Be it known that I, LOREN W. PENNEY, of
Newtomin the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carding-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
In an application heretofore filed by me on November 20, 1917, Serial No. 204:,593, I
have described a means for. cleaning both.
the cylinder card and the doifer by the one stripping brush, which is located between the two and may be moved into engagement with either. My present invention relates more particularly to the mounting of the.

ence to the drawings, in which Figure 1 is aside elevation of a mechanism embodying my invention;

Fig. 4 being a longitudinal partial section through the axis of the stripping brush.
. The parts of an ordinary carding engine are only shown and described in so far as theyare necessary to indicate the application of my invention thereto. I V
A is that part of the casing which covers thev cylinder A A being that part of the casing which covers the doffer A On each side ofthe machine is a bracket B mounted on the cylinder casing A, this through two bushings D one at each end, each lying in a guideway forming part of a plate E connected to the side of the nozzle E this nozzle being shown in my previous application. This plate also has bearings F at each end thereof through which passes av shaft F having a handle F at one end thereof by which it may be turned, and on this shaft at each end thereof and bearing against the hook pieces Z) of the brackets B on the one side and the abutments b on the other side is an eccentric F which is mounted on the shaft F It will be seen from this construction that the turning of the handle F and hence the turning of the eccentric F will move the plate E of the nozzle together with the' nozzle backward and forward horizontally, and hence will move the stripping brush C either toward the 1 position, the bushings D of the shaft being thereby slid along the guideways in the bracket. At 6 is an adjustable screw stop which is adapted to engage the bushings and prevent the stripping brush from being moved too far into the clothing of the doifer. e is an adjusting screw to adjust the position of the bracket B after which the bracket is clamped by the nut b.
The nozzle E 'is mounted as described in my previous application and carries on its rear lower surface a foot-piece e which may be set into a suitable indentation a in the top surface of the casing or cover A to steady it.
The nozzle E is connected with a pipe E up through which the strips are drawn by a suction fan or pump. As it is desirable that when the stripping brush is not in use this passage should be closed, I have provided a gate or damper G'of sufficient length and suitably mounted to slide horizontally and so close the opening E between the nozzle E and the pipe E and this gate issamelength as the. stripping brush,- the pipe when the strippingb projects upward from the center of the nozzle only and is of comparatively small diameter as shown.

7 .In a machine of the kind described, a cylinder, a dofi'er and a nozzle, guideways located between said cylinder and said doffer, a rotatable stripping brush mounted to be moved in said guideways, and means for moving it connected to the end of said nozzle, said guideways having abutments and said means comprising a shaft carrying eccentrics supported at the end of said nozzle, said eccentrics engaging said abutments, whereby the rotation of said eccentrics against said abutments will move said brush mountings along said guideways and will also move said nozzle.
8. In a machine of the kind described, a stripping brush, a nozzle located to receive the strips therefrom, a pipe connected thereto whereby the strips may be carried away, a gate adapted to open or close the passage between said nozzle and said pipe, and means for operating said gate.
9. In a machine of the kind described, a cylinder, a dofi'er, a rotatable stripping brush and means for permanently supporting it between said cylinder and said dofl'er, a nozzle to receive strips removed by vacuum from said stripping brush, and a cover for said cylinder adapted to be removed to allow access to the cylinder.
10. In a machine of the kind described, a

In a machine of the kind described, a cylinder, a doifer, a rotatable stripping brush and means for permanently supporting it between said cylinder and said doii'er, a nozzle to receive strips removed by vacuum from said stripping brush, a cover for said cylinder adapted to be removed to allow access to the stripping brush.
12. In a machine of the kind described, a stripping brush, a nozzle located to receive the strips therefrom, a pipe connected thereto whereby the strips may be carried away, a gate adapted to open or close the passage between said nozzle and said pipe, and means for operating said gate, a cover for said cylinder adapted to be moved to allow access to the cylinder and means connecting said gate and said cover whereby they may be moved simultaneously.
13. In a machine of the kind described, a stripping brush, a nozzle located to receive the strips therefrom, a pipe connected thereto whereby the strips may be carried away, a gate adapted to open or close the passage between said nozzle and said pipe, and means for operating said gate, a cover for said cylinder adapted to be moved to allow access to the cylinder and means connecting said gate and said cover whereby they may be moved simultaneously and locked in open position.
