UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM R... WILSON. Ol'. UNION CITY, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR F ONEHALF T0 DELBER'I '1. WILSON, OF UNION CITY, INDIANA.
AUXILIARY AIRFINLET DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1'7, 1919.
'.,| lica tion filed November 6, 1918. Serial No. 261,404.
To all 'wltoiri it may (On 30TH Be it known that I, ll'inman R. Wilson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union City, in the county of Randolph and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Auxiliary Air-inlet Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provides simple means whereby an additional supply of air may be introduced into the fuel couduitotan internal combustion engine, the construction being such that no changes need be made in known parts, it being necessary mcrcl y, to clamp a sim plate between the carbur tor and the out ct leading to the engine, he
' usual connectin bolts being employed.
, ing notches 5 in its ends It is within t 1e province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objectsan view, which will appear as the description pro ceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, with; in the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing firom the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 shows in section, a device constructed in accordance with the invention,
arts 9. arin in elevaticn- Fi 2 is a seciion taliia ii a l oximately on the ine 22 of Fig. 1; and 1g. 3 is a section taken through the device forming the subject matter of this aplication.
The numeral 1 denotes a carburetor and the numeral 2 marks an outlet member, leading from the carburetor to the cylinder of an internal combustion engine. he parts 1 and 2 are connected by bolts 3 or other securing elements, the construction above alluded to being common and well known.
In carrying out the invention, there 18 provided a carrier, in the form of a plate 4 havthe notches being adapted to receive the bolts 3 which connect the carburetor 1 to the outlet member '2. Consequently, the plate or carrier 4 may be held between the carburetor and the outlet member by the usual instrumentalities whereby these parts are connected. The plate 4 has an opening 6 within which 15 located a nozzle 7 having side perforations 8, the nozzle being held in place by means of an arm 9 formed into -'all with or connected to the plate 4 at t e e go of the opening 6. The nozzle 7 is held in place, further, by a pipe 10, communicating with the interior of the nozzle and mounted at its outer end in the plate. The pipe 10 may be alluded to as a conduit opening into the nozzle and opening through the late.
The plate-4 is provided wit 1 a lateral projection 11, enlarged at its outer end, as shown at 12 to receive a hole 14. A pivot element 15 is mounted in the projection 11 and on the pivot element, a valve, in the form. of a plate 16, is mounted to swing. The valve 16 is supplied with an openiii 17 adapted to be brought into and out 0 registration with the outer end of the conduit 10. The valve 16 may be mani ulated in any desired way as, for instance, y means of a. rod 18, mounted to slide in the hole 1 1 and pivoted at 19 to one end of the valve 16, the valve being fulcrumed, intermediateits ends, on
the pivot element 15. The rod 18 is operated b any suitable means (not shown) from t e dash board of a motor propelled vehicle, or elsewhere.
The valve may be swung on its fulcrum 15, to bring the opening 17 in the valve into and out of registration with the outer end of the conduit 10, .it be in possible, by this procedure, to regulate file amount of air drawn through the conduit. From the conduit, the air passes into the-nozzle 7, and it is distributed through the perforations 8.
Owing to the provision of an alditional air supply, as above described, a thorough combustion of the fuel will be effected, carbon deposits will be reduced, and, generally, the efficiency of the engine will be enhanced. It is to be observed that the device forming the subject matter of this a plication is ombodied in a simple late a opted to receive the bolts 3, and to e clamped between the carburetor 1 and the outlet member 2, no changes being wrought in existing and known internal combustion engine construe-- tions.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is In a device of the class described, a plate lon 'tudina 1y 0 the nozzle and having a laterally discharging perforation in its side wall, the axi of the nozzle being dis osed approximately arallel to the axis 0 the opening, the perip e11; of the nozzle being spaced mm the perip ery of the openin to ermit the passage of fuel etween the perip ery of the nozzle and the periphery of the opening, the nozzle projecting beyond one s de face of the plate; a. single conduit formin a communication between the outer edge 0 the late and the interior of the nozzle and em ying a pipe projecting into the opening. the pipe being assembled at one end with the plate and being assembled at 15 .its other end with the nozzle to support the nozzle; and a valve subject to manipulation by an operator and movably 'mounted on the plate at the outer end of the conduit,
the .valve oonstituting means for controlling 20
