IMPROVEMENT m PORTABLE OILERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,732, dated August 20, 1872.

v To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J AMES A. IVIATHEWSON, of Johnston, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have made certain new and useful Improvements in OiLCans; and I do hereby declare that the following specifi cation, taken in connection with the drawing making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

Figure 1 is a view of my improved oil-can.

Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.

The object of my invention is to so construct an oil-can that the discharge of the oilmay be regulated at pleasure and adapted to the purpose for which it is used, and consists in the improvements hereinafter described. I

I take an ordinary oil-can, as shown in Figs.

1 and 2, and cut upon the inside of the nozzle A, near the lower end, a screw-thread, which receives a corresponding thread upon the rod B. The rod B projects a short distance into the can and extends upward into the nozzle,

the upper end being either tapered off or provided with a small bulb, as shown in Fig. 2. The portion of the rod B upon which the screwthread is cut is of much greater diameter than the remaining portion of the rod, and has one or more holes, 0, drilled through it perpendicularly for the passage of the oil.

The operation of my invention is as follows: If a more abundant or rapid supply is required the rod B is unscrewed a little, which lowers the bulb at its upper end and increases the space for the passage of the oil, the nozzle A being of a conical form. If, however, a less quantity is desired,the rod B is turned in the stantially as described.

opposite direction, which raises the bulb and lessens the space through which the oil flows. Thus the discharge of the oil may be easily, regulated as the consumer may desire. In order to produce the necessary vent I drill a small hole through the thimble D, near the nozzle A, and connect therewith upon the inside of the can a small curved tube, E, which will permit the passage of the air. It is not intended to fill the can above this curved tube. When, however, the can is tipped to drop the oil, a small quantity will find its Way into the tube E, but owing to its peculiar construction and curve, will not be conveyed to the outside of the can, at least in any considerable quantity. If, however, a small amount should cscape and run down upon the nozzle A, it will, upon the can regaining its former position, run back into the tube E.

\Vhenever it is desirable to clean out this vent and tube it may be easily done by runnin g through a small wire.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The adjustable rod B, attached to the nozzle A by means of a screw-thread,- and operating in combination therewith, substantially as described, for the purposes specified.
