PORTABLE DRILLING AND REAMING- MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 10, 1919.
Application filed October 30, 1918. Serial No. 260,261.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. GOUGHTRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lorain, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Portable Drilling and Beaming Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object a portable machine for drilling and reaming and similar operations, and particularly applicable for drilling and reaming rivet holes in shipbuilding, which machine is particularly simple in construction and highly efficient and rapid in operation, and it consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of one embodiment of my machine.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2, Fig. 1.
This machine comprises generally, a body or frame, a tool carrier mounted in the frame, a series of tools as reamers mounted in the tool carrier and rotatable relatively thereto, the carrier being movable by the movement of the body over the work to carry the tools successively into operative position, and means for rotating the tools. The body 1 may be of any suitable form, size and construction and as here shown includes opposite side bars which terminate at their upper ends in handles 2 and which have truck wheels 3 at their lower ends.
4; is a tool carrier which is here shown as rotatable and in the general form of a hollow cylinder or a disk having hub 5 and an annular flange 6. The hub 5 is mounted on a shaft 7 carried by the frame as hereinafter set forth.
8 are the tools as reamers mounted in the flange 6 of the carrier and extending radially outwardly relatively to the carrier 4, the reamers having spindles or shanks 9 extending through the flange 6.
The reamers are rotated about their own axes by means carried by the body or frame 1 and, as here shown, this means includes a driving gear 10 mounted concentric with the carrier 4.. and meshing with beveled gears 11 mounted on the inner ends of the spindles element 15, a shaft 16 connected to the motor and journaled ina bracket 17 supported between the side bars 1 of the frame, a sec- 0nd shaft 18 also journaled in bearings formed in the bracket 17 and in a third bracket 19, intermeshing gears 20 and 21 'mounted respectively. on the shafts 16 and 18 9 and means also carried by the body 1 for actuating the gear 10.
and intermeshing gears 22, 23 mounted respectively on the lower end of the shaft 18 and on the gear 10, the gear 23 being here shown as formed integral with the gear 10.
The motor 14 may be an electric motor or an air motor and is connected with a suitable supply of power through electric wires or an air pipe connectible at 24 to the motor. The operation of the motor is controlled by suitable-levers 25 and 26.
The carrier 4 and reamers 8 constitute a wheel which support the body or frame 1 and the side bars of the frame fulcrum on the shafts 7 and 12 and the weight of the parts carried by the reamer above the shafts 7 and 12 is counterbalanced or partly counterbalanced by a weight 27 located at the lower ends of the arms of the side bars 1 be- .tween the truck wheels 3.
In operation, the holes having been previously drilled in a horizontal surface or the location of the holes to be drilled indicated or marked 01f, the machine is then moved on the truck wheels 3 by lifting on the handles 2 to place one of the tools 8 in one hole or on the center mark indicating the position of the hole to be drilled. The motor is then started so that the reamers are rotated through the shaft 16, gears 20, 21, shaft 18, gears 22, 23, driving gear 10 and beveled gears 11, the body being tilted about the axis of the carrier 1, that 1s, about the shaft the machine over the work, (the machine being supported by the carrier and one of the tools) to bring a new tool into position to ream or drill another hole and to lift the first tool out of Operative position.
This operation is repeated along a line or series of holes, the operator merely wheeling the machine along on the wheel constituted by the carrier 4 and the tools 8.
The carrier 4 is removable and interchangeable with other carricrs having differently spaced tools, it being understood that the tools are spaced so as to properly space the holes to be reamed or bored in the work.
This machine is particularly advantageous especially in shipbuilding as a large number of all the rivet holes can be reamed in a short time compared with the method now used.
