Be it known that I, FREDERICK V. DOBBEL, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Sonoma, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
The hereinafter described invention relates to control mechanism for driven vehicles employing an internal combustion engine as the motor power for the driving thereof, and the same comprises means whereby on the application of the brake mechanism of the-vehicle for retarding the speed thereof, the engine is automatically converted from a motor factor into a compressor which cooperates with or serves as an aid to the brakes of the vehicle in controlling the speed thereof.
As well known, in retarding the speed of motor driven vehicle, it is the usual practice to cut off the gaseous mixture admitted into the cylinders of the motor and then 'apply the brakes, both operations being performed approximately simultaneously; thus, the reduced speed of the motor and the action of the brakes coact to retard the movement of t he vehicle until such time as the same is brought to a point of rest, and it is desired to release the clutch to permit the motor to solely operate, at which time the vehicle is held from movement solely by the operation of the brakes, also that in employing the motor for braking purposes by shutting off the flow of fuel thereto, and without admitting auxiliary air into the cylinders of the motor, the operation of the pistons by the momentum of the vehicle creates a vacuum within the cylinders which draws the oil upwardly from the crank case into'said cylinders, which excess of introduced oil into the cylinders tends to Carbonize on a subsequent operation of the engine under its own power.
The present invention has for its principal objects to provide an apparatus by the use of which, the application of the vehicle brakes to retard the movement of the -'vehicle automatically and approximately simultaneously converts the internal combustion.
motor into a compressor operated by the momcntum of the vehicle to cooperate with the brakes in arresting the movement of said vehicle; to provide a construction wherein the release of the brakes automatically reconverts the compressor into a motor, and wherein the release of the clutch while the brakes are applied also reconverts and restores the compressor into a motor and by so doing preventing the stalling of the engine when it is desired to bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
With the above mentioned and other ob- ]ects apparent from the appended description, the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereina. er described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and embodied in the claims; it being understood that the invention is described and illustrated in its preferred embodiment, and that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

In the several views of the drawings,
'herein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts. the numeral 1 is used to indicate a suitable motor of the internal combustion or explosion type, commonly employed in actuating motor driven vehicles, and the same is provided with the usual carbureter 2or other'fuel supply connected therewith by the inlet manifold 3, which is formed with a passage 4 which communicates with the cylinders of the motor, a passage 5 leading to the carbureter and a passage 6 connecting with the atmosphere, and ll intersecting.
A rotatable valve 7 formed with an L-passage S therein controls the various passages as hereinafter set forth.
For purposes of simplifying the disclosure I have illustrated, the power transmission and brake levers employed in a vehicle utilizing the well-known planetary type of transmission, however, it is to be understood that the invention is equally as well adapted to vehicles employing a clutch in the trans -mission system, whereby-the connection be? To the brake lever 9 for controlling the is pivotally connected as at'10 to one end of a catch 11, which slides through a suitable opening 12 in a' plate 13, the catch :being provided with a curved or beveled free end '14. The plate 13 is secured to one end of a shaft 14, rotatably mounted in bearings 15, extending upwardly from a base 16', disposed transversely of and detachably secured as at 17 to the transmission housing 18. A lug 19 projecting from and adjustably fixed to the shaft 14 and adapted to coact with one edge of the'p-late 13, limits the" rotation of the shaft rearwardly and a spring 20, coiled about the said shaft with one end attached thereto and the other'att-ached to one of the bearings 15, normally maintains said lug 19in contact with the edge of the base 16, asin Fig. 4 of the drawings. An arm 21, extendsfrom one end of pivotally con-. nectedby a rod 22 with one-end of an arm 23 extending laterally from the controlling valve 7, Figs. 1. and 2 of the drawings;
The operation of the brake lever 9 by a forward movement thereof to' apply the brakes in the direction of the arrow at to arrest or check the movement of the vehicle will cause the hooked-end 14 of the catch 11 to engage the surface of the plate 13. and

clockwise direction against the tension of the spring 20. The rotation of the shaft 14 as described throws the arm 21 rearwardly and through the rod 22 exerts a pulling,

It will thus be apparent that on each throw of the brake lever 9 to apply the vehicle brakes the supplyof fuel to the cylinders of the motor en-' gine is cut off and after being completely out 0E an auxiliary supply .of air is permitted to be drawn thereinto to cause the motor to serve at such times as 'a compressor. Connected with a clutch control lever 24, through the link 25 and rocker arm 26; is a trip arm 27, disposed. to lie beneath and on movement to contact with the curved or beveled end of the catch '11. The operation of the control lever 24 to release the clutch mechanism without stopping the engine, throws the trip arm 27 to engage the beveled end 14' of the catch 11 and place it'out of engagement with the plate 13, and when the brake control lever 9 is in normal position,
clutch control lever '24 immediately raises the free end of the catch 11 for the release thereof. However, should the brake control lever be operated to apply the brake and simultaneously operate the valve 7 to admit auxiliary air into the engine cylinders of the motor and the clutch control lever be then operated, the trip arm 27 will raise the free end of the catch 11, freeing the samefrom engagement with the plate 13, permitting the spring ,to return the valve 7 to normal position as in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
This construction overcomes the stalling or choking of the motor for lack of fuel to operate, as when the valve 7 is operated to convert the motor into a compressor. Simul taneously with the applying of the brakes the momentum of thevehicle will maintain. the compressoroperating as the clutch remains engaged and connection is com lete from'the drive wheels of the vehicle to the motor. On the disengagement of the clutch through the described operation of the clutch lever to enable the motof to run freely when the vehicle is standing for a short period and it is not desired to stop the motor, thevalve 7 is automatically thrown into normal position by the action of the spring 20 to reconvert the compressor into a motor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
.1. In combination with a vehicle, of an explosive or internal combustion motor for driving the same, brake actuated means for controlling the speed of the vehicle, a valve for controlling the flow of fuel to the-motween said brake actuating means and said spring-held operatin means whereby on the operating of said brake actuating means said valve is opened to provide a connection directly betweenthe motor and the atmosphere, and means for releasing said connection to permit the closing of said valve While the brakes are applied.
3. In combination with a vehicle, an explosive or internal combustion motor for driving the same, brake actuating means for controlling the speed of the vehicle, a fuel supply valve associated with the motor and capable of positioning to either connect the motor directly with the atmosphere or to supply fuel thereto, a connection between the brake actuating means and the valve for operating the valve to connect the motor directly with the atmosphere simultaneously with the operation ofsaid brake j actuating means, a clutch controlled member adapted for movement to disengage the connection between the brake actuating means and valve, and spring controlled means associated with the valve for automatically restormg'the same to fuel feeding positionon the disengagement of said connection.
4. In combination with a vehicle, an,in-
ternal combustion motor for driving the same, brake actuating means for controlling the speed of the vehicle, a valvecarried by the motor for controlling an auxiliary air connectionbetwe'en the motor and outside atmosphere, spring means for normally retaining the valve to cut off the supply of auxiliary air to the motor, a connection between said brake actuating means and said valve adapted for operating the valve to open said auxiliary air connection simultameans, means means associate neously with the operation of the brake actuating means,
means and valve whereby the said valve is and means for interrupting the connection between said brake actuatmg automatically returned to normal position by said spring means and withoutreleasing the-brake mechanism.
5. In combination with a vehicle, an interiliary air supply'to the cylinders thereof, and means cooperating with said clutch-control-for interrupting the connection between said valve and brake actuating means per- I flow of fuel to the motor and open an auxmitting said spring" to return said valve to normal position on the operation of said clutch control to released position and while said brakes are applied.
6. In a motor vehicle, the combination with an internal combustion motor carried thereby, brake actuated means for contrOl ling the speed of'the vehicle, clutch control associated with the brake actuated means and operated on the applica; ti'on thereof for cutting off the fuel supply to the motor and causing the motor to be operated by the momentum of the vehicle for assisting the brakes to retard the movement of the vehicle, means for normally maintaining said fuel supply controlling means in a position to sup 1y fuel to the motor, and with the clutch control means and operated by the movement thereof when the brakes are applied for admit- FREDERICK W.
