Application filed May 9, 1913, Serial No. 766,472.
To all whom it may concern:
I Be it knownthat I, CHARLEs F. PYM, a subject of the King of England, residing at Detroit, inthe county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Lasting-Binders, of which the following'is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. H A r Inflasting boots and shoes it has been found, under some conditions, to. be desirableto perform the operation of shaping or forming the upper around and against the end portion of the last independently of the operations of forming the edge portion of the upper downupon the inner sole and securing it, as explained in my companion ments in processes of lasting boots or shoes.
Oneobject of this invention is to provide binding an upper evenly and smoothly upon an end portion ofa last after it has been worked into that position and, it" may be, for holding the upperuntil it is secured to an innersole upon the last bottom. For use in practising the application it is method described. in said desirable that the binder be so formed and that it be detachably secured in place in such a way that neither the binder nor the securing means shall interfere with the working over, 1 forming down, and securing of the edge portion of theupperat said end portion of the shoe, thus permitting said'operations of'lasting over an'd'securing the edge portion to be performed at any tlme subsequent to the application of the binder and in any desired manner. Av further object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap and capable of holding a lasted endportion of an upper firmly in place upon the lastagainst distortion or displacement until or during the securing of the edge portion of the upper to the innersole of the shoe. r
A feature' of the invention consists in a binder membersueh, for example, as a flexible stri or band provided with one or more retaining the binder in its proper relation'to the shoe. In the construction shown the binder strip is provided at itsends withflanges adapted to lie upon the bottom of the shoe, the strip and flangesbeing shaped relatively for' the strip Specification of Letters Patent.
ioe below the Patented June 10, 1919. Renewed September 5, 1916. Serial in. 118,548.
to embrace the side face of an inverted lasted plane of the shoe bottom and for the flanges to extend inwardly over the shoe bottom, said flanges being formed to enable them to'be detachably secured to the shoe bottom, as for example, by having holes through which tacks may be driven.
The foregoing and other objects, and features of the invention, including certain more important details of construction, will appear inconnec-tion with the following description of the illustrative embodiment of the invention and will then be pointed out in the claims. M a i t In the drawings: 1
"Figure 1 is a perspective] view of a partially lasted shoe showing abinder embodying the invention applied thereto.
Figs.2, 3and at are "perspective views of other forms of binders detached;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a binder of modified form; and t Fig. 6 is a sectionalview of a further modified binder illustrating its application and a means for drawing it to place.
The binder illustrated as embodying this invention comprises a ribbon or strip 16, Fig. 1,: offlexible sheet material, of which sheet brass is a satisfactory example, of suitable length to extend around the end of the toe of a shoe and back along each side of the forepart such distance as it is usual or desirable to bind the upper in the lasting operation. This binder, in the form constituting the illustrated embodiment of this invention, is adapted to be applied around the toe of the last toclam and hold the upper of either a welt or a lVlcKay shoe to the side face of the last, although this invention is not limited to such use. In addition to the body or band portion the illustrated binder comprises an attaching portion at each end consisting of a lateral flange 1 7 bent from one edge of the body portion. As shown in the drawings, where the above described special use of the invention as an outer binder is illustrated, the attachingflanges are integrallateral extensions of thestrip and are bent inwardly to lie over the marginal portion of the, shoe bottom and be fastened down upon the upper material and into the outer face of the sole. For greatest utility it is proposed to manufacture the binder of material which will permit of repeated use on diflerentshoes, and the flanges toe by outside pressure,
are formed to enable them to be detachably secured to the shoe bottom. Such 'material available for the purpose cannot besu'ccessfully erforated by the fastenings, such as lasting tacks, usually employed for securing binders in place and the flanges are therefore provided with openings, Fig. 1, through which holding tacks 18 can be driven into the shoe bottom stock. It will be understood, however, that the invention in its broader aspects is not limited to this par ticular means of attachment.
The" binder may be clamped around the as by an end em.- bracing means in an end lasting machine or means operating as described in myprior Patent 1,126,271, or by application of tension to one or both ends of the binder, and for. the latter purpose the flanges are provided with eyes 19 adapted to be engaged by a toolsuch as 31 in'Fig. 6, or such as thebinder tightening device shown in Letters Patent 1,084,311.
It will be noted that for the-use illustrated in Fig. 1 in which the band is bent around the outside of the'toe the flanges are formed on-the upper edges of the strip and are bent inwardly therefrom. The same band 16 is adapted to be used for binding theupper to the innersole lip of a welt innersole by bending the band reversely and turning it over so that the flanges extend from the edge which is lowermost and lie upon the upper that has been lasted over the marginal portion of the shoe bottom.
ln -the illustrated use of the invention the flanges 17 serve to locate the adjacent portions of the band or strip 16 in proximate relation to the edge of the inverted shoe. It is within this invention to extend this function, as for example, by the construction shown in- Figs. & and 6 where the flange is extended throughout the length of the band, being reduced in width around the toe'as at 30 and also joined to the body portion by a curve instead of an angle in these figures, whereby to tend to clamp the upper to the edge of the top face of the he inverted shoe, and being a notched in Fig. la The notches in Fig. 4 -present spaces; on the margin of the shoe innersole of bottom in whichlasting tacks can. bedriven as in Fig. 1, and the notches are arranged tdpresent inturned sharp prongs 28 between them which are adapted to engage .the margin of the upper in a way to assist in holding it from slipping under the band.
flntheconstructions shown inFigs. 2 and V 5 .the. ;function of preventing the body por- $1011 of the band from slipping down around the toe and also the function of clamping the upper to the edge of the innersole, are performed. by individual. inwardly curved flanges or lugs 21 and 26.
the shoe.
In binding the upper against the outer face of a last having a thin or receding toe, as indicated indotted lines in Figs. 2 and 6, it is sometimes advantageous 'to guard against the binder slipping upas well as orinstead of slipping down. For this pur- .vention and described a preferred embodiment thereof and how the invention may be used,- I claim as new and desire to'secureby LettersP-atent of theUnited States: 1.
