Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WENDELL R. SWINT, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, ASSIGNOB TO E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS AND COMPANY, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, A CORPORATION OF .atented June 24, 1919.
DELAWARE.
EXPLOSIVE- COMPOSITION.
1 3()7 7(;6 Specification of Letters Patent.
No Drawing. Application filed January 31, 1918.
To (1/! w/mm it may] (mu-em lie it known that I, WnNm-iLL It. SWINT, of Wilmington, in the county of New Castle, and in the State of Delaware, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Explosive Compositions, and do hereby de clare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates particularly to the production of high explosiveshaving advantageous characteristics. and more particw larly to dynamitcs formed by the use of highly nitrated cellulose.
The object of my invention is to provide explosive compositions in the nature of dynaiuitcs containing highly nitrated cellu lose.
A further object of my invention is to provide compositions of this character containing nitroglycerin.
The object of my invention is further to provide explosive compositions having the following advantageous characteristics Compositions of this character provide dyunmites that are cheaper to produce than dynamites previously produced without changing the quality. l urtheru'iorc, compositions made in accordance with my invention are detonatable and can be used in blasting.
Further objects of my invention Will appear from the detailed description thereof contained hereinafter.
While my invention is capable of em bodiment in many different forms, for the purpose of illustration I shall describe only certain forms of my invention hereinafter.
Compositions made in accordance with my invention and which contain nitrocellulose of a high degree of nitration, as for example' nitrocellulose containing approximately 1.3% or more of nitrogen, can be used with the above advantageous results and can be made with or without the presence of nitrocellulose having a lower degree of nitration. The nitrocellulose having a lower degree of nitration acts to gelatinize the composition containing the nitrocellulose having a high degree of nitration. Such nitrocellulose having a lower degree of nitration might contain approximately 12.25% nitrogen.
Furthermore. compositions made in ac- Serial No. 214,637.
Niiroglycerin 25011. Insoluble nitrocellulose of high nitrzr tion llljlv. Sodium nitrate Wood pulp Another example would bc:-
Nitroglycerin 40 Q3}. Insoluble nitrocellulose of high nitration 12.1%. Soluble nitrocellulose of lower nitration 0.95. Sodium nitrate $3.0M. Wood pulp 4.0%.
It will be understood that. in the above c-on'ipositions, however. the oxygen-carrying salt and the absorbent may be omitted. and that other ingredients may be added to any of the aforesaid compositions.
hile I have described my invention above in detail, I wish it to be understood that many changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim 1. A high explosive composition containing nitrocellulose of a high degree of nitration, nitroglycerin. and wood pulp.
2. An explosive composition containing nitrocellulose of a high degree of nitration, nitroglycerin, nitrocellulose of a. lower degree of nitration. and wood pulp.
3. An explosive composition containing nitrocellulose of a high degree of nitration, nitroglycerin, an oxygen-carrying salt, and wood pulp.
4. An explosive composition containing nitrocellulose of a high degree of nitration, nitroglycerin. nitrocellulose of a lower degree of nitration, an oxygen-carrying salt. and wood pulp.
5. An explosive composition containing In. testimony that claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand.
WENDELL 1i. SWINT.
llili'ouulllllufiu of :1 high degree of nitration, nitroglycerin, sodium nitrate, and wood pulp.
(3. An explosive composition containing nitrocellulose of a high degree of nitration, nitroglyc'erin, nitrocellulose of a lower degrve of nitration, sodium nitrate and wood pulp.
Witnesses l. E. S'rmoKmNn, H. L. BRADLEY.
