PER ARVID PElEJ.S01\,4 OF TBENTON, NEW JERSEY, SSIGNOR TO DE LAVAL STEAM TURBINE COMPANY, OF TRENTON, JERSEY, CORPORATION 0F NEW JERSEY.
CENTRIFUGAL PUMP.
To all whom imag concern:
Be it known that I, PER ARVID PETERSON, a subject of the King of Sweden, and a resident of Trenton, county of Mercer, and State of'New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in centrifugal pumps, and particularly, to an improved arrangement of a baiile or baflies designed to cause the delivery of incoming fluid to the rotary impeller, without whirling of the liuid4 at the entrance to the impeller and without the formation of objectionable eddies and other disturbances. My invention comprises a construction wherein a baie or baffles is or are located in the inlet passage of the pump and is or are supported on a bushing commonly pro vided around the impeller shaft.
The object of my invention is to improve 'fthe eliiciency of centrifugal pumps and the like; and, as a means fordoing so, to support in an improved manner one or more baiiies in the inlet passage of the pump adjacent the point of entry of the fluid to the pump, impeller. y
I will now proceed to describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawings, and will then point out the novel features in claims. In said drawings: i
Figure 1 showsa fragmentary elevation and partial vertical section of a portion of a double suction centrifugal pump embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 shows a transverse section through the water su ply passage of the pump, and shows a ba e mounted on the before-mentioned bushing; and y Fig. 3 kis a view similar` to Fig. 2except that two such baflies Yare shown mounted upon such bushings.`
In the drawings, 1 designates an upper section and 2 a lower sectionof the pump case, 3 the pump impeller, 4 the inlet v.to
that pump impeller, 5 the Huid supply passage of the pump case, 6 the impeller shaft,
l7 a bearing sleeve surrounding the impeller vshaft and 8 a further sle'eve or bushing surspeeineauon'of Letters Patent.

case, whereby said bushing 8 is held against longitudinal motion.
It has been found by experiment that the efficiency of centrifugal pumps may be increased considerably by the revision of. a suitable balile plate at the top of the suction chamber or fluid entrance to the impeller.
. Such a baile plate prevents the whirling but this method of securing the baffle plate in place is expensive and in various ways is undesirable. f
It is common practice in pumps to provide a sleeve or bushing, such as the sleeve 8, extending in through the said suction chamber 5 of the pump. According to my 'invention I employ this sleeve or bushing 8 for the support of the baille or batlies, such baffle or baffles being, preferably, cast integrally or otherwiseformed integrally with the bushing. In Figs'. 1 and 2, 11 designates such a baliie so formed integrally with the bushing 8. As shown, it is at the top of the suction chamber, and conforms gen# erally to the cross section of that suction chamber at the point where such baille is located, with. suitable clearance, however,..
evident, such a baiiie `tends eiliciently to prevent whirling of the fluid in the suction chamber, and to cause such fluid to enter the pump impeller in-'a substantially axial direction, without loss of energy in eddies or other disturbances.
4In some cases, as-indicated in Fig. 2, a single balle only is used. In other cases, as'indicated in Fig. 3, an additional baffle, 12, may be provided, this baile 12 being likewise vformed integrally, preferably, withthe bushing 8. In such case, the second ballie, 12, should preferably be formed to correspond with the axis of the How passage 5 in which it isV located. According to the design of the pumps, the curvature of such flow passages 5 differs greatly, and therefore in different designs of pump the curvature of the bams 12 will differ correspondingly; it being best as a rule that the curvature of such baiie 12 shall cause it to correspond substantially to the central aXis of the portion ofthe passage in which it is locate 1. In a centrifugal pump, the combination with a pump case having a suction chamber, and an impeller within that case having an inlet in a plane transverse to the plane of rotation, to which inlet said suction chamber leads, of a shaft for such impeller', and a bushing surrounding such shaft' and provided with a balile located in suchsuction.` chamber and arranged to reduce whirling of the fluid passing through such chamber on its way to the impeller.
2. In a centrifugal pump, thecombination with a pump case having a suction chamber, and an impeller within that case having an inlet in a plane transverse to the plane of rotation, -to which inlet said suction chamber leads, of a shaft for such impeller, and a bushing surrounding such shaft and secured against longitudinal motion and provided with a baffle located in such suction chamber' and arranged to reduce whirL ing of the fluid passing through such chamber on its way to the impeller.
3. In a centrifugal pump, the combination with a pump case having a suction chamber, and an impeller Within that case having an inlet in a plane transverse to the plane of rotation, to which inlet said suction l chamber leads, of a shaft for such impeller,
and a bushing surrounding such shaft and provided with an integral baiiie blade proj ecting from such bushing in a substantially axial plane into such suction chamber to near the top of such chamber.
In ltestimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PER ARVID PETERSON.
