers, means for unlocking all of said rocker arms after the end labels have been withdrawn by the pickers, to permit the pressure of the rocker arms -to force their respective labels together,
means for locking said rocker arms after the labels have been forced. together, -means for unlocking said rockerL arms just previous to the time the end labels are engaged by the pickers, and meansfor applying to the articles, labels carried; by said pickers.
20. A labeling machine comprising in combination, a continuously driven endless conveyer arranged to comvey an article to be labeled, pickers arranggdzto carry labels into the path of movement, of said article to be labeled, presser fingers. arranged to engage the label on said article to be labeled,
means for keeping said presser fingers in engagement with the article to be labeled, during the forward movement thereof, meansfor moving said presser fingers out of the path of movement of said article to be' labeled, and means for relieving the pressure of said presser fingers against the article to be labeled, previous to the time the presser lingers are moved out of the path of movement of the article to' be labeled.
21. A labeling machine comprising in combination, a continuously driven endless conveyer arranged to convey a plurality of articles to be labeled, a plurality of pickers arranged to carry a plurality of sets of labels into the path of movement of said articles to be labeled, a plurality of presser fingers arranged to engage the sets ot' labels on the articles to be labeled, during the forward movement thereof, means for moving said presser fingers out of the path of movement of said articles to be labeled, and means for relieving the pressure of said presser `lingers agamst the articles to be labeled, previous to the time the presser fingers are moved out of the path of movement of the articles to be labeled.
