TRAIN-HOSE COUPLING.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 17 1919.
Application filed September 21, 1917. Serial No. 192,577.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ADAM REMER and JOHN S. TRIPP, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Train-Hose Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to train-hose couplings for train pipe connections and is an improvement upon a patent granted to us May 1, 1917 and numbered 1,224,211.
The object of the invention is to improve the construction disclosed in the said patent by providing the coupling with a butt-face gasket connection, rendering the operation of coupling easier, simplifying the construction thereof and permitting the coupling members bein made shorter in length.
A further object is to provide a simplified means of guiding the coupling members together, so as to insure registering the air passages and to hold the same in such registered position to insure a positive operation of the air brakes.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring in detail to the drawings, there is shown a pair of coupling members, each of which is secured to the draw-bar A through the medium of a bracket 10, which bracket extends from the draw-bar and enters a slot 11 provided in the rear extension of the coupling member. Any suitable means may be employed for holding the coupling member, which is designated at 12, upon the bracket, the means shown consisting of a Washer 13 and a cotter pin 14.
Each of the coupling members is formed wltha shoulder 15 and between the shoulder and the bracket 10 is positioned a coil spring 16, the object of which is to normally force the member forward and to take-up the jar incident to the operation of coupling.
Each of the coupling members 12 is formed with an air passage 17, which enters through the side of the coupling member as shown at 18, the opposite end of the passage openingthrough the face 19. At this point the face of each of the coupling members is countersunk to form a socket 20, which is adapted to receive a compressible gasket 21, provided with an opening 22 registering with the air passage in the accompanying manner.
Secured within the entrance 18 of each of the coupling members is a short pipe section 23, which is provided with a valve 2-1, the outer end of this pipe section being provided with means indicated at 25 for securing the said section to the hose connection of the train line.
Each of the members 12 is provided upon one side thereof with a. guide ring 26, which extends laterally of the said guide. Located upon each of the coupling members opposite the guide rings 26 is a conical guiding ele ment 27, which is so positioned as to enter a guide ring of the opposite coupling member, to cause the air passages in each of the members to register and to hold them in such registered position.
It is believed that from the foregoing description, and read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation and advantages of the invention will be apparent. The right is reserved to make such changes as will fall within the scope of the claim hereto appended.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed is A train pipe coupling comprising in combination a pair of identically formed coupling members, each of said members including a coupling head and a draw bar located centrally of and extending rearwardly from said head, said coupling head having an air passage entering at the side and extending through the end thereof, a gasket surrounding the end opening a ring extending latera spring surrounding the draw bar to urge ally from one side of the coupling head and the coupling members together.
