To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN P. CoNs'rABLE,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident' of Llewellyn Park,l West Orange, Essex county, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Phonographs or Talking-Machines, of which the :following is a description.
f My invention relates .to phonographs or talkingmachines. In my improved device, the sound conveyer formin a' part of the phonograph or talking machine is preferably so mounted at the large or exit end that the whole conveyer and the reproducer connected thereto move about a; Substantially horizontal axis to permit disengagement of the reproducer from the record. During the reproduction of a record, the sound conveyer and the reproducer move laterally of the record, this lateral movement being preferably obtained by mechanical feeding means. The said means are rendered inoperative by ,the same adjustment of the sound conveyer which causes the reproducer to be moved out of engagement' with the record. One of the objects of my invention is to provide in a machine of the class described improved means. for mounting the sound conveyer and for disengaging the reproducer from the record and rendering the mechanical feeding means inoperative. Other objects of my invention will be more fully described in the followi specification and appended claims.

Referring to the drawing, the sound reproducer 1 carries a'stylus 2 adapted to track a record 3 carried by a turntable or record support 4. The conveyer extends from the. connection 14 rearwardly, as Shown at l5, thenl downwardlyl past the record support and motor, as shown at 16,l and terminates in a forwardly directed exit `portion 17. The neck of the reproducer and the soundcontaper so throughout the whole length of the reproducer neck andthe sound conveyer. From the mouth or exit end of the sound conveyer, the sound waves pass through the open grille 18 at the :front of the cabinet into' the atmosphere.
The Sound conveyer is preferably supported as follows; The upper e'nd of the sound lconveyer has secured thereto a bracket member 19 which is provided with spaced forwardly extending lugs 20 between which is pivoted, .as at21, a lug on the upper end of a vertical sleeve-like` member 22,- the lower end of which is provided with aspherically shaped portion 23 resting upon a ball 24 which is loosely mounted in a Socket member- 25 secured to the bottom ofthe cabinet. The spherical portion 23 of the member 22 is also arranged within 'the socket member 25 and is held thereby against lateral displacement. A straight vertical rod 26 is -Slidable 'rectilinearly upwardly and downwardly within the member 22, this rod being journaled within the bed plate 5. i The rod 26 and the member 22 are accordingly supported for rotation about avertical axis extending longitudinally thereof.- Secured Within the sound conveyer and projecting from the lower side of the mouth thereof is a bracket 27 which is provided at its outer yend with a slot 28 in which the lower end of the member 22 is arranged. The slot 28 is of substantially the samewidth as the member 22 and is of sufficient length to permit a considerable movement of the conveyer about the horizontal axis of pivot 21 without a disengagement of the bracket 27 from the member 22. The rod 26 has secured to the lower end thereof, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2, a member 29 which has 'a downwardly and outwardly inclined cam surface 30 adapted to coact with the inner end of the slot 28 to move the bracket 27 and the conveyer about the axis of pivot 21 upon upward movement of the rod 26 and cam member 29. The member 29 projects through a vertical slot 31 in the member 22. When the horn or conveyer is moved about the axis of pivot 21 by the cam 30, the reproducer and the stylus are moved away from the record. In Fig. l the solid lines indicate the operative position of the sound conveyer and the reproducer for the reproduction of a record, and the dotted lines indicate the-inoperative position of the same after the elevation of the rod 26 and the cam member 29, the reproducer being disengaged from the record. For elevating the rod 26 I preferably provide a lever 32 which is pivoted to the said rod, as at 33, and which is provided with a cam-shaped portion 34 resting upon a metallic bearing plate 35 on the top of the base plate 5. The
lever 32 is shown in solid and dotted lines v in Fig. l in positions corresponding respectively to the solid line and dotted line positlons of the sound conveyer and s ound reproducer. In order that the reproducer may be readily moved across the record by hand, I provide the bracket 27 with a recess 36 extending from s lot 28 within which recess the cam member 29 fits comparatively closely; so that when the lever 32 is rotated about the vertical axis of the rod 26, the member 29 rotates the conveyer and the reproducer carried thereby about the same axis.
The feeding means employed for causing the reproducer to move across the record preferably comprises a sector 37 secured to the bracket 19 and having a downwardly extending toothed portion or rack 38 curved on the arc of a circle coaxial with the rod 26. Therack 38 is arranged to engage with a worm gear 39 driven from the vertical spindle 8 by suitable gearing (not shown). As the rack is carried by the bracket 19, the movements of the conveyer about the horizontal axis of pivot 21 carry the rack with it, the rack being moved out of engagement with the worm gear 39 when the conveyer is shifted into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1.
In operation, the lever 32 is first tilted into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1 to lift the reproducer away from the record support and to disengage the feeding rack 37 from the worm gear 39. Afterfthis the lever 32 may be rotated about the vertical axis of the rod 26 to move the sound conveyer so as to carry the reproducer to one side of the record support, whereupon 'a record may be readily placed upon the record support. The lever 32 may now be 70 rotated about the vertical axis of the rod 26 to bring the stylus above the point on the record where the reproduction is to begin. After this, the lever 32 is moved into the solid line position shown in Fig. 1 to permit the sound conveyer and the reproduoer to move downwardly about the horizontal pivot 21, the reproducer being thereby moved into engagement with the record and the rack or sector 38 engaged with the worm gear 39. The machine is now in readiness for the reproduction of the record.
It is to be understood that my invention is not restricted to the exact details Vdisclosed.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is as follows l. In a phonograph or talking machine, the combination of a record support, a reproducer in operative relation thereto, a sound conveyer carrying said reproducer, and means movable rectilinearly at an angle to the horizontal for shifting said conveyer about a substantially horizontal axis to move said reproduce-r away from said record support, substantially as described;

In a phonograph or talking machine, the combination of a record support, a reproducer in operative relation thereto, a sound conveyer carryingsaid reproducer, and means movable vertically for shifting said conveyer about a substantially horizontal axis to move said reproducer away from said record support, said means comprising a vertical rod having va cam-shaped operating surface, substantially as described.

In a phonograph or talking machine, the combination of a record support, a reproducer in operative relation thereto, a sound conveyer carrying said reproducer, and means coacting with the mouth of said conveyer and comprising a member movable bodily at an angle to the horizontal for shiftstantially as described.

Ina phonograph or talking machine, the combination of a reco-rd support, a reproducer in operative relation thereto, a sound conveyer carrying said reproducer, and -means coacting with the mouth of said conveyer and movable vertically to shift said conveyer about a substantially horizontal axis to move said reproducer away from said record support, said means being also movable to shift said conveyerin a direction to move said reproducer across said record support, substantially as described.

In a phonograph or talking machine, the combination of a record support, sound reproducing means in operative relation thereto, and means forshifting said'sound reproducing means about a substantially horizontal axis to move the same away from said record support, said means comprising a hollow member and a rod moving upwardly and downwardly within said member and having a cam surface, substantially as described.
16. In a phonograph or talking machine, the combination of a record support, sound reproducing means in operative relation. thereto and means pivotally supporting said reproducing means to allow the same to move across' said record support, said supporting means comprising an independently movable part for moving saidy sound reproducing means about a substantially horizontal axis away from said record support, substantially as described.
17. In a phonograph or talking machine, the combination of a record' support7 sound reproducing means in operative relation thereto, said sound reproducing means being pivoted for moving across said record support, and means comprising a member movalble rectilinearly in a vertical direction for movin sai-d sound reproducing means about a su' stantially horizontal axis away from said. record support, substantially as described.
18. In a phonograph or talking machine, a member pivoted upon a substantially vertical axis and also movable about a substantially horizontal axis and means mounted upon and movable longitudinally of said vertical axis to move said member about said horizontal axis, substantially as described.
