SHEET-DELIVERY MEGHANISM FOR PRINTING-PBESSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 10, 1919.
Application filed April 18, 1916. Serial No. 91,982.
In printing presses where very wide webs are printed, it has been found very difficult to accurately out the web transversely by a single cutting mechanism, as for instance,
by coacting rotary cutters, for the reason that it is almost impossible to keep the out ter blades from sagging; and it has also been necessary to materially slow up the travel of the wide web to permit it to be cut as it passes through said cutters.
The principal object of this invention is to provide means for slitting the wide web into two or more narrow webs and providing separate sheet cutting means for each narrow web, thus insuring an accurate cutting of the sheet and the cutting of the same at any desired speed of the wide web.
A further object is to provide novel means for delivering the sheets cut from the nar row webs. The sheet delivery more specifically includes a sheet carrier having inde' pendently operated alined sets of grippers for taking the sheets cut from the narrow webs, and another sheet carrier having a common set of grippers arranged to take the sheets and deliver them side by side.
My invention also more'particularly includes the provision of means for passing the narrow webs and the sheets out there from through the machine in different paths without lateral movement, the cutting devices for the narrow webs being of less length than the wide web and being arranged in different transverse planes and the sheet delivery mechanism being. of the full width of the wide web for delivering the sheets cut from the narrow webs simultaneously and side by side. i
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of so much of a flat sheet delivery mechanism for printing presses as will give a clear understanding of my invention.
Fig. 2' is a vertical longitudinal section through the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail section showing certain of the gripper operating cams not shown in Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a detail .view of the gearing for driving the several parts.
The wide web 1 is passed over a slitting roll 2, where it is slit longitudinally of its travel into narrow webs; in the present instance two narrow webs, by a slitting disk 3. The two narrow webs 4 and 5 then pass between the rolls 6 and 7, and the narrow web 4 is passed rearwardly and around the roll 8, while the narrow web 5 is passed forwardly and around the roll 9. Two pairs of coacting rotary cutters 10, 11, and 12, 13, are arranged in diflterent transverse planes, the cutters 10, 11 being used to out sheets from the narrow web 4, and the cutters l2, 13 being used for cutting sheets from the narrow web 5.
Means are provided for passing the nar row web 4 through the rotary cutters 10, 11, which means in the present instance, is shown as an endless carrier in which the side chains 1.4 which pass over the pairs of upper and lower sprocket-s 15 and16 are provided with side grippers 17 carried at intervals along the same and arranged to grasp the side edges of the narrow web 4 before the web reaches the rotary cutters 10, 11, and carry the web through said rotary cutters and finally direct the head of the narrow web into the guide 18. Similarly, an endless carrier comprising the side chains 19, passing over the pairs of upper and lower sprockets 20, 21, having side grippers 22, is provided for carrying the narrow web 5 through the rotary cutters 1.2, 13, and direct the head of the narrow web into the guide 23.
The sheet delivery mechanism is herein shown as comprising the rotary sheet can riers 24, 25, 26, 27, and the endless delivery carrier 28.. The rotary sheet carrier 24 is provided with a set of grippers 29, arranged to transfer the sheets cut from the narrow web 4, successively to the setsof grippers 30, 31, on the rotary carrier 25. Sets of grippers 32 33, in alinement with the sets of grippers 30, 31, respectively, are arranged to take successive sheets out from the narrow web 5. The rotary carrier 26 is provided with two sets of grippers 34, 35, the grippers 34 being arranged to take the heads of two sheets side by side out from the narrow webs 4 and 5, from the alined sets of grippers 30, 32, on the rotary carrler 35;
and the set of grippers 35 being arranged to take the heads of two sheets side by. side cut from the narrow webs 4 and 5', from the alined sets of grippers 31, 33. The rotary carrier 27 is provided with a set of Ti ers' 36 arranged to take the pairs of sheets cut from the narrow webs 4 and 5, successively from the grippers 34 and 35 of the rotary sheet carrier 26, and transfer the sheets. to the successixe sets ofgrippers 37, carried by the side chains 38 of the endless. delivery The side frames of the machine are de noted by 42 and 43, and the intermediate short longitudinal frames by- 44 and The rotary cutterslO and 11, and the means for passingthe narrow web 4 through the cutters are mounted between the-side frame 43 and. intermediate frame44; andthe rotary cutters l2 and 13, and the means for passing the narrow web 5 therethrough, are mounted between the side frame 42 and the intermediate frame 45, thus locating the .cutters for the two narrow webs in different transverse planes.
Therolls 2, 6 and 7 extend the full width of the wide web, and the rolls 8 and 9 extendpreferably only the-width of their respective narrow webs 4 and 5. The rotary carrier 24-and its grippers 29, extend preferably only the width of the sheets cut from the narrow web 4, while the rotary carriers 25, 26 and 27 and the endless delivery carrier 28, extend the full width of the wide web, so as to properly handlethe sheets-side by side out from the two narrow webs 4 and 5.
The cams for operatingthe set of grippers 29 of the rotary sheet'carrier 24, at their receiving and transfer. points, are denoted by 46, 47. The cams for controlling the operation of the set of grippers 30, 31', of the rotary sheet carrier 25, at their receiving and transfer points, are denoted by 48,49,
and the cams for controlling theoperation. of the grippers 32, 33, of the rotary sheetcarrier 25, at their receiving and transfer points, are denoted by 50, 51. Thecams for controlling, the operation of the grippers 34, of the rotary sheet carrier 26, at their receiving and transfer points, are denotedby 52, 53, and the cams for controlling the op.- eration of the grippers 36, of the rotary sheet carrier 27, at their receiving and transfer points, are denoted by 54, 55. The cams noted by 58, 59, and the cams for controlling the operation of the side grippers of the carrier which conveys the narrow web 5 through the-rotary cutters 12, 13, are denoted by 60, 61.
It will be noted,.therefore, that the alined sets of grippers 30,32, and 31, 33, are independently operated to'ta-ke sheets. cut from their respective narrow webs. V V
The shaft of the slitter 3 is geared to the shaft of the roll 2,. throughthe gears 62, 63, and the shafts ofthe rolls 6, 7 and 8, are driven through the gears 64, 65, 66,67, 68. The rotary cutters l0 and 11 ,aredriven' through the gears 69, 70, 71'. The endless carrier forfeeding; the web 4, through the cutters 10, 11, is driven frointhe gear 72 on the shaft of the rotary cutter 11. ,The rotary cutters 12 and.13 are driven through the gears 73,74, 75, and the roll 9 is driven through the gears 76, 77,378 The endless carrier for passing the narrow web 5 through the rotary cutters-12,13, is driventhroughthe gear 79. The rotary carriers 24,25, 26, 27, are driven through the gears 80, 81, 82, 83, and the I endless delivery carrier 28 is driven through the gears 84, 85.
From the above description it will be seen that by providing a separate cutting mechanism for each narrow web, the cutting mechanisms; are kept within a. convenient length .for accurate and rapid severing of the sheets flOlIrthG narrow webs.
It will also be-seenthat by mountingithese sheet cutters indifferent planes, the narrow webs and the sheets cut. therefrom may be passed through the machine without lateral movement. 7
It is: evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the various parts without departingfromithe spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth, but
