tauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in PaddleWVheels, of which the following, taken in connection with theaccompanying drawings, is a specification.
The invention relates to vessels and means. for propelling the same; and the improvement consists in providinga simple yet strong-paddle wheel mechanism in which thecontour or propelling surface of each paddle is progressively increased and diminished as said paddle wheel is turned arounda fixed cylinder'placed off center for. the inner ends of the paddles or buckets which graduates the extension ofsaid paddles'sothat they obtain a deep broad hold on the water on the lower side'of said cam- .shaped boxing and are so slidably mounted as to recede into the wheel on the upper side of said cam-shaped boxing thus giving the desired strong propelling force uponhthe water and being largely out of the way during the upper portion of the rotation; and

A chain 14 preferably ofthe sprocket type, extends around the cylinder 13 and has pivotally attached thereto at spaced distances the link arms 15 which extend out therefrom and are. pivotally attached to the paddle 16 at theouter end of the arm 15' openings, one each side of the slot 18' to bear against and roll-freely upon the smooth 'cylinder 13, the rodsv 20 being welded to the blade 16 at each end. A track for the rollers 19 may be provided on said smooth cylinder 13 extending around thefperiphery thereof without departing fromemy invention.

The drum is rotatably mounted on the fixed boxing 13 on the shoulders 24, the drum-being held=in place by means of the spider plate 25 which is attached on the squared end 26 of the shaft 10, being hel'd'against the shoulder 27'b'y means of the attaching nut 28 and bolted to the drum 21-22. It is now apparent that the paddle'wheel drum formed by the parts 21 and 22 will be revolved upon thefixed cylindrical portion of the box 12-13 on the bearings 24 by the turning of the shaft '10, the'rollers '19 running freely upon the outer surface of the cylinder 13 and the pivotally mounted arms or links 15 allowing the adaptation of the inner ends of the paddle blades 16 to the position of the-different parts during the rotation of said blades 16 and the chain 14 around the cylindrical boxing13.
Each ofthe divisions 21 and are provided with the correspondinglyspaced open ended slots 29 which fit to one another and extend radially having the inwardly extending flanged projections 30- each side of each slot 29 to form guide ways for the paddle blades 16 as they move outward and inward during rotation. The inwardly projecting spaced. flanges 3O extending crosswise of each half-21 and 22 meeting in the center around the inner periphery of the paddle wheel-drum, said flanges 30 extending upon the -innenend wallsof the drum nearly to the cylinder 13 when placed thereon.
In operation, the shaft 10 is rotated thereby turning the drum 2122 with the paddle'blades attached therein thereby rotating the chain 14 around the fixed cylinder or cam shaped boxing 13 causing the 'rollers 19*on'the inner ends of'the paddle blades 16 to roll around the cylinder 13 thereby increasing the extension of said paddle blades 16 through the slots 29 on the lower side of the drum 2122 the distance whichthe cylinder 13 is set ofi' center toward'said lower side and withdrawin'g saidblades 16 within the paddle drum 2122 a-substa-ntially equal distanceon the upper side thereby obtaining a large paddle or bucket'surface on :the lower-side as pass through the'water and giving a wheehand giving less resistance to the paddles on the "upper side of the paddle wheel "as they pass through the air. The arms 1'5 move' the blades orpaddles'in and out of the drum 21-22, though said arms are assisted' by gravity.
Theifiexible chain =14 is'p'rovided to allow for :change of stroke for the paddles 16 and for the constant change of form from wear and other causes in the drum '13. The cam shape of the drum 13 may be changed without departing from my invention.
I claim as new: 1. A paddle wheel comprising a shaft, a cam shaped boxing for said shaft, a chain movably mounted around said boxing, paddle blades attached to said chain in spaced relationwith:freedom of movement around said boxing, a drum in two parts attached to one another and to said shaft, said drum having spacedopen ended slots in each of said partsto coincide and form one slot when said parts flare attached to one an- ."other to receive said paddle blades therethrough in radial-'alinement with said shaft. A paddle wheel :comprising a shaft, a fixcd cylindrical boxing mounted 'ofi' center for saidshaft, a chain movably mounted around said fixed cylindrical boxing, paddle blades having slots in their inner ends to receive said chain therethrough, arms 'pivotally attachedto said'chain at one end andto said blades "at the other to permit said *ar-ms'to-move backward and forward :through said slots, rollers on the inner ends of said blades to roll around said fixed cylinder, and a drum having radially spaced slots around the periphery thereof to receive said paddle blades therethrough in'radial 'alinementwithsaid shaft to give an outward and inward movement to said paddle bladesas they rotate around said off center boxing.
3. A paddle wheel comprising a shaft, a journal forv said shaft consisting of a comparatively large cylinder mounted off center on said shaft toward its lower side, a chain rotatably mounted around the central portion-0f said cylinder, paddle blades having a central open ended slot on each of their inner ends to receive said chain therein, a link arm pivotally attached at one end in said chain and at the other end to said paddle blades near the outer ends of said open ended slots to permit sidewise adjustment for the inner ends of said paddleblades, and a drumaround said cylinder having spaced slots therein placed radially to hold said paddle blades in radial alinement with said shaft with freedom of outward movement on the lower side and inward movement on the upper side of said shaft.
