Be it known that 1, WILLIAM LASKER,
a citizen of the, United States, residing in borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Interlocking Release Mechanism for Keyboards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to interlocking mechanism adapted for use with card perforating machines, typewriting machines,
and the like for preventing the actuation of more than one key at a time, and the invention also relates to means for at will releasing and rendering said mechanism inoperative.
While my invention is not limited in its application to card perforating machines, it is herein illustrated andd'escribed in connection with such a machine such as is described in my copending applications, Se-
rial No. 116,597, filed August 26th, 1916, and
Serial No. 159,054, filed April 2nd, 1917.
Herein, I describe minute details of the invention, but it is noted that the invention is not limited to these details, since the details of construction and combination may be greatly varied without departing from the scope of my invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing showing I by way of example one of many possible emterlocking mechanism.
In my above mentioned copending applications there is shown a machine provided with a carriage, a keyboard, a punch setting mechanism operatively connected to the keyboard, an escapement for the punch carriage, and means for controlling the movements of 'the punches and carriage, and the rails on which said carriage moves. I
In the present speclficatlon, descrlptlon a carriage 10, similar to the one-described in said applications, comprising side-plates 11, and a supporting frame 12 provided with flanged wheels 14 for supporting the same on suitable track rails such as shown in said applications. Upon the upper parts of said slde-plates 11, is mounted, a fixed comb plate 15, upon which is mounted a recessed block 16, 1n the recesses of which are disposed plunger pins 18 (Fig. 4), held in place by means of cover plate 19, suitably secured to the top of the recessed plate.
. Transv'ersely mounted between the plates 11, is a crank-shaft 21, on which are mounted a plurality of bell-cranks 22, all but three of which are omitted for purposes of clearer illustration. The upper arms 24 of the bellcranks are received between the teeth of the comb plate 15, and are adapted to be engaged and moved by theplunger pins 18, which plunger pins are actuated by flexible pushed cables, not shown herein, illustrated and described in said copending applications.
Certain of the lower arms 25 of said bellcranks have pivoted thereto punch operating rods 26, adapted to operate punch pins not shown herein, said lower arms and operating rods are held in normal upper position by means of suitable-v springs 28. One of said lower arms 30 is connected by means of a slot and pin connection 31, 32, to means for controlling the escapement wheel 35 carried on the stub shaft 36 (Fig. 2). oted upon screws 48, carried on the upper part of the comb plate 40, are looking levers 49, each formed with a reduced intermediate portion 50, normally disposed between said The lower ends of said locking levers are formed into enlarged heads forming inclined shoulders 52 normally disposed beneath said lower arms and adapted to be contacted and pushed aside by the first of said lower arms which is depressed, whereby the lower arm heads (F ig. 3) thereby positively holding said locking levers out of their normal posi tion and in the laterally inclined position shown in Fig. 3. When the locking levers are in the position shown in Fig. 3 any de pressing of any other lower arm of said bellcrank causes such arm to be engaged and stopped by the inclined shoulder 52 adjacent thereto, thereby preventing the further depression of such arm and the operation of the punch mechanism or other mechanism operated thereby.
Sometimes, however, it is desired to render inoperative the interlocking mechanism just described, and a description of the means for wardly projecting pin 7 0 carried by the handle 64. Upon the movable collar 62 there is fixed a lever arm 72 (Fig. 4), connected b means of a link .73 to one of the roc arms 43.
It will be seen that when the handle 64 is moved in the direction of the arrow of Fig.
1, the inwardly projecting pin 7 0 engages the movable pin 69, causing the lever arm 72- to move in the direction of the arrow of Fig. 4, thereby causing the depression of the link 73 the rock arms 43 and the comb plate 40, and the lowering of the locking levers 49 to the position shown by the dotted lines of Fig. 2. This movement causes the inclined shoulders 52 to be moved to assume a position lower" than the lower limit of movement of the lower arms of the bell-cranks, thereby preventingany lateral movement of any of the locking levers 49', by the lower arms when any of said lower arms is depressed.
Movement of the handle 64 in a direction opposite to the .direction of the arrow of" Fig. 1, causes the pin to engage the fixed pin 68,- whereby movement may be communicated to the punch carriage as a whole, to I move the same back against the tension of its operating spring, not shown herein. The operation of the mechanism may be briefly summarized as follows:

2. In an interlocking mechanism, the combination of a plurality of lever arms; a
movable member disposed across said arms;
' leversand causes the inclined shoulders 52 of the locking levers to dispose themselves and locking levers pivoted to said member and disposed between the arms and having inclined shoulders at their free ends.
3. In an interlocking release mechanism,

In an interlocking release mechanism, the combination of a frame; a vertically movable comb plate mounted therein; movable arm's disposed between the teeth of the comb plate; locking levers pivoted ,to the upper part of the comb plate and having reduced intermediate portions disposed between said arms, and inclined shoulders disposed-beneath the arms; a rocking handle; and an operative connection. between the handle and the comb plate.
8. In an interlocking release mechanism, the combination of a carriage frame provided with vertical side slots; a vertically disposed comb plate having its ends projecting through said slots; a crank shaft mounted in said frame; punch operating bell cranks mounted on said shaft and comprising upper arms, and lower arms disposed between the teeth of said comb plate; a
lunger block on said frame; plunger pins 1n said block and adapted to engage and move said upper arms; locking levers pivoted to the upper part of said comb plate and having intermediate portions disposed between said lower arms, and inclined shoulders disposed beneath said lower arms; a rock shaft on said frame; rock levers thereon en aging the ends of the comb plate; a stu -shaft; a handle loosely mounted thereon; a collar on the stub-shaft adapted to be moved by said handle; and a connection between the collar and one of the rock levers.
9. In an interlocking release mechanism, the combination of a carriage frame comprising side plates, each provided with a on said fixed comb plate; plunger pins in the recesses "of said. block and adapted to engage and move said upper arms; locking levers pivoted to the upper part of said movable comb-plate and having reduced intermediate portions disposed between said lower arms and inclined shoulders disposed beneath said lower arms; punch operating rods pivotally carried on the free ends of said lower arms; a rock-shaft passed through said side-plates; rock-levers fixed on said shaft and engaging in the recesses of said reduced ends; a stub-shaft mounted on said carriage frame; a fixed collar fixed on said stub-shaft-and provided. with a radial in; a movable collar on said stub-shaft provided with a radial pin and a lever arm; a link between said lever arm and said rock lever; and a handle loosely mounted on said stub-shaft and provided with a laterally projecting pin disposed between said radial ins. p WILLIAM W.
