FURRUW MARKER.

I IIIIII @noem/tor Ffedzam/WZ 33? waw I l i SH01/wud FRED RUDOLPH nuivrrnr., ornrcnrrnnn, mano.
Funnow-,Manxnay `Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedlMay 6,
` Application filed November 4, 1918. Serial No. 261,052.5.`
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRED R. RUMPEL, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Richfield, in the county of Lincoln and Etate of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furrow-Markers, of which the followin is aspecification.
This invention re ates toharrows and diggers, and more especially -it isa furrow marker which when `drawn acrossy the `field isadapted to mark the samewith lines along which it is to be subsequently plowed.
The invention consists of a simple machine mounted on wheels and having markers or shovels spaced a distance equal to that which it is intended l to have between the furrows, and means for raising) and lowy ering the shovels so that they can e put out of use, as when the machine is drawn to the i field and back, or can be put into use when the machine is at work.
Details of structure are set forth in the following specification and claims, and shown in the drawing, wherein- Figure l is a side view and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the machine complete.
Fig. 3 is a of the pivots'.
The main axle 1 is preferably made of angle iron carrying spindles 2 at its extremities on which are journaled a pair of wheels 3. The tongue L1 is secured upon the axle at its center and braced by hounds 5, and the seat 6 is mounted in a standard 7 rising from the tongue. The numeral 8 designates a doubletree to which the draft is applied, and the sin letrees are attached to it as usual.
ecured to the upright lower leaf of the axle are plates 10 each havin a pair of outstanding ears 11 between w ich on a bolt 12 is pivoted an eye 13 at the front end of a bar 111. The rear ends of the several bars are secured as by rivets 15 across a beam 16 which alsomay be of angle iron, as seen in Fig. 1. Standards 17 are secured to the rear face of said beam and carry shovels or markers 18 at their lower ends, and braces 19 conneet the standards with their respective bars to maintain these elements in rigid relation and at about right angles to each other.
perspective view showing one The shovels or markers are spaced a distance ,apart equal to the distance which it is desired to have between the furrows in the lield being treated.
`Pivoteduat 20 to one side of the tongue 4 is a lever2-1 havin a thumb latch 22 actuat- `ing a dog 23 whic engages atoothed sector 24e carried by the tongue, so that thelever will remain `in whatever position it is adjusted by the operator `who can reach it fromjhis position in the seat` 6. The lever `is-conne`ctedv with the` `beam 16 `by a `rod 25, the rod being attached` to a lever atthepoint `26above the pivot 20, and `the lever is also connected with the beam by a lower rod `27, attached to Ithe lower end of theleveriat the 'point 28. `The rear ends of bothl these rods are connected `with the beam 16` at thepoint 29 as best seen in Fig. 2. `The result ofthis construction is that when the lever is moved in one direction or the other, the entire `beam 16 and all parts attached thereto are raised` around the pivots ,w
12 or lowered. Thus the shovels or markers 18 are caused to rise out of Ithe ground or descend into it according to the wishes of the operator. y
While I have described this device as intended for scratching the earth, it is possible that the shovels 18 could be in the form of cultivator blades which will enter the earth and do cultivating between rows or furrows, but in that case the machine would have to be driven over ground which is already planted and would of course have to be properly guided so that the shovels would come between the furrows instead of into them.
The foregoing description and drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, etc., as may prove expedient andfalll within the scope of the appended claims.
I-Iaving fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Iletters Patent, is
1. The herein described land marker coinprising an axle mounted on wheels and having a tongue projecting forward from it, a plurality of bars pivoted at their front ends to said axle, a beam rigidly connecting their rear ends, a plurality of standards extending from this beam and carrying shovels, a lever 'pivoted to and crossing ythe tongue, a seat rising from the latter adjacent the lever,
and connections between the lever above and below its pivot and the beam for raising and lowering the latter.
2. The herein described land marker comprising an axle mounted on wheels and having a tongue projecting forwardfrom it, a
plurality of bars pivoted at their front ends "to said vaxle, a beam rigidly connecting their rear ends, a plurality of standards extending from this beam and carrying shovels, a
toothedseetor fast on said tongue, a lever beam, the whole for use substantially as described.`
3. In a land marker, the combination with an axle of L-iron having spindles at its ex- "tremities, wheels mounted thereon, a tongue extending'forward from said axle, and a hand lever pivotally mounted on said tongue;
of a series of plates connected with the rear leaf of said axle and each having a pair of i Copiesof this patent may be obtained for ve cents` each, by addressing Washington, D. 0.
projectingears, a series of bars having eyes at their front ends passing between the ears of a pair, pivot bolts through said ears and eyes, a beam connecting the rear ends of said bars, standards extending rigidly from said beam and carrying markers, and connections between said beam and lever, for the purpose set forth.
. il. In a land marker, the combination with an axle havinging wheels mounted on its extremities, a tongue projecting forward from said axle and a lever pivoted to said tongue; of a series of standards carrying markers, a transverse beam by` which said standards are supported, a plurality of bars connected to said beam and leading to the axle, pivotal connections between their front ends and saidaxle, braces connecting the bars with the standards, and connections between the beam and lever, Jorthe purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
