PULLEY-MOUNTING.
- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 119 10, 1919,
Application filed September 21, 1918. Serial No. 255,071. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT G. BEEDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pulley-Mountings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pulley mountings, and pertains more particularly to a mounting used in connection with a take-up pulley for spinning machines.
In spinning machines of certain classes or types, the band drives two spindles, one on either side of the machine, but more generally, the band drives four spindles, two on each side of the machine. Owing to the twist necessary to divert the band, or alter the direction of its movement from a straight line, the take-up pulley must be set at a corresponding angle to permit free traction of the band. In some types of machines the band must be diverted from a straight line, in a direction to the right, while in certain other machines the band must be diverted from a straight line in a direction to the left.
The present invention therefore aims to provide a pulley mounting which enables the pulley to be set by a mere slight movement thereof, from a right to a left position, or vice versa. In brief, the pulley is carried by a, mounting which is set by moving same to assume an inclined direction to the right or left, and is held in such position by a screw or equivalent, so that the two adjustments can be easily and quickly effected by merely altering the position of the mounting.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing parts in section and the invention applied to a spinning machine, the latter shown in fragment and partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the bearing whichforms a part of the pulley mounting.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the bearing set to a position to the left.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but with the shaft omitted, and
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the bearing looking into the end thereof.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, a bearing 1 is employed whichhas a cut-out 2 leading from its center radially through the periphery of the bearing. The bearing is formed at about its center with two oppositely inclined grooves 3 and 1 which intersect centrally of their lengths as depicted in Fig. 4, the grooves being formed so that one is located to the rear of the other.
A fixture or bracket 5 is carried by the bearing 1 and has anupstanding arm 6 to which the pulley 7 is suitably journaled, the bracket further having a depending counterweighted part 8, and a curved slot 9. A set screw 10 extends through the slot 9 and through a hole 11, provided therefor in the bearing 1, having threaded engagement with the walls defining hole 11, and engaging a shaft 12.
The shaft 12 is squared and the grooves 3 and 1 are shaped to conform thereto. The bearing 1 has its periphery engaged by the wall of a curved or segmented opening formed in the fixture 6, so' that the fixture can rotate about the bearing to a partial extent governed by the limit of the length of the slot 9 of the fixture engaging the set screw 10. Thus the in and out or swinging movement of the pulley 7 borne by the fixture 6 is limited or defined.
In operation, it will be apparent that to shift from a right to a left hand set of the take-up pulley 7, it is merely necessary to loosen set screw 10 so as to allow the shaft 12 to be engaged in the corresponding groove 3 or 4 as the set may require, whereupon the set screw is again tightened so as to firmly connect the bearing to the shaft, the bearing being moved from the position of Fig. 2, to that shown in Fig. 3, or vice versa, depending upon the required set of the takeup pulley as is believed manifest.
The belt shown at B it will be understood passes around both spindles and the pulley as well as the drive cylinder G and has a, twist as shown. The counterweight serves to overbalance the tension pulley 7, thereby maintaining a constant tension upon the belt B.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a pulley mounting, in combination with a shaft, a bearing mounted on the shaft and having a pair of crossed inclined shaft receiving grooves located at about its center and also having a radial cut-out leading into the center, a fixture rotatably mounted over the bearing and having a radial slot, 3. pulley journaled on the fixture, and a set screw extending through the slot and bearing'and' ing on the shaft having a pair of crossed in-'- clined grooves therewithin with a cut-out leading radially through the bearing, said grooves bein formed'to receive the shaft so as to allow the bearing to be tilted to either the right or left, and a pulley carrying fixture carried by the bearing.
3. In a pulley mounting, a shaft, a bearing'on'the shaft having grooves therein to receive the shaft SOELS' to allow the bearing to be tilted with respect to the shaft, and a 15 pulleyrotatably carried by the bearing.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERBERT a BEEDE.
