Description

P. H. BROWN. SHOE. APLicATloN FILED M112, 1918-.

' 'tnvTTED STATES. PATENT OEEIOE..
TERLEY H. BROWN, or HUDSON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR To APSLEY RUBBER COMPANY, OE HUDSON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OE MASSACHUSETTS.
- SHOE.
To all whom. it may concern.'
Be it known that I, PERLEY H. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hudson, county of Middlesex` State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shoes, of which the following isla specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. l
My invention relates to a new and iinproved shoe of a character which'can be manufactured by the methods commonly employed in a rubber shoe factory as distinguished from methods commonly employed in a leather boot and shoe factory. The particular object ofthe invention is to provide a heavy work shoe preferably having a. canvas upper and a fiber outsole having the general appearance of a leather boot or shoe of the Goodyear or McKay type. The shoe embodying my invention is of strong, durable construction, very easy for the wearer and can be manufactured at a relatively small price. The invention will vbe fully understood from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings andthe novel features thereof will be pointed out and clearly defined in the claims at the close of this specification. lIn the drawings, Figure 1 is a side eleva` tion partly in section of a shoe embodying my invention. l
Fig. 2 shows the shoe with the upper .pulled over the lastI and insole and the filler piece in place.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a shoe in the condition shown in Figa 2.' n
Fig. 4 shows the shoe after the application of a frictioning material to the inturned margin of the upper and the filler.
Fig. .5 Shioyvs the shoe Aafter the middle sole has been applied.
Fig. 6 is a plan of the shoe shown in Fig 5.
At 1'1 'in the several figures is shown the upper oft-he boot or shoe. This is preferably of canvas or other fabric material such as is commonly used in the manufacture of sneakers, tennis shoes and work shoes which are mamlfaetured in a rubber factory. The upper may be of anydesired shape and out. In the drawings, I have shown an upper-for a blucher having a vamp 12 and tip 13. At 14 is shown an insole which is preferably be more convenient.
Specification of Letters Patent.' Patented June 17, 1919, Application med october 12, 191s. serial No. 257,853.' A
composed of 'stiff material Such as leather or fiber board. A metal shank 15 may be used if desired. The insole 14 is laid on a metal faced last and the upper 11 is then pulled over and the margins secured to the insole 1n any suitable manner, as by tacks 1G, the points of which are clenched against the last or by rubber cement. This pulling over and lasting operation may be doneby a pulling over or lasting machine or by hand as may A filler piece 17 to level up the Shoe is then laid in place being stuck down with cement. Thereafter the inturned margin of the upper and the bottom surface of the filler piece 17 is covered with frictioning material comprised of rubber dissolved in a Suitable solvent.
18 in Fig. 4. Thereafter a middle sole 19 This layer of frictioning material is designated composed of a flat.- )iece of high grade rubl ber stock preferab y containing fabric is laid in place. This stock is l-in a tacky adheslve condition when put in A place. It is then secured in part b v tacks 20 which fol` low the margin of the shoe and pass through the upper and insole. The mlddle sole is also secured by the adhesion resulting from the subsequent vulcanization of the friction-` ing material. After the middle sole has been secured in place an outsole 23 which may be provided with a heel 24 is put in place. This outsole is cut from a sheet of vulcanizable liber stock of the kind now commonl employed for soles of boots and shoes an protrudes beyond the margin of the middle sole so that the shoe has something the appearance of a Goodyear welt shoe as dlstinguished from the ordinary sneaker or tennis shoe in which the Outsole is'in part Se-` cured to the upper by means of a foxing of rubber following the line of contact between the upper and the sole.y After the Outsole has, been put in lace, 'it is pressed firml onto the shoe an theentire shoe is vu canized preferably by the dry cure in the manner well known to rubber shoe manufacturers.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the shoe embodying my invention is provided with a fiber outsole secured to the remainder of the shoe by the adhesion resulting from vulcanization. .The margin of the said outsole protrudes to give the shoe the desired appearance and some of the advVliet l' Gleim ie:
