JOHN AMES, JR, OF LANSINGBURG, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN AMES, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,402, dated August 13, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Tall-Brush, 860., invented by JOHN Arms, J r., of Lansin gburg, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved brush, part being broken away to show the construction, and
showing in dotted lines the form of the handle when completed. Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal section of the same taken through the line 00 m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of WalLbrushes, known also as flat paintbrushes, paste-brushes, &c., and which may also be applied to whitewashbrushes, so asto produce firmer, stronger, and more durable brushes than the brushes made in the ordinary manner; and it consists in the brushes constructed as hereinafter more fully described.
A is a ferrule made of iron or other suitable metal, and which is made tapering, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The ferrule A may be cast, struck up, or pressed into the desired form, or
brazed or welded, and then brought to the desired form by a former. B are the bristles, the
it to be driven into the brush.
After the handle O has been driven into its place one or more rivets or screws, D, are passed through the opposite. sides of the ferrule A, through the bristles B, and through the handle 0, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The handle 0 is then reduced to the desired form, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
By this construction the butts or roots of the bristles will be clamped in the tapering or dovetailed space between the tapering ferrule A and the tapering base of the handle 0, so as to be held firmly and securely in place, the rivets or screws D preventing the possibility of any of the parts working loose.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- A brush composed of the flattened tapering ferrule A, bristles B, tapering handle 0, and screws D, arranged, constructed, and applied together as described.
