CARBURETER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JESSE G. VINCENT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Detroit, Wayne county, State of Michi an, have invented certain new and useful mprovenients in Carbureters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hydrocarbon motors,land particularly to the carburetor or intake passages thereof.
The salient object of the invention is to provide a carbureter particularly of the horizontal mixing chamber type with means for obtaining rich mixture for starting or for operating va cold motor.
This and other objects and the novel fcatures of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings which forni a part of this specification, and in which:-
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a carbureter ,embodying the invention;

Referrin to the drawings, 10 represents the vbody o? a carbureter in which is a mixing chamber ll having an inlet 12 and an outletrl. As shown the mixing chamber is horizontally .arranged and the inlet and outlet are at opposite ends thereof and provided with a choke valve 14 for the inlet and a throttle valve 15 for the outlet. These valves may be provided with suitable means for manual control. i
Means for supplying liquid fuel to the carbureter are provided in the form of a nozzle lred from theusual loat chamber (not shown) through a pipe 17, the float mechanism operating to feed the fuel to the nozzle at .the desired level therein. Alsothe nozzle ma be raised and lowered manually by the rac and pinion mechanism 16 operated by arm 16 to. vary the position of the nozzle outlet relative to the gasolene level in the oat chamber.
Control of the nozzle opening 18 may be by automatic means such as a piston 19 operating in a cylinder 20 above the nozzle, a needle 21 being suspended from the-piston and operatin in the nozzle. Fixed in the base of the mlxing chamber by bolts 40 is a guide member 41 having an opening 42 in the base plate through which the fuel nozzle Specification of Letters Patent.

16 extends and an opening 43 in the top plate through which the needle 21 extends. The top plate is circular in outline and with the cylinder 20 forms an annular guideway 44 in which the piston 19 reciprocates. The needle is provided with a tapered longitudi- .nal slot 21 which is larger at its lower end,
so that as the needle is raised by the piston the opening 18 in the nozzle is opened wider to permit 'more gasolene to flow. The piston lowers by gravity and is raised by suction or the creation Aof a partial vacuum in the upper part of the cylinders 2() through the medium of a conduit or pipe 22 which connects the cylinder above the piston with the chamber 11. Thus as suction occurs in the mixing chamber due to the action of the inotor pistons the piston 19 is raised and the needle 21 opens the nozzle to admit more fuel. The piston 19 is also provided with skirts 23 and 24 which control the passage of air .through the chamber past the nozzle.
In the operation of the'carbure'ter when the motor is to be started, particularly when it is cold, the choke valve 14 is partly or nearly closed and the motor turned over or cranked by hand or other power with the throttle valve partly open. `This creates a suction or partial vacuum in the mixing chamber 11 which draws up Athe piston 19 and opens the nozzle 16 ermitting gasolenc or other liquid fuel to` e drawn into the mixing chamber. Most of this however falls to the bottom of the chamber and the small amount of air entering the chamber passes ,oventhe asolene and very little of'th'e latter is'piced up and' carried tothe motor. For the purpose of spreading or diffusing this aso ene that is sucked into the chamber t e latter is provided with a comparatively small` air opening 25 substantially at its lowest point and somewhere between the throttle valve and the inlet 12 so that air will be drawn into the chamber through. the gasolene that collects in the bottom of the chamber and cause the gasolene to be sprayed onto the walls of the chamber as fast as its collects. This sprayin of the gasolene permits it to be more readi y picked up by and mixed with the air and carried into the motor cylinders in the form of a rich combustible mixture which will explode in the motor.
For the purpose of assisting in collecting the gasolene in the mixing chamber so that it may be more effectively s read by the air entering the opening 25, a uel catch basin 26 is provided being shown in the form of a depression in the bottom of the chamber. The opening 25 is arranged in the bottom of the basin so that the air Wil] be drawn through the greatest body of gasolene. As shown, the basin 26 is arranged between the nozzle 16 and the throttle valve in the horizontal mixing chamber illustrated in the drawings.
In Fig. 3 the opening 25 is at the end of a channel 27 formed in the body of the carburetor and having itsl inlet end 28 above the lower art of the chamber 11.
If it is esired to more closely control the normal action of the carbureter after the motor is started than would be permitted by leaving the opening 25 open, the .latter may be closed by a valve 29 which may be interconnected, as shown, with the choke valve 14 so that as the latter is opened after the motor starts or is warmed up the valve Qi) will close the opening 25. This int/ercon` nection is shown as comprising a link 3() on the valve 29 and an arm 31 on the valve 14, the valve 29 being spring pressed toward the left by spring 82 so that it will normally rest with the stop 33 against the body of the carbureter thereby closing the opening 25, and the link 30 having a hooked end 34 which may be engaged by the end of the arm 31 as the valve 14 reaches the end of its closing movement to thereby draw the valve 29 against the action of its sprin and open the air opening" 25. IVhen the c oke valve 14 is again opened the valve 29 of course returns to its normal closed position.
The forms of the invention Shovvn are illustrative only and various changes may be made without departing from the spirit or sccpe of the invention.

l, A carburete1 comprising a Substantially horizontal mixing chamber, having a depression adapted to collect unused liquid fuel, said depression having an air opening entering its bottom, a fuel supply means in said chamber at one side of said depression, a throttle valve at the other side of said depression, a choke valve ada ted to restrict the entry of air to Said chamber, and means tonnected to said choke valve for closing said air opening as the choke valve is opened and vice versa.
2. A carbureter eomprisin a substantially horizontal mixing cham er, having a depression adapted to collect unused liquid fuel, said depression having an air opening entering its bottom, a fuel supply means in said chamber at one side of said de ression, a throttle valve at the other side o said depression, a choke valve adapted to restrict the entry of air to said Chamber, a valve for said air opening and operating means coinmon to said choke valve and said air opening valve.
3. A carbureter comprising a substan` tially horizontal miXin chamber, a throttleI valve, a fuel nozzle, a e oke valve, a depression in said chamber intermediate said throttle valve and fuel nozzle adapted to collect unused fuel, an air passage entering the boitom of said depression, said passage having its inlet above the bottom of the depression, and means for opening said air passage when said choke valve is closed so that air Will be drawn into the chamber through the gasolene collected in the depression and cause the gasolene lo be sprayed onto the Walls of the chamber.
4. A carbureter comprising a substantially horizontal mixing chamber, a throttle valve, a fuel nozzle, a choke valve, a depression in said chamber intermediate Asaid throttle valve and fuel nozzle adapted to collect unused fuel, and having an air opening at the bottom, and means for closing Said opening when the choke valve is open and for opening the opening when the choke valve is closed, thereby increasing the air supply and spraying the gasolene coliected in the depression onto the walls of the chamber.
