Be it known that I, WILL T. KRAUSE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Dinuba, in the fyounty of Tulare and rState of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pumps of the eentrifugal or impeller type of a character adapted to be suspended in well casings, the movable member of which rotates in a horizontal plane and acts to force the water npwardly through the well casing.
The present invention provides a pump of this character possessing several important advantages, in that it embodies a self contained structure adapted to be lowered into a conventional well casing and adapted to form a substantially fluid tight joint therewith' at any desired point in the height of the well easing, such point being determinable from the surface of the ground, so that the pumps may be utilized in well casings that are already in place.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pump of this character discharging at a plurality of points about the periphery of the impeller whereby resistance to the movement of the water is decreased, while at the same time the impeller is protected to a material extent from the back wash or thrust of the column of water thereabove.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows.

Referring to the drawings and particularly to Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, 5 designates a well casing of conventional form. It will be noted that one of the important features of Specification of Letters Patent.

the invention is that this casing is caused to serve both as a suction and discharge pipe for the pump. The pump proper comprises a cylinder 7 having a bottom 8 that is provided with an intake collar 9. Secured to the Walls of this cylinder by ears 10 is a horizontal plate 11 of smaller diameter than the cylinder7 which lies in spaced relation to the bottom 8 and provides a chamber 12 within which the impeller or runner 13 is mounted for rotation. The impeller is provided with blades 14 that are of such shape as to throw the water outwardly when the impeller is rotated. Rotation of the impeller is effected by shafts 15 and 16 that are preferably connected by a universal joint 1i'. The shaft 15 has a bearing at 18 in the plate 11 and the shaft 16 is preferably suspended upon a thrust bearing such as that indicated at 19 in Fig. 5 by which bearing the shafts 15 and 16 and the impeller are held in such suspension as to relieve all friction between the bottom of the impeller and the plate 8.
The impeller comprises the top'plate 13, bottom plate 20 and an intake collar 21 which projects through the collar 9 of the plate 8, it being understood that the blades 14 are disposed between the plates 13 and 20. A ring 22 is secured by screws 23, or other suitable fastening devices, to the plate 8 and this ring in turn has secured thereto by screws 24, or other suitable fastening devices, a` leather or other iiexible packing ring 25. Strips 26 having out-turned lower ends 27 project beneath a spread-ring 28, which has its outer face inclined at 29. Suspension rods 30 have their lower ends engaged with ears 31 formed upon the spread-ring 28 and the upper portions of these suspension rods pass through brackets 32 that may be supported in any desired way or in any desired position adjacent the top of the well casing. I have in the present invention shown them as being carried by a ring 33.
When the pump is lowered into the well, the rings 22 and 28 move downwardly togetheruntil the suspension rods 30 reach the limit of their movement or until the angular ends 34 of said rods engage the ears 32, whereupon further downward movement of the suspension rods is rendered impossible and the rin 28 is brought to a stop. 5. The combination with a Well casing of a pump cylinder of cup like formation of such size as to fit snugly therein, a plate disposed horizontally in said cylinder and of smaller diameter than the cylinder to thereby leave a discharge outlet about the edge of the plate, a rotary impeller disposed beneath said plate, an intake collar upon the impeller projecting through the bottom of the pump cylinder, a ring carried by the bottom of the pump cylinder, a flexible packing ring carried by the first named ring, a Spreader ring with which the packing ring coacts, vertically extending rods by Which the spreader ring is supported and means for permitting a limited downward movement of said rods and preventing their further movement after such limited downward movement.
6. The combination with a Well casing of a pump structure comprising tWo parts connected to be lowered together into the well casing but capable of limited relative movement, means for holding one of said parts against further movement after a predetermined downward movement into the well casing and means operable under the Weight of the pump and acting against the said held part to form a fluid tight joint with the Wall of the casing.
