SAFETY ATTACHMENT ro a POCKE'IS.
tachments for Pockets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
' This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in safety attachments for pockets and deals more particularly with that type of devices wherein the inserted article is clipped in position.
The main object of the present invention is to prevent as far as-possible accidental loss or theft of the inserted article.
Another object of the invention resides in the fact that it will require the use of both hands in order to remove thearticle from the pocket after it has been secured therein. A still further object-of the invention is to associate with thearticle apart of the securing means which when inserted within the pocket and clipped therein positively prevents its withdrawal in a vertical direction until it has first been moved horizontallyto clear the clip. I
Another object of the invention resides in the novel arrangement of the pull member to the outside of the pocket whereby the clip to the interior of the pocket may be held to permit the withdrawal of the retained article.
While there is described in the following specification and shown in the attached drawings the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is, of course, understood that the present attachment is notso limited, as it may be optionally applied to such articles as watches, pocket books, or, in fact, to any valuable article to which the annular band member can be readily associated. Also the parts as described may be made of various materials, as metal, celluloid, wire, etc., or a combination of any or all of these.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, wherein similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout: I
Figure 1 illustrates a perspectlve new of the plate which is secured to the inner wall of a pocket.
Fig. 2 shows the annular bandmember associated with a watch stem. Fig. 3 is a plan view partly in section.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 10, 1919.
Application filed February 19. 1919. Serial No. 277.979.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation partly in section of the device attached to a pen or pencil.
Fig. 5 is a front elevation.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the rear of the plate as shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 7 is a top plan view, showing two clips arranged on the plate.
Flg. 8 is a perspective view of a slightly modified form of the plate wherein all of the parts are stamped from a single sheet.
Fig. 9 is a further modification of the clip, and Fig. 10 shows the annular member used on the inserted article when such'a clip as that shown in Fig. 9 is employed.
In the drawings 1 indicates a garment pocket to the inner wall of which the plate 2 is arranged. This plate 2 may have riveted thereto, as shown in Fig. 1, or stamped therefrom, as in Fig. 8, a spring clip 3 and extending to the opposite side of the plate are stamped out or bent ears 4. These ears 4 are perforated, as at 5, for the purpose hereinafter described. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the perforated ears 4 extend through the front wall of the pocket 1 and inserted through the perforations is a bar 6 of a snap pin 7. In order to prevent the unsightly appearance of the ears 4 and also the snap pin 7, a pull member 8 is employed, preferably of leather, which is secured to the bar of the snap pin, as more clearly shown in Fig. 4.
Associated with. the article to be secured within the pocket is a band member 10 which is preferably split, as shown at 11, said band being of a sufficient resilient nature to firmly grip the article and prevent relative longitudinal slippage thereof. This band is provided with a flange 12 at each longitudinal end thereof so that theband as a whole presents an annular formation which is readily slipped into the springaclip 3 with a flange i bove and one below the clip, as shown in As illustrated in Fig.7, a plurality of clips of varying sizes may be employed if desirable for securing articles of various cross diameters.
The modified form illustrated in Fig. 9 consists in slotting the side walls of the spring clip 3 as at 3 for the purpose of receiving the annular member 10, shown in Fig. 10, which is attached to the article to be secured in position. It will readily be un derstood that the annular member 10' enters the slotted portions of the spring clip thereby effectively preventing the vertical wlthdrawal of the article until it has first been moved horizontally to 01m the clip;
The parts being in their apfilied positions, a brief description of the manipulation of the device is as follows: The article is inserted within the pocket and is moved for- Ward until the annular band member is snapped into the spring clip with its flanges disposed one above and one below the-clip. l/Vhen it is desired to withdraw the article the operator grasps the pull member with one hand and the inserted article with his other, then, by causing a relative horizontal movement between the parts until the band is clear of the clip, the article may then and then only be withdrawn from the pocket.
Although I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the in vention, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims. I claim: I la In a device of the character described, the combination of,a spring clip adapted to be permanentlysecured in position within a pocket, and an annular member arranged on the inserted article and adaptedto be secured, in the spring clip.
I 2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a spring clip adapted to bevpermanently secured in position within a pocket, and a channeled band arranged on the inserted article and adapted tobe secured in the spring clip.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a spring clip adapted to be permanently, secured in position within "a pocket, and a member provided with terminal enlargements arranged on the inserted artlcle and :adapted to be secured in the spring clip with said enlargements disposed to either side thereof.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of'a spring clip arranged within a vpocket, means associated with said clip and extendingthrough the wall of the pocket, and a fastening member connected therewith for securing the clip in position withinthe pocket, and an annular member arranged on the inserted article and adapted to be secured in the spring clip. r
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a metal plate adapted to be secured to the inner wall of a pocket, said plate being provided with resilient clip arms, and a channel-shaped member i associated with the inserted article, said chan- -nel-shaped member to be secured between in position within the pocket.
the resilient clip ,arms'lto prevent a vertical withdrawal .of the article untilthe'same has first been moved in another direction.
6. In a device ofthe scharacter described, the combination of a metal plate adapted to be secured tothe inner wall of a pocket, said plate being provided with resilient clip arms, and means associated w ith theinserted article and adapted to be secured between the clip arms to prevent a vertical withdrawal of the article until the same has first been moved in another direction.
therefrom a plurality ofaperforated ears,
said ears adapted to project through the wall of the pocket, and a crossbarv inserted through the apertured ears to hold the plate I 9. In a device of the character described comprising a metal plate arranged vwithin a pocket, said; plate having inwardlyextending therefrom a spring clip and out wardly therefrom a plurality of-perforated ears, said ears adapted to project through the wall of the pocket, and a snap pin having one of its bars inserted through the aperturedears to hold the plate in position within the pocket.
V 10. In a device of the character described 7 comprising a metalplate arranged rwithin a pocket, said plate having inwardly '6X tending therefrom a. spring clip and outwardly therefrom a plurality of perforated ears, said ears-adapted to project through the wall of the pocket, a snap jpinlfhaving one of, its bars insertedthrough the apertured ears to hold the plate. inposition with inthe pocket, and a pull member associated with the otherbar of said snap pin' whereby the clip may be held, to, permit the withdrawal of the retained-article.
In testimony whereof Iafiix my signature in presence of two'witnesses. a
