ful Improvements in Switch-Stands, of
which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to railroad switch mechanism and -more particularly to the switch stand therefor.
The principal object of the invention is to improve the construction of switch stands by employing ,a minimum number of elementary parts whereby the stand is rendered dependable and the cost of manufacture 'is small. 3
To this end the stand or the 'present invention comprises a base plate having an integral pivot p0st,-a two armedlever mounted on the post having one arm connected to the switch operating rod and the other arm being operated directly by a. hand lever pivoted on the plate. The details of the construction and the features of novelty will be apparent from the description taken in con-' nection with the drawings in which,

Referring to the drawings it will be seen that'the preferred form of the inven ion comprises a base plate 10 secured at its ends by any suitable means such as spikes 11 to the ends of two adjacent ties 12, of the railroad. The outline of the base plate is preferably of the form shown in Fig. 1. The front edge thereof has an upright flange 13 which may be offset at 14 to provide a triangular pro ectin g portion although, obviously this front edge and flange may be straight if desired. of the same being substantially parallel to the ties '12. A hand lever has a pin ,18 at one thereof rotatively fitted in the bore 16 and is formed with an intermediate portion 19 inclined to the axis of the pin, the
end of this latter ortion being joined to a handle portion 1 arranged substantially perpendicular to the pin 18. In the position of the parts shown in Fi 1 it will be observed that the lever and ange are parallel, and the same is true when the lever is swung to the other side of its pivot. The intermediate portion 19 of the lever is formed with I a boss 21 and a bore 20, the axis of this bore forming an acute angle with the axis of the bore 16 in the flange. A sliding block comprising a square-head 22 and the cylindrical pin 23 joined thereto has the pin rotatively tted in the said bore 20.
As clearly shown in Fig. ,4, the base plate is formed with the integral upstanding pivot post 24, the axis thereof being atthe intersection of the axes of the bores 16 and 20. The plate at the base of the post is formed with a slightly raised annular seat 25 for the bottom of the hub 26 of a two armed lever mounted on the post for swinging movement in a' horizontal plane. One arm 27 is pivotally connected to the switch operating rod 28 which may be of any desired type and the other arm which is substantially at right angles to the arm 27. has the parallel spaced substantially vertical ears 29 forming-a vertical groove 30 which receives the square head 22 of the sliding block. As blearly shown in Fig. 4, the bottom 31 of this groove is curved in order to permit the swinging movement of the hand lever. Displacement of the hub 26 in an upward direction-may be prevented in any suitable manner; as shown, a washer 34 and cotter pin 35 are provided for this purpose.' v 5: 1 v
Referringto Fig. 1, it will be observed that the parts of thestand are constructed and arranged so that the switch is positively held in either of its positions. Thus if any force is transmitted to the two armed or bell crank lever through the operating rod 28, the lever will not be. moved for the reason that the hand lever with its connection to the slotted arm of the bell crank provides a lock which prevents any turning movement of the bell crank. In the operation of the device if itis desired to throw the switch, the hand lever is raised and turned through an angle of 180 from the position shown in.Fi 1 and 3. In this movement theslidin b ock will operate as a crank to turn the be l crank, the path ofthe axis of the block being semi-conical, the apex of the cone being at the axis of the pivot post. The bottom 31 of the groove in the bell crank prevents inward movement of the sliding block so that no added parts are required for the purpose of securing the pin 23 in the lever.
It will be observed that the construction above described is exceedingly simple, there being only five parts in the switch stand proper and all bein of the simplest form and design. Not on y is the design simple, but the labor required in manufacturing and assembling is very small, so that the entire device can be produced at a minimum cost.
In Figs. 5 and 6 a modification is. illustrated in which the pin and groove connection between the hand, lever and bell crank is reversed. Thus the pin or sliding block has a head 22 which is formed with a roove adapted to receive the arm 29? oft e bell crank, the other arm 27 being pivotally connected to the switch operating rod 28. The sliding block has the cylindrical portion 23' rotatively fitted in the bore 20 of the intermediate portion 19 of the hand lever. 'The hand lever and the remaining portions of the switchstand are of the same construction as described in connection with Figs. 1 to 4: inclusive. In the form of the device shown in Figs. 5 and 6it will be observed that the slidin block is held against displacement by t e arm 29' engaging in the groove 30 of the block, and no nuts or other means are required to secure the block to the lever. I
Although specific embodiments have been described in detail it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact form of the parts as shown, but that it covers changes and modifications coming within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A switch stand including in combination a base plate having a vertical pivot post, a bell crank lever swingingly mounted on said post, a hand lever pivoted on said plate to swing about ahorizontal axis, means operatively connecting one arm of the bell crank and the hand lever comprising a projection on one part fitting a groove in the other and the other arm of the bell crankbeing pivotally connected to the switch optal axis, and a projection-and groove connection between the hand lever and one" arm of the bell crank, the other arm of the bell crank being pivotally connected to the switch operating rod.
3. A switch stand comprising in combination, a base plate having an integral vert cal pivot post and an annular seat at the base of the post, a two armed lever mounted on said post the lower face of the lever hub resting on said seat, means on the post to hold the-hub against upward movement, a
hand lever pivoted on said plate, and. means directly connecting the hand lever to one arm of the first lever to swing'the latter, the other arm being pivotally connected to the switch operating. rod.
