PATTIsoN, citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus fo Use in Making Cores or the like, of which the following is 'a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for use in the forming ofmo-ldsiand sand cores ofthe kind used in metal molding.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an apparatus of thiskind b means of which unskilled persons can ma ze cores or molds which would otherwise require the services of experienced core makers or molders. r
Other ObJQCtS oft-he invention are to provide an apparatus or this kind by means of which cores and molds can be made'more rapidly "and with greater ease; also to pro vide an apparzdu's of this klnd w1th means for enabling a core box or other sand con tainer to be quickly and accurately positioned on the supports therefor; also to provide apparatus. of this kind of improved construction for drawing the core box or pattern from the sand; also to so construct apparatus of this kind as to enable it to be placed into operative relation to a jolter so that a sand container can be moved with the minimum loss of time from the jolter to the means for drawing the core box or pattern from the core or mold; also to provide apparatus oi this kind with pivoted arms for supporting a sand container, which may be swung into and out of operat ve positions;
also to provide supporting members or tables molds. v

The apparatus is provided with a base A which rests on a floor or other suitable support a. Thebase is preferably arranged in operative relation to olter having a base portion B and a vertically movable table or platform Z) on which the core boxes or other sand forming devices are placed for the purpose of shaking or j'olting the sand to pack the same in the containers. The jolter may be of any suitahle or desired'construction and of itself forms no part of this invention. The apparatus includes an upright" frame member or column 1] which i's preferably of hollow cylindrical iorm an d is suitably secured on the base in any desired maiiner. In the construction shown, the column is provided at its lower end with a collar (3 which may be secured to the base A by means of bolts 0 or the like.
The apparatus is provided with suitable means for supporting 'a core box or other forming member D either in its upright position in which the boX can be filled with sand, or in its inverted position in Whiohthe boX can be withdrawn from the core. The core box supporting means are preferably constructed so as to be moved into and out of an operative position over the jolter platform Z). In the construction shown for this purpose, two core-box supporting arms E are provided which are suitably pivoted on the frame 7 A so as to swingin a substantially horizontal plane into their operative positions over the jolter,
or to swing in opposite directions to the sides of the jolter. The arms E are pivoted to swing about a bolt or pivot member 6 suitably secured on a part of the base A, the pivot member being-arranged, in the construction shown, at the base of the column C. The arms have straight portions 6 adjacent to their inner pivoted ends, and offset portions 6 at their outer ends, on which the supports for the core boxes are mounted. The straight portions 6 of the arms are preferably supported intermediate of their ends on an arc-shaped upwardly extending projection or track 6 formed on the base A. The supporting arms may be of any other suitable construction or, if desired, only one supporting arm may be used.
The means on the ends of the arms E for supporting the cores or core boxes may be of any suitable kind but are preferably made so as to adapt themselves to core boxes of irregular shapes. The means shown in the construction illustrated include core supports or landings F which are pivoted at f on posts or parts 7" secured on the arms E. Each of the posts is preferably provided with a lower threaded portion extending through a slot f formed in the end of the arm E and is held in the desired position by any suitable means, such for example as nuts f f by means of which the post can be adjusted vertically as may be desired, or lengthwise of the slot F. In the construction shown, the upper end f of each post is substantially rectangular in cross-section and extends into a slot f in the core support or landing F. By means of this construction the core box supports or landings may assume inclined positions 'as shown in Fig. 3, or horizontal positions as shown in the other figures, so that the apparatus is adapted to operate in connection with core boxes of irregular shapes, for example with core boxes having inclined top portions, as shown in Fig. 3. In order to hold the core supports or landings in the desired positions, suitable means are provided for resisting the movement of the core supports about their pivots. For this purpose, in the construction shown, a spring G is provided for each support, the ends of the springs being adapted to engage serrated portions 9 of the supports for holding the same in adjusted positions and for resisting the movement of the supports relatively to the spring. In this manner the core box supports will be yieldingly held in any position which they assume when the core box is placed thereon. The springs may be held in operative relation to the core box supports in any suitable manner, being provided in the construction shown with rectangular slotted portions 9 through which the upper portion 7 of the post f extends.
The means for drawing the core boxes from the cores are mounted on the column,
or upright frame members C and are preferably constructed as follows:
The upper portion of the column C is provided with a forwardly extending part or projection H having at its front end upright guide bearings h h in which a sliding rod or member if of the core box drawing device is arranged. The slide rod k is held against turning by any suitable means, the rod shown in the drawings being made square or rectangular in cross-section and the guide bearings h h being also square or rectangu lar. The slide rod h is provided at its lower end with suitable holding means for the core boxes, a holder I being provided in the construction shown, which is suitably secured to the bottom of the sliding member 72, and which is preferably provided with a roller or sheave I which is adapted to bear against the upright column C to prevent the slide rod h2 from binding in the bearings.
The core box holder I is provided with suitable means for mounting the core box on the holder, in such a manner that the core box may either be held in upright position in which the sand may be packed in the box, or in inverted position to permit the core box to be withdrawn fromthe core. The holding means for the core box are also preferably so constructed thatthe core box can be inverted while the same is supported on the holder and with means forholding the core box in proper alinement with the slide red It so that the core box can be accurately withdrawn from the core. In the construction shown for this purpose, the core box holder is provided with a socket or hole adapted to receive a holding arm K which may be suitably attached to thecore box. The holding arm is provided at its inner end with a portion Z: of substantially circular cross-section which is adapted to enter into a portion i of the socket of similar cross-section, thus enabling the core box to be swung about the axis of the arm K to place the core box either into an inverted or an upright position. The means for holcb ing. the arm K in either upright or inverted positions may be of any suitable construction, the holding arm shown being provided for this purpose with an intermediate por tion is" of substantially square or rectangular cross-section and adapted to engage with a portion of similar cross-section at the outer end of the core box holder I. By means of this construction the core box may be readily swung about the axis of the holding arm K by withdrawing the holding arm from the socket I until the square or rectangular por tion of the arm is out of engagement with the corresponding part of the socket. When the core box is in the correct upright or inverted position, the core box is pushed to inthe socket, which will hold the core box against movement. K- represents a set screw arranged in the core box holder and adapted to engage the arm K to hold the same in the socket in case it is not desired to use the apparatus for inverting the core box. Any other means may be provided for holding the arm K so that the core box can be accurately held either in upright or inverted position.
The outer end of the holding arm may be connected with the core box in any suitable manner. In the construction shown in the drawings, the holding arm is detaehably connected with the core box, being for this purpose provided with a wedge-shaped portion k adapted to engage in a similar por tion of a socket member 10 which is suitably secured on the core box. The socket member is so secured to the core box that when the holding arm K is in engagement with the socket member the sides of the core box will he alined with the slide rod 71?, so that the core box can be accurately drawn from the core. 7
The weight of the core box and the core box holder is preferably counterbalanced so that very little effort is required to draw the core box from the core. For this purpose a weight L is provided which is preferably arranged within the eolumnC. This weight is connected by a cable or belt Z to the core box holder I, the belt passing over the pulleys or sheaves Z Z which are pivoted in the projection II of the column. Any other means for counterbalancing the weight of the core box and core box holder maybe employed.
M represents a vibrator of any suitable kind which is preferably mounted on the core box holder I and which may be actu-- ated by the operator in drawing the box from the core so as to loosen the box from the core, the vibrations being transmitted from the core box holder I through the holding arm K to the core box. This vibrator may be of any well known or desired construction and of itself constitutes no part of this invention.
By mrans of the apparatus described the core box is filled with sand and placed on the jolter platform 7). Thejolter packs the sand in the core box D, which may then be raised and placed on the holding arm K by inserting the wedge-shaped portion 70 thereof into the socket k of the core box. The supporting arms E are then swung inwardly over the olter into a position to receive the core box. A cover 01 is placed on the core box and the arm K is drawn out so as to disengage the intermediate portion 70 therebrator M is then actuated and the core box 1s drawn upwardly away from the core. No
skill is required in withdrawing the core box from the core since it is only necessary to move the core box upwardly, the slide rod h serving to properly guide the core box in its movement relatively to the core.
The apparatus for drawing the core boxes from the cores need not be used in connection with the jolt-er, and if desired the apparatus an be used only for drawing core boxes from the cores, in which case the arms Eremain at all times in the positions shown in full lines in Fig. 2.
Since no particular skill is required to make cores or molds by usingthe apparatus described, the services of high priced core makers can be dispensed with and the cores or the like, the combination with a corebox,

3. In an apparatus for use in forming sand or the like, the combination with a forming device, of a drawing member secured to said forming device, and a. supporting member whiehis pivoted to swing into operative relation to said drawing memher, and to swing to one side of the path of n'iovement of said drawing member, one of said members being movable relatively to theother member to cause the forming device to be withdrawn from the core.
i. In an apparatus for use in forming sand or the like, the combination with a sand forming device, of a drawing member movable substantially in a straight line and secured to said forming device, said drawing member guiding said forming device while the same is being drawn from the sand, and a pair of supporting arms adapted to swing into positions to receive the formed sand from said drawing member and into positions out of operative relation to said drawing member.
5. In an apparatus for use in making cores or thelike, the combination with a core box, of a holder secured to said core box, a part on said holder adapted to be turnedto permit the core box to be inverted, and means for moving said-holder with said core box when inverted in a substantially straight line to draw the core box from the core.
6. In an apparatus for use in making cores or the like, the combination with a core box, of a drawing member, a member on said drawing member which is secured to said core box and which is ad'aptedto be turned to enable the core box to be inverted and means for raising said drawing member and the core box when inverted for drawing said box from the core.
7. In an apparatus for use in making cores or the like, the combination with a core box, of a drawing member movable substantially in a straight line and secured to said core box to guide said core box when the same is being withdrawn from a core, and a holding arm for said core' box pivotally mounted on said drawing member and by means of which said core box may be inverted whereby the drawing member when being raised draws the core box from the core. 7
8. In an apparatus for use in making cores or the like, the combination of a drawing member movable substantially in a straight line and adapted to draw a core box from a core, a holding arm for said core box pivotally mounted on said drawing member and by means of which said core box may be inverted, and guide means for securing said holding arm in positions to hold said core box positively either in an upright or an in verted position.
9. In an apparatus for use in making cores or the like, the combination of a drawing member movable substantially in a straight line and adapted to draw a core box from a core, a holding arm having a substantially cylindrical portion journaled in a corresponding bearing in said drawing member, and guide parts on said holding arm adapted to engage said drawing member to hold a core box positively in upright and inverted positions.
10. In an apparatus for making cores or the like, the combination of a drawing member movable substantially in a straight line, a core box supporting arm which is pivotally mounted on said drawing member, and a rectangular portion onsaid arm adaptedto enter into a correspondingly shapedhole in said drawing member for holding said core box in either an upright or an inverted position.
11. In an apparatus for making cores or the like, the combination of a core box supporting arm which ismovablesubstantially in a straight line, means for permitting said arm to be swung toplace said core box into an upright or an inverted position, and means for attachinga corebox to said arm so that the core box-is' supported from said arm when vinverted, said arm when-being raised drawing said core-box from said core.
12. In an apparatus-for making cores or the like, the combination of a core box supporting arm which is movable substantially in a straight line, means for permitting said arm'to be swung-to place said core box into an upright or an inverted position, and a member-on said core box adapted to receive a partof said arm for securing the core box to said arm.
13. In an apparatus forforming sand or the like,-the combination with a sand forming device, of a supporting arm for said device which is movable substantially in a straight line, said arm having a substantially wed e-shaped end portion, and a securing device on said forming device to'which said wedge-shaped portion of the arm can be se cured.
14. In an apparatus for use in making cores or the like, the combination of a drawing member, a holding arm arranged on said drawing member and adapted to support a core box,'sa'id holding arm having a substantially cylindrical port-ion engaging a corresponding portion in said drawing member, and a substantially rectangular portion adapted to engage a corresponding portion of said drawing member to hold said core box either in an upright or an inverted position.
15. In an apparatus for use in forming sand, the combination with a sand forming device, of a frame having an upright portion, a drawing member movable substantially in a straight line and adapted to draw said forming device from the sand, a guide bearing on said frame for said drawing member, means for supporting said forming device on said drawing member at one side of said bearing, and a roller on said drawing member at the opposite side of said bearing and engaging the upright portion of said frame to prevent said drawing member from binding in said guide means.
16. In an apparatus for use in forming sand, the combination with a sand forming device, of a frame having a hollow upright portion, a drawing member movable substantiallyin a straight line and adapted to draw said forming device from the sand, a guide bearing on said frame for said drawing member, means "for supporting said forming device on said drawing member at one side of said bearing, a counterbalance weight on said hollow frame portion, and means on said drawing member at the opposite side of said bearing and engaging said hollow frame portion for supporting said drawing member to keep the same from binding in said bearing.
17. In an apparatus for use in forming sand or the like, the combination with a sand forming device,.of a drawing member movable substantially in a straight line and adapted to draw said forming device from the sand, and vibrating means mounted on said drawing member, the vibrations being transmitted from said drawing member to said forming device.

Inan apparatus for use in forming sand or the like, the combination with a sand forming device, of a drawing member movable substantially in a straight line and adapted to draw said forming device from the sand, an arm mounted on said drawing member and connected with said forming device, said arm being movable to support said forming device in difi'erent positions, and a vibrator mounted on said drawing member.

In an apparatus for use in forming sand or the like, the combination with a sand 7 forming device, of a drawing member movable substantially in a straight line and adapted to draw said forming device from the sand, a jolter arranged below said drawing member, and a member for supporting the formed sand which is movable into and out of a position above said j olter to receive the sand from said drawing member.

In an apparatus for use in forming sand or the like, the combination with a sand forming device, of a drawing member movable substantially in a straight line and adapted to draw said forming device from the sand, a jolter arranged below said drawing member, and a pair of swinging arms mounted on said frame and adapted to be moved into a position above said jolter to receive the formed sand from said drawing member.
21. In an apparatus for use in forming sand, the combination with a frame, a drawing member movable substantially in a straight line and guided on said frame, a supporting arm pivoted at its inner end on said frame and having an outer end adapted to swing into and out of a position under- 'neath said drawing member, and a projection on said frame for supporting said arm intermediate of the ends thereof.

In an apparatus for use in forming sand, the combination with -a forming device, of a frame, a drawing member for drawing said forming device from the sand, a jolter arranged in proximity to said frame, and arms pivoted on said frame and movable into and out of position to receive tllGfOlIl'lBCl sand.

In an apparatus for use in forming sand, the combination of a sand forming device, of a drawing member adapted to draw said forming device from the sand, arms adapted to swing into a position under said drawing member to receive the sand, and supports for the formed sand mounted on said arms and adapted to be moved by the forming device into different inclined positions.

In an apparatus for use in forming sand, the combination of. a sand forming device, of a drawing member adapted to draw said forming device from the sand, a member for supporting the sand which is mov able into and out of operative relation to said drawing member, and a support pivotally mounted on said supporting member and adapted to swing into a position to conform to the shape of the sand forming de vice.
25. In an apparatus for use in forming sand, the combination of a sand forming device, of a; drawing member adapted to draw said forming device from the sand, a mem ber for supporting the sand which is movable into and out of operative relation to said drawing member, a support pivotally mounted on said supporting member, and means for yieldingly holding said support in any position in which the same is placed when receiving the sand.

In an apparatus for use in forming sand, the combination of a sand forming device, of a drawing member adapted to draw said forming device from the sand, a member for supporting the sand which is movable into and out of operative relation to said drawing member, a support pivotally mounted on said supporting member, means for yieldingly holding said support in any position which the same is placed whenreceiving the sand, and means for adjusting said support relatively to said supporting member.
27. In an apparatus for use in forming sand, the combination with a sand forming device, of a drawing member adapted to draw said device from the sand, a pair of.
