Description

GARMENT STAY.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 26. 1911.
Ow 1 Gd 1 7n 1 m J d ADNIRAM J. COOK, OF WESTERLO, NEW YORK.
GARMENT-STAY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 17, 1919.
Application filed September 26, 1917. Serial No. 193,235.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADNIRAM J. (3001:, a citizen of the United States, residing at Westerlo, in the county of Albany, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Stays; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improvement in garment stays and has particular reference to a wire stay for corsets.
In known constructions, stays have been formed by providing series of convolutions arranged in vertical rows and having contiguous edges of said rows secured together, as by welding, but an objection to said construction resides in the fact thatby welding the parts of the stay together the same is deprived of the necessary flexibility.
It is therefore proposed, in the present invention, to provide a stay formed from a single length of wire bent to provide a plurality of convolutions or loops between certain of which extend joining or connecting portions which give to the intermediate portions of the stay the required strength and flexibility without in any way securing said intermediate parts together.
Another object is to provide a stay of the above stated characterlstics, in which the convolutions will include straight portions extending longitudinally of the stay and arranged with respect to each other so as to form, in effect, sectional center and side ribs giving proper stiffness to the stay, these portions being connected by lateral portions readily distortable torsionally, thus giving proper elasticity to the stay.
The invention further embodies a stay of this character which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a stay with the cover therefor broken away.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the wire forming the stay.
In the drawing, the numeral 3 indicates the cover of the stay in which the stay wire, generally indicated by the numeral 4, is secured, the ends of said wire having the tips 5 secured thereto whereby to protect the garment from said ends.
The stay 4: is formed from a single length of material and each end is bent to provide the transverse portions 6. Contiguous to said portions, the wire is bent at right angles to form a longitudinal edge portion 7 from which extends diagonally the connecting or joining portion 8. The remainder of the wire is bent to form longitudinal rows 9 of convolutions or loops, each of which is preferably of a triangular formation and the adjacent loops of each row are disposed in staggered relation and extend in opposite directions to each other with certain of the bases 10 thereof alining to form in efiect the outer longitudinal sectional edge ribs for the stay. row are alined longitudinally between the outer edges of the stay, thus forming a sectional center rib, in efiect. The loops of one row, the bases of which form said outer longitudinal ribs, are opposed to the corresponding loops of the other row, and these opposed loops are connected by the diagonal joining portions 11 which alternately extend diagonally in opposite directions, said joining portions forming certain of the sides of said opposed loops and being of a length greater than that of a side of any one of said loops. It will be apparent from the foregoing description that by constructing the stay of a single length of wire bent as set forth with the sectional ribs and the elongated joining portions connecting opposed loops, the stay will have the required strength and the joining portions 11 as well as the diagonal portions of all of the loops, will be of sufficient flexibility and sufficiently distortable torsionally, to permit of the stay bending as required.
What is claimed is 1. A garment stay formed of a single length of wire bent to provide rows of convolutions certain of those in one row being connected to opposed convolutions in the other row by joining portions which alternately extend in opposite diagonal directions, the joining portions forming certain of the sides of the convolutions which they connect, the other convolutions of each row being interposed between the joining portions of the next adjacent convolution, said The bases of the other loops of each.
interposed convolutions at one side including portions overlapping similar portions of the interposed convolutions at the other side, to form a sectional rib for the stay.
2. A garment stay formed of a single length of Wire and provided 011 each side of the middle thereof with a row of convolutions certain of those in one row being con.- nected to opposed convolutions in the other row by joining portions which alternately extend in opposite directions, the joining portions forming certain of the sides of the convolutions which they connect, the other convolutions of each row being interposed between the joining portions of the next adjacent convolutions, said interposed convolutions at one side including straight portions alining longitudinally of the stay with similar portions of the interposed convolutions at the other side.
3. A garment stay formed on each side of the middle thereof with triangular convolutions, certain of the convolutions 011 each side of said middle having common sides and being arranged in staggered relation, the convolutions on each side of the middle of the stay forming rows and the alternate convolutions of one row being. connected to the opposed convolutions of the other row by joining portions which alternately extend diagonally in opposite directions, the joining portions forming certain of the sides of the convolutions which they connect, the other convolutions of each row being interposed between the joining portions of the next adjacent convolutions, and including relatively long straight portions extending longitudinally of the stay.
4. A garment stay formed with a plurality of convolutions, certain of said. convolutions including straight portions alining longitudinally of the stay between the side edges thereof, certain others of said convolutions including straight portions alining longitudinally of the stay at one side edge thereof, and certain others of said convolutions including straight portions aliniug longitudinally of the stay at the opposite side edge thereof, said straight portions of the adjacent convolutions, longitudinally of the stay, being connected by diagonal portions forming part of the convolutions- In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
