provision of a device of this character which is carried by the end gate and adapted to engage the sides of the wagon body whereby the end gate may be easily removed or replaced.
A further object is the provision of means for adjusting the fastener to accommodate end gates and wagon bodies of various widths.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which may be connectedtothe endgates and wagon bodies now commonly in use.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more clearly understood from the following'description and drawing, in
which Figure 1 is a rear end view of the wagon body with the end gate and fastenerin position, and
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates the bottom of the wagon body and 2 the sides thereof. Vertical strips or cleats 3 are connected to the inner faces of the sides 2 and as is more particularly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings these cleats are spaced apart to receive the end gate 4 therebetween. Vertical strips 5 are secured to the outer side of the end: ate 4 and are provided with the longitudinal grooves 6 for the purpose that will be presently described. Grooves 7 are formed in the outer cleats 3 and ooves- 8 are formed in the ends of the sldes 2 for the purpose that will be presently described. Plates 9 are secured to the outer faces of the sides 2 and are provided on the outer end with a notch adapted to re ister with the grooves 8 in the sides 2. The end of the plates 9, on
each side of the notch is bent atright angles to form the projectionslO.
A rod 11 is received in the grooves 6 of v the middle strip 5 and one of the end strips and is held therein by means of plates 12 which overlie the rod and grooves. A link 13 is received in the grooves of the opposite end strip 5, said strip being provided with two grooves 6 which are vertically spaced. A plate lei is secured to. the strip and overlies both of the grooves as well as the link. A rod 15 is connected to the link by means of the eye 16 formed on the end of therod and said rod 15 is provided on the opposite end with an enlarged head 17. This rod 15 will pass through the groove 7 formed in the strip or cleats 3 and the groove 8 formed in the sides 2 and through the notch formed in the plate 9. The enlarged head 17 will be received behind the projection 10 as is more particularly illustrated in the drawings. A rod 18 provided with an eye 19 is connected to, the eye 20 formed on the end of the rod 11 and the outer end of the rod 18 is threaded as indicated at 21 to receive a nut 22 which is adapted to be received behind the projection 10 formed on the plate 9. By having the eyes 16 and 19 on the rods 15 and 18 respectively, it will be seen that they are pivotally connected to the link 13 and rod 11 respectively. The rod 18 will pass through the groove 7 formed in the cleat 3, the groove 8 formed in the sides 2 and the notch formed in the plate 9. A lever 23 having the perforated ears 24 is pivotally connected to the link 13 by said link passing through the opening in the ears and the lever is provided with an integral projection having an opening 25 adjacent the end thereof to receive the end of the rod 11 which is bent to form an eye 26 whereby the rod 11 is connected to the lever.
, Having fully described the detailed construction it is thought that the manner of operating and the advantages will be clearly understood. It will be seen that I have provided an end gate fastener which can readily be connected to the wagon bodies and end gates now commonly in use and which may be adjusted, by operating the nut 22 on the threaded rod 21, to accommodate end gates or wagon bodies of various widths. It will also be noted that the fastener is also carried by the end gate so that all of it will be understood that it; could asequally well be used on an end gate formed in sections which are hmgedly connected to.-v
gether. 1 In the drawings the fastener is il-- lustrated, inafull lines, locking the end gate in position and in dotted lines Fig. 2, with the parts released whereby the end gate may be removed. When it is desired to remov e the end gate the lever 23 is rocked outwardly thereby sliding the rod 11 and link 13 in opposite directions whereby the enlarged head 17*of-the rod .15 and the nut 22-011mm rod 18 will be. disengaged from behind the projections 10 whereby the rods may be swung: on. their pivot points and removed from-ithe; grooves formed inthe cleats andendsof'the sides 2. When this has been done the endf gate may be raised and removed from between the cleats. It
will, be'notedjthatby providing the grooves; guide will be.
6in the vertical strips 5 a formed for'the rod "11 and the link 13 whereby they. will easilyslide' and be held'in position Whentheendgate is again lowered'betweenthe cleats the rods 15and-18 are swung in position to lie in the, grooves. 7 andf8 and the'notch in theplates 9 and the lever-23' is" then forced upwardly whereby the rod 11 and' li nkl 13 will be brought toward one another and the enlarged head 17 on the rod 15 and the nut 22 on the thereof, an end gate mounted in said body. having grooved strips secured thereto, a rod slidably'mounted on one side of the end gate, a link slidably mounted on the opposite side, a securing lever provided with spaced inwardly directed ears pivotally secured to the said link at the inner end thereof, said lever beingfurther providedwith an integral projection and apertured to receive the inner end of the said rod, fastening rods pivotally. connected to the outer ends of'the said'li'nk and rod adapted to be slidably received withinthe slots provided in the ends of" the plates, and means for holding the fastening rods within the slots:
when the lever'is forced inwardly.
