Description
- able len WILLIAM BRACK MANN, or NEWARK, NEW J 00., me, on NEW YORK, N. Y.,
ERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE OCEAN LEATHER A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
PROCESS OF SHRIN'KING SHARK-sk ns.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BRACKMAN N, a citizen of the United States, residing at 56 Fabyan Place, Newark, State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Processes of Shrinking Shark-Skins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to the shrinking of skins, more particularly shark skins, and it has for its object primarily to produce shrunken grain.
In carrying out my invention I employ a. solution consisting substantially of Gambier, 2 lbs, boiled and strained.
Muriatic acid, 1} lb.
Oxa-lic acid, 2 oz.
Aluminum-chlorid,
Water, 3 gallons.
I mix these ingredients thoroughly and then make the solution luke-warm, and apply to the skins, in any suitable manner, as by a brush, giving the skins a good coat.
I then put the coated skins on a table or tables, or other support, of glass, metal or wood greased, or some analogous slippery support, so that the skins will not stick thereto. The skins are then placed in a drying room and subjected to a temperature of not more than 110 Fahrenheit, for a suith of time. Practical tests have proven that skins thus of an oz.

treated produce the desired shrunken grain and that the quality of the skin is not impaired, but, on the other hand, is greatly improved.
While the proportions above specified are what I have found to produce most satisfactory results, the proportions may be varied within certain limits Without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
The skins are to be left'in tan for from four to five days, and then taken out, treated with my solution, and afterward further tanned. In contradistinction to pickling the skins in a pickling solution, in a revolving drum, or a pickling vat, I place the skins, when partially tanned, on a fiat surface and applymy solution to the grain side with a brush or sponge. This treatment causes the grain to draw or shrink,'thereby producing or a natural embossing. What is claimed as new is 1. The process of treating skins to produce shrunken grain, which consists in treating them with a luke-warin'solution con-tain- 111 teihperature not greater than 110 Fahrenheit.
2. Material for treating skins embodying gambier, muriatic acid, oxalic ac1d and aluminum-chlorid,
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
