a machine gun which is extremely simple and light in construction and which may be fired rapidly under all conditions. The machine gun is provided with a double reversible barrel which may be adjusted to permit one barrel to cool while theother barrel is in use, and the rapidity of fire may be regulated by the adjustment of the. gears which connect the operating member with the load- .ing and firing mechanism. The hammer is operated by the cartridge wheel, and the cartridge wheel and the hammer are covered by a cap which may be readily removed to correct any trouble which may arise when firing the gun and also to clean the mecha nism.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification in which the preferred form'of the invention is disclosed.

By referring to the drawings it will be seen that the machine gun body is provided with a base 10 having an upwardly extending lug 11 which is spaced from the sides, and from the front and from the rear of the base 10; disposed on the base 10 at the sides of the lug ll there are side plates 12 and disposed between the side plates 12 and at the rear of the lug 11 there is a block 13,
of the lug another block 14 being disposed at the front 11 and between the side plates 12. The side plates 12 are secured to the .lug 11 by means of a bolt 15,'the block 13 is secured in position between the side plates by means of bolts 16, and .the block 14 is secured between the side plates by means of bolts 17. There are : bearings 18 and 19 on the block 13 between which there is an opening 20, and there is a bearing 21 in the block 14. J ournaled in these bearings 18, 19, and 21 there is a shaft 22, a cartridge wheel 23 being disposed between the blocks 13 and 14. and being secured to the shaft 22 for rotating with the latter. The cartridge wheel 23 has radial projectlons 2 1 and 25 which are spaced apart so that when the cartridge tape 26 is disposed around the cartridge wheel 23 between the projections 24 and 25 the forward and rear ends of the cartridges will fit the spaces between the radial projections 24 and 25 in a manner readily understood.
Disposed at the rear of the cartridge'wheel and secured for rotating therewith there is a cam member 27 which is disposed for engagement with the forward end'o f a hammer 28 which is disposed in an opening 29 in the block 13. The hammer 28 has a rearwardly extending stud 30 which fits into a bearing 31'at the rear of the opening 29 and around this stud 30 there is disposed a spring 32 for holding the hammer 28 yieldingly forward. Disposed at the rear of the cartridge wheel and adjacent the cam member 27 there is a block 33 which has in its upper surface a groove 34 for receiving the firing pin 35 which extends forwardly from the hammer 28. This firing pin 35 being disposed in position to engage a cartridge which has been moved by the cartridge wheel 23 to the firing position, the cam member 27 being so adjusted relatively to the hammer 28, that the hammer 28 and with it the firing pin will be moved rearwa rdly immediately preceding the movement of the cartridge to firing position the cam permitting the hammer 28 to move forward and with it the firing pin 35 immediately on the cartridge moving to the position in which it should be fired. Disposed over the cartridge wheel 23, the block 33 and the forward portion of the hammer 28 there is a cap 36 which with the cartridge wheel. 23 forms a chamber for the cartridge which is to be fired. This cap 36 is normally held in place by a screw bolt 37 which however, may be quickly removed to correct any fault should the firing mechanism become j ammed.

When the barrel member 38 is disposed in position it is held in place by means of a stud screw 43 in addition to the bearings 18 and 19 there is another bearing 44 in the block 13 in which a shaft 45 is journaled, gearing 46 connecting the shafts 45 and 22 so that the shaft 22 may be rotated by a crank 46 on the shaft 45. It will be understood that the gears connecting-the shafts 45 and 22 may be changed as may be desired to regulate the rapidity of firing, although the crank 46 may in all cases be rotated at the same speed.

1. In a machine gun, a gun body having an opening extending through its outer surface, a cartridge wheel rotatably mounted in the opening, a hammer having means for firing a cartridge which has been moved to a firing position by the cartridge wheel, and a cap for covering theopening which forms with the cartridge wheel a chamber for the 6 cartridge.v

spring'forholding the hammer yieldingly in one directlon, a cam rotatable by the cartr1dge wheel for moving the hammer in anopposite direction, and a cap for covering the opening which forms withthe cartridge wheel a chamber for the cartridge, the cap being removable to correct trouble at the cartridge wheel. 5. In a machine gun, a gun body having an opening extending through its outer surface, a cartridge wheel rotatably mounted in the opening, a block disposed at the rear of the cartridge wheel, a firing pin disposed on the block for firing a cartridge which has been moved'into operative position by the cartridge Wheel, means on the cartridge wheel for operating .the firing pin, and a 'cap for covering the opening in the gun body and which forms with the cartridge wheel a chamber forthe cartridge. 6. In a machine gun, a cartridge wheel, a hammer for firing the cartridge moved to operative position .by the carriage wheel, means on the cartridge wheel for operating the hammer, and a removable cap which forms with the cartridge Wheel a chamber for the cartridge.

15. In a machine gun, a gun body having a central portion with openings extend.- ing through its top and through its sides, the bottom and the sides of the gun body extending rearwardly beyond the central por-f ztion, means in the opening for moving a cartrldge into firing.position, a removable block provided with an opening disposed on the rearwardly extending portion of the gun bod and fitted between the gun body sides at the rear of the opening, a cap disposed in the upper portion of the opening in the gun body for .closing the opening atthe-top of the gun body, a hammer in the opening in the block having means for firing the cartridge which has been moved into firing position by the first mentioned means, and means operable by the first mentioned means for actuating the hammer.
16. A machine gun body having an opening which extends through the top, front and rear of the body, a block fitted between the sides of the body at the rear of the opening, another-block fitted between the sides of the body at the front of the opening, a cap for covering the opening between the blocks, and a loading and firing means in the opening between the blocks.
19. A machine gun body having an opening which extendsthrough the top, front and rear of the body, a block fitted between the sides of the body at the rear of the opening, another block fitted between the sides of the body at the front of the opening, a cap for covering the opening between the blocks, a loading and firing means in the opening between the blocks, a forwardly extending spindle on the secoiid block, and a barrel member rotatably mounted on the spindle and having a plurality of barrels any one of which may be moved into operative position by-the rotation of the barrel member relatively to the machine gun body.

In a machine gun, a gun body having an opening oblong in cross section, a stud extending in the opening and beyond the gun body, a barrel member mounted on the stud and having its breach normally fitting the opening to prevent rotation, it being possible to move the barrel member forward, rotate it, and move it (back again to normal position, and means for holding the barrel member in normal position.
22. In a machine gun, a gun body having an opening extending through its outer surface, means to move a cartridge to firing position in the opening, a block disposed in the rear of the said firing position and provided with a groove in its outer surface, a firing pin in the groove, a cap disposed against the block for holding the firing pin in position and forming with the means a chamber for a cartridge, and means to operate the firing pin.
23. In a machine gun, a gun body having an opening extending through its rear and through the body intermediate its forward and rear ends, a block for closing the opening at the rear of the body and provided with a bearing, a shaft journaled in the bearing, a cartridge wheel mounted on the shaft to rotate with the latter, a cap for closing the opening intermediate the forward and rear ends of the body and forming with the cartridge wheel a cartridge chamber, means to rotate the shaft, andmeans for firing a cartridge-which has been moved into firing position by the cartridge wheel.
