To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES STANLEY Itrronns, Jr, a citizen of the United States,
residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useiul Improvement n Signaling Systems, of which the renewing is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompany- 111g drawlngs, forminga part of this spec1- fication.
My invention relates to signaling systems, and has for its object the provision of means to decrease the current consumption necessary to the operation of substation signaling devices.
In one form my invention is particularly applicable in connection withtelegraph systems wherein local relays and sounders are used. My invention of course can be desirably used in a plurality of different ways, but its general mode of operation will be apparent from its application to a telegraph system. In telegraph systemsthe relays and sounders are all operated on the closed circuit plan so that current is continually flowing except during the signaling operation, this current flow being continuous during all the time that the relay or sounder'is idle and not in use.
I will explain this form which my invention may take more in detail by referring to the accompanying drawing illustrating the same diagrammatically.
In this drawing I show a telegraph key 1 cooperating with its contact 2 and adapted through the agency of the battery 3 to send impulses over the line wires 4: and 5. The system herein shown is of the customary series telegraph type, the conduct-or 4 being shown as metallic, although in practice it may be grounded as is frequently the case. A short circuit switch 6 is shown which closes the line circuit when the key 1 is not to be operated. I have only shown one key,
although it is of courseevident that any.

Normally the resistance 15 is short circuited by the contacts 16 and 17 so that when the contact between the elements 8 and 9 is first established, the battery 1O meets with but the resistance due to the sounder coils. After the hammer 12 has moved a considerable distance in re sponse to the actuations of: the coil 14:, however, it engages the spring 17 and opens the short circuit about the resistance 15. This decreases the current consumption by nearlytwo-thirds. The inertia of the hammer 12 is sui'licien't not to objectionably influence the sound that it gives off when striking the anvil 13. During all the time that the hammer 12 rests against the anvil 13 but a small proportion of the current normally required to start the hammer in its movement is flowing from the battery 10.
Thus should the system be idle for a con siderable period of time, and it might sometimes be throughout the course oi: an entire night, the steady flow from the battery 10 is very materially reduced. The battery 10 in general is a gravity cell, the renewal of the, active elements of which costs about a dollar.
In the normal operation of a system which I have had under observation the cell 10 would last two months. With the introduction of the contacts 16 and 17 I am enabled to increase the life of this cell to six months. At the substation B I have shown the active coil 14 as occupying but a portion of the entire electromagnet, and have provided the electromagnet with a second winding 15 which is periodically short circuited by the contacts 16 and 17 similarly to the manner shown at the substation A.
