PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 3, 1919.
Application filed June 16, 1917, Serial No. 175,133. Renewed October 28, 1918. Serial No. 260,066.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEY S. JACKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sabinal, in the county of Uva-lde and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in plows and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character of a disk-type and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein ground engaging elements are arranged in pairs and wherein the ground engaging elements of each pair are longitudinally spaced and so arranged as to throw the earth in opposite directions in order to effectively open a furrow.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved plow whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view partly in top plan and partly in section illustrating a plow constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and 1 Fig. 2 is a view in top plan with a portion in section showing certain parts of the device arranged in a second position.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings 1 denotes a transverse beam supported in a conventional manner by the wheels 2, said wheels being adapted to ride or travel in the furrows formed by the machine as will hereinafter be more fully set forth. 3 denotes a front or forward cross beam provided with a caster wheel 4. preferably positioned in a plane midway between the wheels 2 hereinbefore referred to.
Interposed between the beams 1 and 3 are the side beams 5 substantially V-shaped in top plan and having their terminalsangularly disposed at 6 to contact with the inner faces of the beams 1 and 3. Each of the angular portions 6 is provided with a longitudinal series of openings 7 adapted to register with certain of the longitudinally spaced openings 8 formed in the members 1 and 3 at opposite sides of the centers thereof. Disposed through the registering, openings 6 and 8 are the clamping bolts 9. By this arrangement it will be self-evident that the side beams 5 may be readily and conveniently adjusted longitudinally of the beams 1 and 3 in order to regulate distance between sa d side beams in accordance with the requlrements of practice. Operatively engaged with each of the beams 5 at opposite sides of its apex are the ground engaging members 10 herein disclosed as disks and the disks 10 of each of the side beams 5 are substantially in longitudinal alinement. The formation of the side beams are such as to cause the ground engaging members at one end to throw the dirt in a direction opposite to the ground engaging members at the opposite end portion thereof.
As disclosed in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings the apices of the side beams 5 are disposed outwardly so that the forward ground engaging members 10 will throw the earth outwardly while the rear ground engaging members 10 serve to throw the earth inwardly. As illustrated in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings, the apices of the side members 5 are disposed inwardly so that the forward ground eugaging members throw the earth inwardly while the rear ground engaging members throw the earth outwardly. It is to be understood that the ground engaging members 10 are arranged at all times forwardly of the side beams 5 when considered in connection with the V-shaped formation of said side beams. It is also to be understood that the ground engaging members 10 are capable of adjustment longitudinally of the side beams, as particularly illustrated at 11 in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings. The forwardor front beam 3 has also secured thereto a draft pole 12 or other hitching means, said pole being positioned midway of the side beams 5 and in alinement with the caster wheel 4.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a plow constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit'thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my in vention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
A device of the character described comprising a rear transverse beam, a forward transverse beam, reversible side beams interposed between said transverse beams, each of said side beams being substantially V- shaped in form and having their end portions detachably engaged with the front and rear transverse beams whereby the same may be reversed, and a rotatable ground working member carried by each of the side beams at opposite sides of the apex thereof and at points substantially in alinement longitudinally of the device, the axis of rotation of each of said ground working members being at right angles to the adjacent portion of the beam, one of said ground working members being positioned outwardly of the side beam, and a second member being positioned inwardly of the side beam.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
