Description

G. VOGEL.
GR IDDLE.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 5. I919.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE VOGEL, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLT'MBIA.
GBIDDLE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE Vosnn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Griddles, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My lnvention has for its object to provide a simple, durable, and inexpensive reversible griddle, which will cook the cakes better and quicker than the ordinary griddle and with less danger of burning.
My invention consists in certain details in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts of the device whereby the objects contem lated are attained, as hereinafter more ully set forth, pointed out in my claim and illustrated in the accompanyin drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a p an View of my invention;
Figi. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, an
Fig. 3 is a detail of the handle connection to the griddle.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the reference numeral 10 indicates a grlddle comprising a pair of preferably rectangular spaced metal plates 11 and 12 and an intermediate layer or sheet 13 of poor heat conducting substance, such as asbestos.
The plate 11 which is preferably of sheet iron is formed with a flatbody portion 14: and a raised rolled edge or flange 15 terminating in a rim 16 bent upwardly on itself as at 17 to form the flange or shou der 18.
The plate 12, which is also preferably of sheet iron and rectangular in cross section to fit snugly within the rim 16 of the plate 11 is formed with a flat body portion 21 having a peripheral flange 19. his flange seats within the pocket 20 formed between the flange 18 and the inner face of the rim 16, and the inner edge of the flange serves as a support for the plate 12. i
In actual practice the plates 11 and 12 are stamped out in suitable dies,- the flange 18 of the plate 12 assuming the dotted line position of Fig. 2. The asbestos sheet 13 and. plate 12 are laced in superposed position and inserte within the rim 16 and Specification of Letters Patent.

clamped therein, by folding the flange or edge of the rim upon itself against the flange19 of the plate 12. For convenience in forming the upturned flan e 18 the rim 16 andle 22 is secured to the griddle preferably by the swivel connection illustrated in Fig. 3, so that the handle may be swung either to full or dotted line positions. Any suitable look (not shown) may be provided to prevent accidental turning of the handle when in either of the ositions illustrated.
From the oregoing it will be seen that either the plate 11 or the plate 12 can be utilized as the top plate upon which to hold and heat the cakes, the raised edge 15 of the plate 11 and the turned up edge or flange 18 of the rim 16 serving to elevate the griddle from the stove or to retain the hot fat upon the griddle durin cooking, as the case may be. The reversi ility of the handle and plates adds greatly to the life of the griddle.
While I have shown the 'ddle to be rectangular in shape it is o vious that the same may be made round or any other desired shape. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In a reversible griddle, the combination of a pair of spaced plates, a sheet of asbestos between said plates, one of said lates having a raised or rolled peripheral ange and a rim portion, said rim portion having a portion thereof folded inwardly upon itself to form a flange and a pocket and the other of said plates adapted to be supported on said flange and having an angular lperipheral flange adapted to seat in said poc et, the rolled peripheral flange and the lnwardly folded portion of said first mentioned plate servin to retain the hot fat on one or the other 0 said lates according to which side of the gridd e is placed onthe stove.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE VOGEL. Witnesses:
