The object of my invention is to produce a simple, efficient and thoroughly reliable device of the kind described whereby the operation of the throttle or mixture d1scharge controlling valve of the carbureter will automatically control the admisslon of air to the mixture as it escapes from the carbureter. I To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims. I

In the drawings I have shown my improvement applied to an ordinary form of carbureter 1 having an a1r inlet 2 and mmture outlet 3 in substantially the usual manner with a flange 4 at the outlet for attaching the carbureter to the intake manifold of an internal combustion motor. As shown my improvement comprises a butter-fly valve of the usual or any preferred form having a valve plate 5 adapted to close the outlet opening of the carbureter rigidly attached to a tubular stem 6 extending centrally through the outlet opening and provided with a lever 7 at the exterior of the carbureter for oscillating the stem to control the position of the valve plate. As shown the ends of the valve stem 6 are closedand an opening 8 is formed'through the side I wall of the stem within the outlet 3 of the carbureter at the outer face of the valve plate 5 at substantially right angles thereto. In the form shown a part 9 is rotatably mounted upon the valve stem 6 between the hub 24 of the lever 7 and the boss 10 upon the carbureter inelosing the stem. As shown the part 9 is provided with a'stirrup 11 at one end adapted to snugly fit a pin 12 projecting from the carburetor near the boss i 10 adapted to rigidly maintain the part 9 in position upon the carbureter. A lateral projection 14: is also provided upon the part 9, said projection having a port 15 (see Fig.
4) extending longitudinally thereof with its inner end registering with a lateral opening 16 in the valve stem 6. The outer endof the part 15 is preferably provided with an angular part 17 at its outer end open at one edge of the part 9 so that air may enter the carbureter outlet bypassing through the port 1715 thence through the opening 16 and the bore of the valve stem 6 and thence escape into the carbureter outlet through the opening 8 in the valve stem. The several parts are so positioned and arranged that when the valve plate 5 is positioned to partially open the outlet opening of the carbureter the opening 16 and passage 17 will I be fully open thus permittin the maximum amount of air topass into t e outlet opening. As the valve plate 5 is moved however toward the fully open position the part 9 gradually covers the opening 16 until it is substantially closed when the valve arrives at its fully open position as shown in Fig. 6.
Any suitable means may be provided to close the outer end of the port 1517 when the valve approaches its closed position.
As shown the lever 7 is provided with a lateral extension 18 having a suitably formed socket 19 formednear' the end thereof and a plunger 20 is positioned in the socket 19 having a tapering end 21 adapted to engage and close the outer end of the passage 1517. As shown the plunger 20 is movable longitudinally of the socket and a spring 22 is provided adapted to normally. hold the plunger 20 at the outer limit of its movement as shown, in Fig. 4L so that as the lever is moved to close the outlet opening the plunger 20 engagesthe outer end of the passage l 5 17 and closes the same when the valve isin position for permitting sufficient mizgture to pass through the carbureter to cause th motor to which it is attached to operate satisfactorily light or idling. Whenit is desired to further reduce the speed of v the motor the lever 7 may be operated to completely close the. outlet opening of the carhureter, the spring 22 permitting the plunger 20 to recede into the socket sufiiciently to per nit this movement of the lever 7 after. the plunger 20 has closed the outer end of the passage. In this form the part 30 which corresponds to the part 9 in the form hereiirbefore described is provided with a substan-tially straight longitudinal passage 31 extending from the valve stem to its extremity and the end or face 32 of the part 30 is curved transversely to an arc the center of which is at the center of the valve stem. In this form also the part 33 which corresponds to the part 18 in the form herein-before described is provided with a substantially fiat end and a spring 34 is rigidly secured thereto having a part 35' provided with a broad curved face adapted to snugly fit against the face 32 of the part 30 to close the open end of the passage 31. A projection 36 is provided at theend of the face 32 adjacent the part 33 and the spring 34 is provided with a shoulder 37 adapted cations may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of my invention hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form or construcr tionshown.
WVhat I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent is 1. In a carbureter, a butterfly valve adapted to control the mixture outlet of the carbureter, said valve having a tubular stem provided with two openings through its side one of which is at the face of said valve, in combination with a part upon the carbjureter having a passage therethrough, one end of said passage, being adapted to register with they other opening in said stem when said valve is partially open, and means mounted upon said stem adapted to clOsethe opposite 3. In a carbureter, a butterfly valve adapted to control the mixture outlet of the carbureter, said valve having a tubular stem provided with two openings through its side one of which is at the face of said valve, in combination with a part rigidly attached to the carbureter having a passage therethrough, one end of said passage being adapted to register with the other opening in said stem when said valve is partially open, and means mounted upon said stem adapted to close the opposite end of said passage when said valve approaches its closed position.
4. In a carbureter, a butterfly valve adapted to control the mixture outlet of the carbureter said valve having a tubular stem provided with two openings through its side one of which is at the face of said valve, in combination with a part rotatably attached to said stem and rigidly attached to said carbureter' by said stem and having a passage therethrough, one end of which is adapted to register with the other opening in said stem when said valve is partially open, and means mounted upon said stem adapted to close the opposite end of said passage when said valve approaches its closed position.
5. In a carbureter, a butterfly valve adapted to control the mixture outlet of the carbureter said valve having a tubular stem provided with two openings through its side one of which is at the face of said valve, in combination with a part upon the carbureter having a passage therethrough, one end of said passage being adapted to register with the other opening in said stem when said valve is partially open said opening being gradually closed by said part as said valve approaches its fully open position and means mounted upon said stem adapted to close the opposite end of said passage when said valve approaches its closed position.
6. In a carbureter, a butterfly valve adapted to control the mixture outlet of the carbureter, said valve having a tubular stem provided with two openings through its side one of which is at the face of said valve, in combination with a part upon the carbureter having a passage therethrough, one end of said passage being adapted to register with the other opening in said stem when said valve is partially open, and resilient means mounted upon said stem adapted to close the opposite end of said passage when said valve ap roaches its closed position.
In a carbureter, a butterfly valve adapted to control the mixture outlet of the carbureter, said valve having a tubular stem provided with two openings through its side, one of which is at the inner face of saidvalve, in combination with a part rigidly attached to the carbureter having a passage therethrough one end of said passage being" adapted to register with the other opening in said stem when said valve is partially open, and means mounted upon said stem adapted to close the opposite end of said passagewhen said valve approaches its closed position.
8. In a carbureter, a butterfly valve comprisng a stem and a closure plate rigidly attached to said stem, said stem being tubular and having a slot therethrough to receive.
said plate and an opening through the wall of said stem at the face of said plate, said plate having a pair of notches in its opposite edges each adapted to register with said openings and the central bore of said stem and means for removably attaching said plate to said stem.
