UNITED STATES PATENT OFFCE.
BETTA H. VANCE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
MOSQUITO-FOIL FOR BEDS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BETTA H. VANCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in thecounty of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mosquito-Foils for Beds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
My invention relates to mosquito foilsfor beds in which a bag-like device, constructed of mesh fabric, is supported in an inverted position, above the bed, by a skeleton frame supported by the bed-bottom, the bed lying within the mouth of the bag, adapted. to form an inclosure about the sleeper to pro tect him from mosquitoes and like insects.
An object of the invention is to provide a framefor supporting the bag, constructed of as few parts as possible, one that is made in such a way that it may be readily connected-up and attached to a bed, and as readily disconnected and folded-up into a compact form so as to occupy a comparatively small space for carrying about; a second object is to provide for the reinforcing of the fabric at places most subject to wear; a third object is to provide means whereby a sleeper may readily enter or leave the inclosure or bag; a fourth object is to provide such an inclosure that is comparatively roomy and one that will interfere as little as possible. with the free movements of the sleeper; and a fifth object is to provide an inclosure of the character mentioned that will effectively exclude mosquitoes and like insects.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combi-- nation and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed; it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made-within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my invention attached to a bedbottom, also showing portions of the bedstead.

of the frame-work, also showing a portion of the bed-bottom.
Fig. 4 is a view in elevation'of another portion of the frame-work, also showing a portion of the bed-bottom.
Figs. 5 and 6 are detailed views in perspective of portions of the frame-work.
Figs. 7 and 8 are detailed sectional views of certain portions of the frame-work.
Fig. 9 is a vertical section of the bag on line aa, Fig. .1, certain portions being broken away, also showingv portions of the bed-bottom with portions of the latter in section.
Fig. 10 is a fragmentary vertical section of the head end of the bag, also showing fragments of the bed-bottom. Fig. 11 is a fragmentary vertical section of the foot end of the bag, also showing fragments of the bed-bottom.
Fig. 12 is a fragmentary vertical section ofthe bag, showing a section of reinforcing fabric sewed onto the inner side of one of its upper corners.
Note: In Figs. 9, 10, 11 and 12, where portions of the bag are shown cut away, the oblique shading occurring between the paralleling lines would appear to indicate cuts through solid instead of open-mesh materials, 1t is intended, however to be illustrative of cuts through the latter and of which materials the bag is constructed.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts throughout the several views. L
1 designates the foot end and 2 the head end of a common bedstead of the metal type, which supports a bed- bottom comprising cross-pieces 3 and 4, side pieces 5, and spring wires 6.
7 designates uprights which form a portion of the head end division of the frame-work. Each of said uprights consisting of a lower section 8 and an upper section 9. The lower section comprising a pair of flexible rods twisted together as at 10, arms 11 extending outwardly approximately at right angles with the axis of said section and having their free ends spaced apart and terminating in eyes 12 through which extend fastening devices 13 for securing said arms to the cross pieced, and upwardly extending mem bore 14 provided at their fre'eends with eyes 15, the axis of the eyes extending parallel with the axis of said section. 1 The upper 9 comprising a of more or'dess 7 together and bent into a depending hook 16,
"of said" supporting-rods an intermediate off-set portion 17, and downwardly extending members 18 slidably extending through the eyes 15 and provided at their free ends with eyes 19 through which slidably extend the members 14 of the lower section 8. The axis of the eyes 19 extending parallel with the axis of the eyes 15.
It is-intended'that'the' section 9 shall be slidable longitudinally upon the lower section 8, whereby the former may be adjusted vertically, and also" intended that said sections shall be slidable longitudinally relatively to each other in order that the uprights may becontracted longitudinally for packing more compactly when removed from thebed bO'ttOm.
20 is a ring-like ferrule encircling the rods 18 below the off-set 17 and slidable on said rodswhen-they are-comparatively close together,- and is adapted to be moved downwardly upon said rods to contract them laterally relatively to each other, when it is desired to arrest their downward movement through the eyes1 5: (See Fig. 7
(One of the uprights 7 being disposed at each end of thecross-pie'ee 4, in such a position so'that it will face diagonally across the 'bedat anangle of about 45 degrees from said cross-piece, while the third one of the said uprightsis secured to the cross-piece at a point thereon about equally distant from either end, and is so positioned that it will face across the bed along aline running parallel with its sides.
21 designates uprights comprising each a pair of vertically extending more-or-less flexible rods 22 joined together at. their upper endsandibent'into a depending hook 24, a twisted together section 23 and outwardly' extending arms 25' having their ing; them to the; cross piece 3.
The uprights 21 are adapted to be disposed upon the cross-piece 3 and positioned thereon relatively to the bed, at points and in positions similar to the points and positions occupied by the uprights 7 on the cross-piece 4. f
26 designates the outer. sections and 27 the inner sections, of supporting-rods connecting together'the' upper ends of the outer uprights and the middle upright of each division of the framework. Each section comprising a straight rod provided at one en'd with a hook 28' and at the other end with an eye 29 through whichslidably extends an intermediate portion of the cooperating or oppositesection. The hooks 28 of the outer sections 2:6 are adapted to be supported by the hooks 16 and. 24 of the outer uprights, and the hooks 28 of the sections 27 are adapted to be supported by the rings 30 supported by the hooks 16 and 24 of the middle uprights.
The sections 26 and 27 are adapted to slide longitudinally past one another through the eyes 29, whereby the connecting-rods may be adjusted longitudinally to meet the varying distances at which the uprights may be set apart from each in order to meet the requirements of beds of various widths, and also so as to make them contractably longitudinally thereby permitting them to be bundled up more compactly for transportation purposes.
31 are flexible supporting-cables, constructed preferably of ordinary cords or tape of sufiicient strength for the purpose for which they are adapted, however, .if so desired, wires or wire-cables can be substituted. Each of said cables have one end secured to one of said divisions of the frame adjacent the top ends of the outer or end uprights and the other end secured to the top end of the outer or end uprights of the other division.
32 designates the upper and closed end,
33the foot end, 34 the head end and 35 the sides of a four-sided covering bag open at its lower end and constructed of mosquito-bar or like mesh fabric of a mesh sufficiently small to prevent the passing therethrough of mosquitos and like insects. Into said bag from the lower and open end thereof'is adapted to project said frame for extending and supporting it. The corners in the upper end of the bag being adapted to hang upon the top ends of the outer uprights of each division. The intermediate sections of the upper end of'the bag being supported by the cables 31.
' Along the margin of the opening in said lower end of the bag is sewed as at 37 a border strip 38 constructed of smaller mesh andstronger and more wear-resisting fabric than the bag proper. The free edge of said border strip is confined between the bedbottom and the bed' adjacent the margins thereof thereby confining the bag adjacent its open end closeup against the bed, said bed lying substantially within the bag.
39 is an'opening extending through one of the sides 35 intermediate its ends, adapted as a passage-way for the occupant of the bed for entering or leaving the bag. Said opening 39 extending vertically from the upper end of the bag downwardly to the border strip 37, while horizontally it extends through the middle section of the side at a distance inwardly from either end thereof. v
' 40 designates a curtain preferably constructed of the same class of material as the bag and having its upper edge sewed thereto above the opening 39. Said curtain being adapted to over-hang said opening and to form means for closing same and is provided adjacent its lower edge with buttonholes 42 adapted to be engaged by buttons 43 spaced along the bag below the opening.
It is preferable to make said curtain Wide enough so that its side edges may over-lap comparatively Wide portions of the side 35 adjacent the sides of the opening 39, whereby said. curtain may form a more effective closure therefor when it is let down as far as it will go. and buttoned.
36 designates pieces of relatively smaller meshed and more wear-resisting fabric than constitutes the body of the bag, sewed onto the inner sides of the upper corners thereof and adapted to protect it against wear-andtear of the frame. If desired, said pieces 36 may be made of material other than fabric.
44 designates the bed.
