To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK Josnrn: Davis,
a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county ofSan Francisco, State of California, have invented a new anduseful Take-Up Device for Engine-Room Telegraphs, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to a novel construction of a take-up device for engine room telegraphs, wherein I employ or locate in the engine room, a back plate or guide plate, which is fixed or fastened stationary in the desired locationon a bulkhead, stiffener or the like in the engine room by suitable brackets. or thelike, said back plate supporting a front plate or sliding plate, which is vertically movable or adjustably supported with respect to or upon said back plate,the engine room telegraph receiver being fastened to said front plate, which may be considered as a unit with said receiver, said plates carrying abutments on theirupper portions with which I collocate a novel and simple arrangement of tension devices, whereby a constant tension is at all times maintained upon the wires leading from the bridge to the engine room, which is essential for the correct operation of the telegraph instruments, meansbeing provided so that in case the distance between the telegraph stand on the bridge and the receiver in the engine room should change, due to expansion or movement of the vessel, or for any other reason, my novel device will compensate for this movement or change of distance through the mediumof said tension devices and sliding plate employed and their adjuncts and thereby maintain a constant ten sion on the whole system, and further any desired tension on the telegraph wires can be readily obtainedby adjusting the springs or tension devices.
To the above ends, my invention consists of a novel construction of a take-up device for engine room telegraphs,the novel features of which will'be hereinafter fullyset forth, and pointed pm in the pended hereto. v

ent preferred'by me, since the same will be found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although itis to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

I provide vertical guide ways 3 on the back of the front plate 1, which can be formed in any. suitable or convenient manner, being constructed in. the present instance by the vertical strips 1 having the plates 5 secured thereto by thebolts orstuds 6, whereby vertical ways 3 areformed between the plates 5 and 1, which receivethe vertical opposite edges of the fixed or stationary back plate 2.
Near. the top of the front or sliding plate 1, I locate the brackets or angles 7 which are preferably two in number, having the vertical member 8, which is fastened to the top of the front plate, by means of suitable fastening devices 9, while the horizontal mem-j bers 10 of said brackets have the holes 11 therethrough, through which freely pass the rods 12, the upper ends of said rods being threaded, as indicated at 13, and passing through the horizontal member 14 of the brackets or angles 15, whose vertical member 16 is secured to the top of the back or guide plate 2 by means of the bolts, studs or other fastening devices 17. It will be seen that the horizontal members 10 and 14 form abutments for coaction with the tension devices to be referred to.
18 and 19 designate lock nuts, which are located respectively above and below the horizontal flange o-r-abutment 14, whereby each rod 12 is secured in fixed position with respect thereto, but can be adjusted vertically, iffldesired by manipulating said lock nuts. 7 I
20 designates coil springs or tension devices, whose lower ends rest upon the cupshaped Washers 21 and their upper ends upon washers 22, above which, are located the adjusting nuts 23 and the lock nuts 24. It will thus be seen from the foregoing that the upper ends of the rods 12 are secured in fixed relation with respect to the brackets or angles 15, but can be adjusted vertically when desired by manipulating the lock nuts 18 and 19, so that said brackets 15 and' back or guide plate 2 are stationary as a unit, but that the front or sliding plate 1 and its brackets 8 may have a cushioned up and down movement with respect to the fixed back plate 2, the extent of said movement being determined by the tension of the springs 20, which can be readily adjusted.

25' designates an engine room telegraph receiver, which is fastened to the lower portion of the front or sliding plate 1, which latter moves in unison with the receiver and may be considered as a unit with said receiver.
The engine room telegraph receiver 25 is of the usual construction and is believed to require no detailed description, the same, however, being provided with the pointer 26 and the drum or its equivalent 27, around which passes the endless connection or wires 28, the latter passing upwardly over the sheave 29, thence in practice horizontally and thence under the sheave 30, which is secured in any convenientfixed relation below the bridge 31, said wires 28 passing thence over the drum 32 of the stand 33, the latter being provided with the operating lever 34 of the usual construction, it being understood that the sheaves 29 and '30 are mounted in fixed or stationary bearings and that the stand 33 and the receiver 25 and their adjuncts may be of any usual or conventional type.
The operation is as f0ll0Ws:
It will be understood that the stand 33 is in connection with the receiver 25, which is fastened to the front or sliding plate 1, by means of the endless connections or wires 28 and that any predetermined or desired tension on the wires 28 of the whole system can be obtained by the proper manipulation of the nuts hereinbef-ore referred to.
In case, for any reason, the distance between the telegraph stand 33 on the bridge 31 and the receiver 25 in the engine room should change, due to the expansion or movement of the vessel, it will be seen that my novel take-up device will compensate for any such expansion or movement through the springs 20 and the sliding plate 1, having the telegraph receiver 25 thereon, and thus keep a constant tension on the whole system particularly on the wires 28, by merely adjusting when necessary the tension of the springs 20, which is desirable and necessary for a correct operation of the instruments, as will be evident to those skilled in the art.
It will be apparent that by reason of the tension of the springs 20, the front sliding plate 1 will be permitted to rise or to be lowered, whenever for any reason the distance between the telegraph stand 33 and the telegraph receiver 25 changes, so that the same tension will be at all times maintained throughout the whole sysem.
It will be apparent that my novel device can be cheaply manufactured and readily installed in position in the engine room, and when once installed is not liable to get out of order, and whenever it is desired to make the necessary adjustment of the tension of the springs 20, the same can be quickly and expeditiously done by the proper 1nanipulation of the nuts on the rods 12.
I have deemed it unnecessary to show or describe in greater detail the construction of the stand 33 and the telegraph receiver 25, since this device may be of any usual or conventional type, my invention relating particularly to the tension and take-up devices hereinbefore referred to.
It will be understood that in practice the endless connection 28 usually extends horizontally between the station-sheaves 29 and 30,instead of being inclined, as shown in the diagrammatic view in Fig. 4. It will be further understood that slight changes may be made in the manner of collocating the various elements, which Will come within the scope of my invention.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction of a take-up device for engine room telegraphs, which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while I have in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a take-up device for engine room telegraph systems, a stationary back or guide plate, a front sliding plate supported thereon, abutments projecting from the upper portions of said plates, an engine room telegraph receiver secured to said front plate, and tension devices intermediate said abutments carried by said front plate and back plate.
2. In a take-up device for engine room telegraph systems, a stationary back plate, a front plate slidably mounted on said back plate, abutments carried on the upper front portions of said plates, springs intermediate of said abutments, and means for adjusting the tension of said springs and for retainin the tension of said springs in their adjuste condition. 8. In a take-up device for engine room telegraph systems, a stationary back plate, a front plate slidably mounted on sald back plate, abutments carried on the fronts of said plates, and springs intermediate of said abutments, in combination with guide rods passing through said springs and the lower of said abutments, and means for adjusting the tension of said springs.
4:. In a take-up device for engine room telegraph systems, aback guide plate secured in fixed position, a front sliding plate capable of vertical movement wth respect thereto, an engine room telegraph recelver fastened to said front plate, brackets secured to the upper portions of said front and back plates, rods secured in fixed position upon the upper brackets attached to said back plate and having their lower ends projecting through and guided in the lower brackets carried by said front plate, nuts on the intermediate portions of said rods, and tension devices between said nuts and said lower brackets.
5. In a take-up device for engine room telegraph systems, a stationary back plate, a front plate slidably mounted thereupon, an engine room telegraph receiver mounted on the lower portion of said front plate, abutments secured to the tops of said plates,
rods having their upper ends secured to the upper of said abutments and their lower ends passing freely through the lower of said abutments, coiled springs surrounding said rods and having their lower ends supported on said lower abutments, and nuts carried by said rods above said springs for adjusting the tension of the latter.
6. In a take-up device for engine room telegraph systems, a fixed back plate, a front plate slidably mounted thereon, abutments on said back plate, rods depending from said abutments, a telegraph receiver on the lower portion of said front plate, abutments on said frontplate, springs surround ing said rods and having their lower ends supported upon the abutments attached to said front plate, nuts and washers on said rods intermediate of their ends for varying the tension of said springs, a stand on the bridge of the vessel, and an endless connection from said stand to said receiver.
7. The combination of a telegraph receiver adapted to be located in the engine room of a vessel, a stand adapted to be located upon the bridge of said vessel, an endless connection intermediate of said stand and telegraph receiver, a fixed plate located in said engine room, a plate slidably supported upon said fixed plate upon which said telegraph receiver is mounted, abutments projecting from said plates, tension devices located intermediate said abutments and adapted to cushion the movement of said plate, and means for adjusting the tension of said tension devices.
