IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,717. dated August 20, 1872.
Specification describing a certain Improvement in Draft Attachments for Plows, invented by JOHN T. HOVIS, of (llintonville,Ven-ango county and State of Pennsylvania.
The object of this invention is to render possible the shifting at pleasure of the draft of a plow when plow ng up or down hills, raising the point of draft when descending, and lowering it when ascending, without stopping the team. The invention consists in an arrangement of parts whereby a plate with which the ring that the team is attached to is connected is made movable up and down in 'the clevis at the front end of the plow beam, and can be fastened at any particular point.
Figure l isan elevation of one side of the I which the whiffletrec is attached. A link, 0,
connects the top of the plate a with the front corner of a triangular frame, f, which is pivoted at its rear corner to a lug springing from the upper branch of the clevis. The third or upper corner of the frame f is connected, by a bar, g, with a lever, h, pivoted to the side of the beam near the rear end thereof. This lever has a tooth, h, formed on one side of it, which tooth engages with a ratchet-bar',i,that is supported in a nearly horizontal position by fastening to the handle I, at its rear end, and at its front end to an arm, m,that springs from the plow-beam. The lever h is kept in en gagement with the ratchet-bar by a spring, a, fastened at its lower end to the lever, and bearing against the inner side of a rail, 0, placed parallel to the bar 1', and fastened to it at its ends.
The plowman, by passing the spring at and lever h together, can separate the lever from the ratchet-bar, and can then move the lever backward or forward, as may be necessary, to raise or lower the plate 0, through the medium of the frame f, link 0, and connecting-rod g. Thus the draft can be altered without stopping the team. On releasing the springn it imme diately throws the lever h back into engagement with the ratchet-bar.
I claim as my invention The combination of the plate 0, link 0, triangular frame f, connecting-bar g, lever h, with a plow-beam and clevis, all arranged and operating as described.
